Dearest Maegan,

Here is information about a program called Camp Joshua, a pro-life workshop for teens. Maybe it is something you can attend one day. Programs like this often have camperships available to make sure everyone interested can attend.

Besides the points that others have brought up, one point is that science has recently discovered that a pregnant mother never really gets rid of the baby since the cells of her baby live on in her brain for the rest of her life. Here’s a link to the science of this discovery:

And here’s a link to the National Catholic Bioethics Center which deals with questions like the one in the OP:

Perhaps someone will come along with a citation, but I believe that 1) such a case is quite rare. Ectopic pregnancy would be one. And 2) when you have a choice of saving neither or one, you save the one you can, which in this case is the mother.

Try this site regarding double effect: hli.org/cloning/400?task=view
The article says:
It is absolutely true that the Catholic Church bans direct abortion to save the life of the mother. However (and this is an extremely important point) the mother’s life may be saved by a surgical procedure that does not directly attack the preborn baby’s life.

I don’t really understand the logic behind the “doube effect”. Is the reason because the mother’s potential to life exists whereas the child’s potential to life does not exist?

Analogy:
Bob and I are traveling through the desert by car. I am driving because Bob is in a coma and cannot drive. About halfway to the next town I notice that there is not enough gas to make it. There is an extremely high chance that we will both die if we run out of gas. Then I come up with an idea… if I can lighten the load then there’ll be enough gas to make it. So I look around the car to see what can be thrown out. But the only heavy removable objects in the car are me and Bob. So I unstrap him and abandon him on the side of the road and drive off, fully aware that he will die (but I acknowlede that his death is unfortunate).

According to the “double effect” criteria (on hli.org/cloning/400-facts-of-life-chapter-9-catholic-church-teachings-on-abortion-abortion-to-save-the-life-of-the-mother-the-double-effect):
  1. The “object” was to lighten the load so that there’d be enough gas to make it to the next town so I would live. I would consider this a “morally neutral” object.
  2. The “good effect” (that I lived) was a direct result of my actions (to lighten the load), not a direct result of the “evil effect” (that Bob ended up dead).
  3. I did not desire for Bob to die.
  4. The good is to save my life which is “equal to” Bob’s death.
  5. No alternative (no other heavy removable objects were in the car)
    So it is “morally allowable”.
I notice that I had the “potential” to live (since I am able to continue driving) but Bob did not have that potential (he was in a coma and never would have made it to the next town regardless). So I guess that my potential to live v.s. Bob’s lack of potential causes my right to life to trump his in this situation, making the choice “morally allowable”? Is this correct or is there some other reason? Because it still sounds like a selfish decision for me to make.
