Hello.

Well, the word baptism itself means IMMERSION in greek. Why do Catholics do it by sprinkling and not immersion ? Also, i would like someone explain to me why are babies baptized ?

Immersion is not always possible in all circumstances, so other methods are completely valid and always have been. The meaning of Christian baptism is not dependent on the literal translation of the Greek word.

Christ commanded the Apostles (see Matt 28) to baptize. Christ didn’t say everyone except infants.

Immersion can be referred to by the word baptizo but the word baptizo is much broader in its meanings than just immersion. That baptizo equals immersion is intellectually and biblically indefensible and it has been for a long time, and it continues to be no matter how many times people repeat the mistake.

If you want to read the treatment of the word baptizo I would refer you to the four volumes of James W. Dale, they all have baptizo in the title and are available online if you hunt long enough or at reasonable prices as books.

He spent 20 years studying every single occurance of the word “baptizo” in the mid 1800’s. His work destroys the idea that baptism equals immersion.

In any case you can turn to the bible and see that as well.

As for sprinkling, that would be a good form of baptism just as we can see the term used in the Septuagint, but the Catholics don’t sprinkle. That’s use in a derogatory way by ignorant people who don’t know and probably don’t care about what they are taking about. Cathlics generally use affusion, pouring.

That the meaning of baptism includes pouring is very clear from Luke 11:38 where the Pharisee is amazed because Jesus did not undergo baptism when he came from the market. That is Jeus did not wash. Now we know exactly how it was to be done. Muslims and Jews do it to this day Just as it is recorded. They pour water over their hands and down their arms and knuckle the hands together. Exactly how it was done and how much water had to be used was prescribed in the Jewish oral history.

As for why infants? Do you withhold taking your infants to church until after they proclaim faith? Why not? Can they understand? Do you see any cases in the Bible of infants being taken to church?

There actually is infant baptism in the Bible. The very first recorded baptism included infants, the baptism unto Moses. It included the infants that their parents thought would perish in the wilderness. Interestingly the water was poured upon them in the form of rain by God as is recorded in the Psalms.

You also have the fact that infants are in need of God, and they are included in the Great Commission. They were also a part of the lesser old covenant, and are certainly included in the superior new convenant. In addition scripture links the practice of circumcision done on the 8th day with baptism.

And please don’t argue that infants cannot believe since Jesus himself says they can and includes them in his kingdom. Unless you want to include unbelievers in the kingdom and teach multiple paths to salvation, you really cannot argue infants cannot have faith.

Supporting the Bible is the fact that infant baptism has been the practice since the earliest recorded days of the church.

So the question is, why don’t you baptise infants? Why don’t you study the scripture and understand that baptism does not equal immersion?

Didache was apparently written between 70 to 100AD

Chapter 7. Concerning Baptism. And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, in living water. But if you have no living water, baptize into other water; and if you cannot do so in cold water, do so in warm. But if you have neither, pour out water three times upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. …

i also like words of the OT verse

Ezek 36:24 KJV
24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. 25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

The word does not only mean immersion or “to plunge”, it can also have the meaning to wash or sprinkle with water. Infants are Baptized so that they can become adopted children of God, members of the people of God. Because they are separated from God by Original sin and subject to satan, until they are Baptized.

Code:
I'm sure you have heard many times that salvition is not merited or earned it is a free gift from God. Frequently you hear protestants say "there is nothing you can do to earn salvation other than believe in Jesus Christ" The problem is that in protestant soteriology you end up doing something, You have to exercise your will to accept this free gift. Catholics on the other hand believe that salvation is a free gift that is "dropped into our laps", part of the reason why we baptize infants is becasue this is ultimate expression of this "movement of God towards men" A baby can not engage its will. It is completely dependent on others. Every day of their lives they are saved by those who feed them, protect them from dangers and care for them. Baptizing them is just a way we have to express what Pauls says in Ephesians that we are saved "by grace through faith" (In this case by the faith of the parents that request baptism for their child).
There are other reasons but I think this is one most protestants understand.

So Catholics think that baptizing a 1 month kid saves the child ?

The meaning of all the baptism thing is that, we died with Christ and rose again. The old person of my is dead, and a new one rose. When we are infants and we get baptized the kid has no idea what hes doing or what his parents are doing to him. He does not understand anything. And if baptism saves, then i think everyone in this world would get baptized. The Lord said, believe in the Lord Jesus-Christ and you will be saved. Its not the exact words from the Bible, but its just what I remember. Basically baptism according to the Bible does not save.

John 1:12-13

Titus 3:8
1 John 5:1
1 John 5:11-13

Take the verse you want, and it will prove to you that baptism does not save.

Mark 16:16
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned”

Allow me to explain. This verse clearly says, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be save”. But dont understand it wrong. It says he that BELEIVES and THEN BAPTIZED that be saved. Not baptized alone. And the unbeliever shall be damned (judged, or any other similar word.

Also, baptism is a work (something that man does to please God). According to the Bible you are not saved by works.

2 Timothy 1:9—“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, NOT ACCORDING TO OUR WORKS.”

Ephesians 2:8-9—“For by grace are ye saved THROUGH FAITH and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast.”

Titus 3:5—“Not by WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS which WE HAVE DONE, but according to His mercy He saved us.”

These 3 versus prove that we are not saved by works, and baptism = works.

If salvation could be earned by anything we do, then Christ’s death was a waste (Galatians 2:21). Read the passage your self, its clear.

And again, good works are not what a man DOES in order to be SAVED; good works are what a SAVED MAN DOES (Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:5-8)

If salvation is based (at least in part) on what we do, then our salvation can never be secure because we may do something to lose our salvation. If we are responsible to keep ourselves saved, then we may fall short, lose our salvation and be lost forever.

Please, read some of the versus I gave you, maybe you would understand me better :).

Trust me on this, every Catholic Apologist on these pages has read the bible multiple times and is very familiar with these verses. The problem you have is that you are reading individual verses out of context.

Fro instance, you quote the extraneous quote form Acts 2: 21: and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord
If you had read on a bit in the same Chapter, you would have come upon this:

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, “What are we to do, my brothers?”
38 Peter (said) to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call.”

Which says you need to do more than just calling on the name of the lord, you must repent and be baptized. and notice that this promise is also made to the Children.

Lol, uve made my point even clearer. The verse says, repent and be baptized, not be baptized and you will be saved.

repenting ( believe on the Lord ) + baptism = saved
repenting + nothing = saved

No one can repent and not knowing he is alive, its logic. A 1 month old baby isnt conscience of his life. How could he repent ? If he cant repent, then he cant be baptized. Bcse baptism comes after salvation which is in the verse you JUST showed me.

Is it just me, or do many people refuse to take the whole bible into account when determining their beliefs? It seems to be like this for most issues of doctrine.

Also, I would suggest people educating themselves on what the CC teaches and why before explaining why it is in “error.”

So Catholics think that baptizing a 1 month kid saves the child ?
Yep. Even Paul understood this, Why do you think Paul makes the analogy of baptism and circumcision in the letter to the Colosians? To understand this you have to understand the way Catholics view the world. Catholics have have a “sacramental” view of creation. Protestants lack this. This view was shared by all Christians until Martin Luther broke with the Church and came out with his “dung piles covered with snow” metaphor.
For protestants God’s grace is something they receive only when the person allows it in their hearts and have nothing to do with Gods goodness manifested within his creation. Catholics believe that God’s grace can be communicated through created matter, through actions and the movements of God’s spirit. The pouring of water does in fact cleanses our sins, it has nothing to do with us, we can not do anything about it. It is all the action of God. For protestants unless you do something (i.e. accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour) you have no hope of salvation. It does not matter how you slice it for protestants You HAVE TO do something, you have to accept Gods grace, you HAVE TO have faith believe.
Catholics view baptism much like the story of Lazarus. When Lazarus dies he was resurrected by The Lord not because Lazarus wanted to be alive again but because Martha and Mary ASKED Jesus to bring him back to life, Lazarus had not saying in the matter. A parent asks the Church to bring back a baby to spiritual life by the action of baptism. This is the only way a dead person can return to life, by the action of another one.

Also keep in mind that for Catholics salvation is a live long process. Baptism is just the first step. Like a child, birth is just the first step of becoming fully alive (i.e becoming where created to be)

You gave a long list of passages if you look at them withing the Catholic understanding of Grace (i.e. sacramentality point of view) they make perfect sense to a Catholic. (and for 1500 this was the view of every Christian until the Reformation)

Another thing, you said that the bible says baptism does not save. You might want to take a look at 1Peter 3:18-21. It can not be any clearer than this (Unless you want to claim that the bible contradicts itself and this is part of a different thread :))

Lastly, I do not engage in public discussions. If you would like to discuss more specifics send me a personal message and I will provide you with an e-mail you can contact me and we can expand on these topics.

1 Peter 3:18-21

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom[a] also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge** of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ

You misunderstood this verse. If Peter meant that baptism saves, then he would be contradicting MANY other passages, i stated before. Let me help you understand it. He did not mean at all that literal baptism saves. He says “symbolizes”. Basically he meant the spiritual baptism, when you accept Jesus as ur saviour and ask for forgivness.

Same thing here: “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Gal. 3:26-27).

Acts 10 shows that Cornelius was saved before getting baptized.

All this is from the Bible, I did not invent anything from my own head. Why are you denying ?**

A one month, day or minute old baby is separated from God from the moment of conception because of Adams Original sin. That child does not become an adopted child of God until he or she is Baptized, they then become a member of God’s people. Just like eight day old infants became members of God’s Old Testament people.

You interpreted the bible from your own head. Cornelius wasn’t saved before he was baptized. He merely recieved the Holy Spirit enabling him to speak in tongues but that didn’t guarantee that he would go to heaven.

And you have assumed that Peter really didn’t mean that Baptism saves, because you are preconditioned to thing that it does not. Your opinion does not effect the truth, however.

Why do you think Baptism plays such a prominent role in the new testament if it has no effect on salvation?

TazDinGo in Christ,

Please read the passage over again. The word symbolizes is a reference to the waters associated with Noah and the Ark as symbolic of baptism. It does not mean that baptism is symbolic. Baptism as Peter says, “now saves you.”

You may not have invented the scripture passages you quoted, but you invented an interpretation for what you believe they mean. Either that, or some other man invented the interpretation and then taught it to you.

And yes, Peter meant his words exactly as described. This does not contradict the rest of the scriptures you quoted. It merely demonstrates a contradiction to your personal interpretation which goes against the “sure word as taught”[1 Titus:9].

Christians have understood baptism in the way Catholics teach it since the day of Pentecost. It was not until the Reformation that any real objections arose. Go figure!

God bless.

Why should I accept your personal interpreation of these verses?

I will get back to you about Peter’s case.

For the person above, well no one is obliging you to accept what i say, ur always free to ignore my thread.

For instance, can you explain this to me.

If Christ died on the cross to wash away our sins, in other words to save us. Why would baptism save too ? I mean, did you reject his death and put baptism instead ? Or, both ?

Why does God require anything of us? He surely doesn’t need anything from us. Why does God require baptism at all? Why does God insist that we continue to repent and ask forgiveness? Why did God give the apostles the ability to forgive sins? Why does the Bible tell us that we have already been saved, but are in the process of being saved and yet won’t be saved until the future?

Trying to simplify the Word of God into simple human understanding misses the point. There is a very big picture at work and without the proper consideration of all things inspired, you will have difficulties. You are trying to pit scripture against itself and make it appear to send conflicting messages. Scripture does not cantradict itself.

Christ saves those who are baptized.

The Salvic Graces of the Cross are brought forth through the physical act of Baptism.

Why did Christ use His saliva and dirt on the eyes of the Blind man when conferring His healing powers on him? Because it’s His will and way of doing things.
