There was a thread on CAF in 2004. I looked through it. Basically, some people on CAF liked it, some people didn’t. Is it for Catholics? Maybe, maybe not.

Your teacher “let” you watch it? What’s that mean?

Sorry abouyt that Im not good at english but this school I am attending right now is the N.O and I am very concerned about this JOA. That JOA is actually in the religion subject of my school. There was mostly things I would very protestant and I am very concern If I should not watch this.

I am also a Traditional Catholic. I attend the tridentine mass not n.o mass.I

Nothing wrong at all with JOA. It is about a teenager who is questioning her life and faith and talking with God.

Never heard of it, so, I IMDB’d it:

A teenage girl is visited by God, disguised as everyday people, and is given assignments and tasks that eventually have a positive outcome on people’s lives.

One would have to watch the episodes to see if they are contrary to Church Teaching. My guess from reading reviews is this is a modern version of “Touched By An Angel”, more Hallmark Movie feel goody than actual theology.

I never watched it, but I remember it being on the air. I don’t think there was anything particularly controversial about it.

It’s not quite Touched by an Angel. Joan is a teenager to whom God appears in various guises. He asks her to engage in tasks that often seem incomprehensible to her —although later she understands why he asked her to do them.

Touched by an Angel was the same premise, divine “missions” that made people all happy in the end.

I think the theology in Joan is a little more complex, and actually, a little better. I never really liked Touched by an Angel, but I thought Joan was pretty good.

It’s cheesy, schmaltzy, Hollywood “theology lite”.

But can be an entry point to faith for those who have had little exposure to theology “heavy.”

Not exactly. There’s no time travel. And no quasi-scientific explanation for what occurs. It’s clearly God, revealing himself to Joan in a variety of guises.
