Can anyone recommend a book that discusses in detail how the early Church determined the Canon? I prefer to have a neutral, non-Catholic author, if possible. I would also like the book to take a more historical rather than theological perspective. Thanks.

Zach

Henry Graham’s “How we got the Bible” is pretty good and easy to read. I don’t know if you could call him un-biased though. The sub-title to the book is, “Our debt to the Catholic Church”! 🙂

This web-site from Agape may help.

No offense to anyone intended, but one of the books I’ve found that contains some detail on this is “The Bible for Dummies”. I was able to find it a our local library.

While not directly related to the development of the NT canon, the book How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization by Thomas E. Woods, Jr. is a good read.

Hi Zach, here is a few intelligent protestants on it,

The Canon of Scripture
By: F.F. Bruce

A High View of Scripture? The Authority of the Bible and the Formation of the New Testament Canon by Craig D. Allert

The Canon Debate Edited by Lee Martin McDonald & James A. Sanders

The Formation of the Christian Biblical Canon
Lee Martin McDonald

The Canon of the New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance by Bruce M. Metzger

The New Testament Canon: Its Making and Meaning by Harry Y. Gamble

The Making of the New Testament: Origin, Collection, Text & Canon by Arthur G. Patzia

The Council Of Jamnia And The Old Testament Canon, Robert C. Newman,

Scribes and Schools: The Canonization of the Hebrew Scriptures by Philip R. Davies

Torah and Canon (Paperback)
by James A. Sanders (Author)

I’ll toot my own horn.

If you are interested in the formation of the Old Testament canon, my book just went to press this week called:

Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger: The Untold Story Of The Lost Books Of The Protestant Bible (Grotto Press, 2007).

It is the first book written by a Catholic since 1897 on the subject on the Old Testament canon. Needless to say, there is a lot of new material on the subject. You can get it at www.Grottopress.org or www.HandsOnApologetics.com. We’ll be able to take orders in about a week.

I also recommend (on the same subject) -

The Formation Of The Christian Biblical Canon, by Lee McDonald. He is not Catholic, but it is a good book and he also deals with the NT formation.

Francis Gigot, General Introduction To The Study of Sacred Scripture (Catholic).

I also found Edward Ruess, History of the Canon of Holy Scriptures in the Christian Church (Luther).

How this helps.

“Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger” by Gary Michuta

is only days away from being available to all. Copies are expected to be ready for sale Mid-April or sooner.

handsonapologetics.com/ is Gary’s web site… order direct from him or you can go to

grottopress.org/ which is taking orders too.

Take the time to read the comments by Steve Ray, Tim Staples, John Martignoni etc… perhaps a dull subject to some,… but Gary makes the subject come alive.

You can also get the debate with James White on this topic from Gary’s site… CD or DVD ( I believe Gary still has some VHS copies too)

speaking of Mr/Dr White… he posts at his site some support for Webster, as White and Webster would like all to believe that Gary makes things up… BUNK

Gary can prove the Catholic position from historical documents that White can not accept, lest he lose the debate again.

In all sincerity… buy the book. Even if it is not your first choice of reading… it will be an excellant reference book, and will also help Gary to continue his very effective Catholic work.

I hold in my formerly pagan-out-of-the-Catholic-Church-for-25-years hands

a copy of the newly released

"Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger - The Untold Story Of The Lost Books Of The Protestant Bible"

Arguments about 73 or 66 usually are either ended in confusion in trying to present all the evidence, because no one (until now) has really accumulated all that evidence.

Certainly a work like this would not come from a protestant camp, lest they find themselves in error.

Gary Michuta, the author, presents over 300 pages which any serious student can check and double check. There are many footnotes, many references, many proofs that once again the Catholic position is the correct one… and it is a fairly easy read.

handsonapologetics.com/ is the website of the author, and you can link on to Grotto Press to order… a $20 reference book every “66” proponent should now consider.

Thanks Gary… but where were you 500 years ago when Luther was playing his game?😃

seriously, if one can afford to pick this up… it is not only a great and long overdue reference on the deutrocanonicals, but you would be supporting a darn good ministry too.
