I missed Mass!

Due to me working yesterday I knew I would be going to the 5pm Sunday Mass. My wife went shopping in the car and I was waiting for her to return so we could go. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the church and she returned around 15-20 minutes before 5pm. She started shouting at me when she came in and then told me she hopes I get run over. I was stunned at this as she hadn’t said anything like that before. I was very sad and upset and my mind was jumbled thus I missed Mass.

I intended to go the whole time and very much wanted to go. It was like shellshock.

Did I commit a mortal sin? It doesn’t feel like it.

This is just my opinion, but I do not think you committed a mortal sin. As always, talk to your priest about it when you can or at your next confession.

Every mortal sin includes:
grave matter, knowledge, full consent.

In this case:

“grave matter” = missing Mass.

“knowledge” = Nelka knows Sunday Mass is an obligation.

But Nelka didn’t have “full consent,” because he really was going to go to Mass!

If you fully intended to go to Mass, you prepared to go to Mass, and then stuff started happening and you forgot about it, or you couldn’t get away, or you got stuck in a traffic jam – anything like that means that missing Mass was a misfortune for you, not a sin.

If you need your mind set at rest, talk to the priest at your next Confession. But “full consent” is set as a reasonably high bar. The Church is not in the business of setting traps for your behavior.

I don’t think you committed a mortal sin. You would need full knowledge and consent of the will. That said, I still hope to see a thread titled “I went to confession!” tomorrow. It is a good follow up thread to a thread titled “I missed Mass!” Don’t you think so too? And, I would personally not receive Holy Communion until confession. God loves you. Don’t worry. Make an act of perfect contrition if you can and get to confession.

Were you thinking about how you were missing Mass as this was happening? Or were you so focused on what your wife said that it slipped your mind so that when you remembered, it was too late (in this case it wouldn’t be a mortal sin)?

Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring this to Confession. And my goodness I hope your wife comes to her senses!!! Praying for you.

I missed morning mass today too. It is good you care. It is not a heart attack. I may try to go latter today. It is a little dark to be walking. I could call a cab. I guess.
