Not so. BXVI issued a letter on sacred music indicating he wants to get back to more traditional instruments and music. But no binding document banning other instruments has been issued. There are many many churches that don’t own an organ and can’t afford one. Ultimately it has been left in the hands of bishops and pastors to try to keep music within the spirit of the Mass, and it is recognized that what is appropriate can vary drastically from culture to culture as well. It may or not remain so, but for now, it is at the bishop’s/pastor’s discretion.

No to what? That Pope Benedict backs more traditional music or that it’s up to the Bishop’s/pastor’s discretion?
That was Pope Pius X – 100 or more years ago. Liturgical regulations can change.
The spirit of the Holy Mass and Pope St. Pius X’s Motu Proprio do not though.

Let’s get serious here.

The pope has issues - and properly so - with irreverent music. You wouldn’t want to be using gangsta rap or Black Sabbath for church hymns.

Electric guitars amps can be overbearing and tooth-jarring. Not exactly a reverent church experience, although there is some limited use for them (at modest volume settings) in youth masses where we’re trying to appeal to the teens through media they find attractive.

Acoustic guitars are something else entirely. They’re beautiful and reverent. Did you know that the hymn Silent Night was originally written for and sung with an acoustic guitar when a small church’s organ failed on Christmas eve?

I say accept the invitation.
