lately i’ve been atending a church at my place. and its not catholic. i think its born again (Victory Church). the thing is, i just cant say no to my uncle when he ask me to come with him at their church. and since ive been attending for 4 times i think. i notice that every time the pastor hit the catholic church (say bad things about us). then yesterday they (we) celebrated the ucharist ( i think) because we ate bread and drink wine.

now i know that priest can transform it to the body and blood of jesus. and i know that what im about to eat and drink at that time is not the body and blood of jesus. so for about 3min that the pastor was talking while we were holding the bread and wine, i simply say Jesus’ name.

what kin of sin did i commit?

Tell your Uncle that while you love him very much that you will be going to a Catholic Church from now on. (Ask him if he wants to come along.)

If you did not go to a Catholic Church on Sunday, you committed a mortal sin, since you are required to go to Mass each Sunday. (See 2192 in Catechism)

Get to confession, and then receive the Holy Eucharist as soon as possible.
Jesus is waiting for you.

Get yourself a copy of the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” first printed in the US in March of 2005. It will keep you straight regarding Catholic beliefs in matters of faith and morals. And you will also be in a position to accurately discuss Religion with your Uncle if you wish.

God Bless.

Out of curiosity, what are the kinds of things they are saying? Doesn’t your uncle know you’re catholic?

You have to remember one main reason for the Protestant faith is to attack the Catholic Church. This is the only thing that can justify their religion because they have to prove the CC is wrong (and Jesus was not right about His Church being guided by the Holy Spirit) You have to remember these Churches did not exist before the 1500s and most denominations will not exist 100 years from now (they will split off to become several other churches with slightly different teachings). Your uncle is trying to pull you alway from the true faith of the CC because he thinks his church is right and he loves you. You must try to help him for the same reason but you must be able to answer some questions about the Catholic church to counter all the negatives he heard about it from this preacher.
You need to learn more about your faith so you can straighten out and possible lead him to the true faith of Jesus.

As stated above you need to go to confession if you did not go to Sunday mass and I would advise talking to the priest about this and find how you can strengthen your faith more. If you parish has a good RCIA I would advice going to this when it starts back up and this should help you allot to understand your faith more. RCIA is not only for people converting and I believe more Catholic should go to this so as to share and also learn from these classes.

What they had was not the Eucharist but that being said you should also not participate in this part as it is away of showing unity within the church and it does not fit the CC belief as they think the bread and wine are only symbols/ Of course to them this is true since they do not have a true priesthood as Jesus and the Apostles set up. You might want to read the early church fathers and even get some of these book for your uncle. It is stated by the early church father do not share communion without the bishop or one of his priest present.

Let’s be careful about determining that this is a mortal sin. If the OP is a young person who is unable to get to Mass on his/her own, it is not a mortal sin to have missed Sunday Mass.

Watching - what is your relationship with your uncle? Could you have a respectful conversation with him about your faith? For that matter, how does it happen that you are Catholic and your uncle goes to this anti-catholic Protestant church? Is he a lapsed catholic, or did someone in your family convert to the Church? Is he insisting you attend his church because he is hoping to “save” you from the Catholic church? Or does he genuinely not know the difference?

I hope you can tell your uncle that as a Catholic it makes you very uncomfortable to attend a church where the pastor attacks your faith, and so you would rather worship in a Catholic church. If he is insistent and you are not able to say “no” (as you indicate in your post) then go quietly and spend the time praying that the Lord will reveal His truth to these misguided people. You can sing hymns and read the Bible with them without compromising your faith.

If it happens again that you are there when they have communion it would be best to pass on the symbolic communion that your uncle’s church offers - you can just pass the plate and cups to the next person and sit quietly.

And if you are able to get to Mass on your own, do go - even if it means going to church twice on the weekend.

As NHInsider pointed out, there might be extenuating circumstances that prevented the OP from going to Catholic Mass. It also is apparent to me that the OP was not properly instructed in the requirements of the faith and therefore the sin wouldn’t be mortal because it was not done in willful defiance of God or of the authority of the Church.

That being said, I agree that confession is probably a good idea.

I agree with the others. Though it is a grave matter to miss Mass without a good reason, we cannot presume the sin was mortal. Mortal sin must be a grave matter and done with full knowledge and consent. If this person is a young person who cannot get to Mass on their own, then they have a good reason. Thus it is not a mortal sin.

Be that as it may, if you are Catholic, you are not to receive communion at a non-Catholic church. They do not have the Eucharist, as you already pointed out, because they do not have a priest who can consecrate the Eucharist. They have only the symbol of the Eucharist. When a Catholic receives the Eucharist at the Catholic Church, they are professing that they believe in what the Church teaches about the Eucharist— that it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, when you receive somewhere else, you are sending the wrong message and giving a wrong profession. If you did not know all of this, the sin is venial. However, NOW you know, so to receive communion again at this other church becomes a serious matter. You can no longer stand before the Lord and say you didn’t know better, because you have been instructed.
Check out the Catholic Catechism (1400) for more information about communion.
However, it is not a sin to go to a service at another church as long as you attend the Mass too (if you are able)— personally I would never attend a church that bashes my faith and I would tell anyone, including family, that it is insulting to me to attend such a church. We are told in scripture to stand firm in our faith; just be sure to do so in a loving manner. (In other words, you should not be rude to your uncle, but firmly explain that you are Catholic and you do not want to attend a church that bashes Catholics.)

I Cor 11

In fairness, you should ask your uncle to visit your catholic church four times.

😃

But don’t try to have him go to communion since that will be a sacrilege and he will be worse off than he already is.
