I need a apologetics book recommendation

Could any of you recommend the Best book for rebutting to protestants about Church teachings with scriptural references. Like a apologetics handbook or something. there are so many, which one is the best.:confused:
 
I don’t know if there is an exhaustive apologetics book. But, one that defends the Church on the matter of Sacred Tradition, with explicit arguments for Protestant readers, is Tradition and the Church, by Agius.

It’s around 315 pages. I think he made his point somewhere by page 160. The rest is really very good extended comments on Tradition.

perspective: My cousin and her husband are evangelicals, and he’s even a minister. I saw one of their electronic newsletters, with some standard handful of verses alleging to support sola scriptura.

I sent them a copy of the book and haven’t gotten a reply. but, the book is what I would call a boatload of scripture that supports Tradition. The case is really stronger than I was ever aware.

Tradition is really a central issue in apologetics, as far as I’m concerned. So much flows from it. I think it would be a general starting point for dealing with protestants.

I think he has presented an overwhelming case for Tradition.
 
The game “My out of context Bible verse is better than your out of context Bible verse” is an olympic sport here in the deep south. I rarely play it anymore and where I’m from, having a handbook of contrary bible verses is like having boxing gloves.

What I think is a better resource, is a book which explains where the arguments against the Catholic faith come from. That’s why I recommend that anyone interested in apologetics read “Catholicism vs. Fundamentalism” by Karl Keating.

Keating’s book is an “oldie but a goodie.”

The arguments of protestantism haven’t changed. They maintain an advantage by keeping the discussion on their terms. So, you will encounter a lot of circular reasoning, as Agius documents in his book.

Another “oldie but goodie” to keep on your shelf is Alan Schreck’s Catholic and Christian. In fact I have given several copies to Evangelical friends over the years. Very respectful, and yet very clear.

Here are my recommendations:

Karl Keating’s Catholicism and Fundamentalism is one that every budding Catholic Apologist should read.

Then there are the conversion stories which is a treasure trove of real life apologetics from converts. It’s a kind of “been there, done that, know better now.” To list some: Rome Sweet Home, Lead Kindly Light, Surprise by Truth.

On the topic of the Papacy, Patrick Madrid and Stephen Ray do excellent jobs.

The one that I think gave a thorough analysis of the difference in understanding regarding justification is Francis Beckwith in “Return to Rome”. He does a very thorough treatment of it which is not surprising considering he used to be the President of the Evangelical Theological Society.

Much of apologetics work require clarity of thinking so have recourse to Chesterton.

But first and foremost, - pray, pray, pray. Spend time before Him who whose Truth you want to expound.

There are many.

The Handbook of Catholic Apologetics by Tacelli and Kreeft is perhaps the most comprehensive modern book. Very sound apologetics book that all Catholics interested in the subject should have on the shelf.

Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Keating is right there with the above book, perhaps more relevant to your situation.

Crossing the Tiber by Steve Ray , former hardcore Baptist’s conversion story. Also packed full of apologetics.

An Invitation to Faith by Pope Benedict

Born Fundamentalists, Born Again Catholic by David Currie (See Steve Ray)

Scott Hahn’s books are all good but not quite as in depth as the ones listed above but probably a lot easier to read.

Greetings NickVa,

This is not an easy read to be sure, but it is Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Dr. Ludwig Ott. It breaks down the dogmas of the Church and shows where in Scripture the dogmas can be supported.

This is a personal favourite reference of mine as well.

Have you tried Biola University or Fuller?

I’ve thought about buying some myself but I’m hesitant because I feel like if I’m studying anything outside my Bible I could be missing something very important.

Jesus said he that drinketh of the water the I (meaning Jesus) shall give shall never thirst. Which means there’s only so much I can get out of those other books. But the good book… well, like Exekiel said, it’s a river that cannot be passed over.

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Therefore, let us attend at wisdoms gates. Wisdom is justified of her children.

AMEN!

I think it is precisely the question of the Bible that we need apologetics books. The OP needs some that will help show the error in the protestant understanding of some Bible verses.
