Alright, I think some of you responded to the thread where I had a disagreement with my mother about how I dress. She wanted me to be more girly, but everything she suggested or said i’d look good in, I felt uncomfortable wearing. It’s my senior year (high school) and I want to look and be more feminine, but I want to keep the clothes on.

Any help feminine people?

Skirts and dresses perhaps?

What kind of clothes are you uncomfortable with?

I applaud you for maintaining modesty in a world set against it!

As a teenager it was difficult shopping in the junior department because everything is so short and revealing. I was lucky to have my mother and friends’ support in modesty, but I know it is a huge battle to still be feminine yet modest. I went through a phase of wearing very baggy t-shirts and pants in middle school because I was afraid of clothing that was too tight. You should wear clothing that makes you feel modest. If your mother or anyone else has a problem with it just tell them you’re following Christ and if they are seeking God’s will themselves they will hopefully understand your convictions. Easier said than done I know. 😉

I wear a lot of camisole underneath shirts that are too revealing. You can get them in all kinds of colors these days and they are very light weight. With skirts the best place to find them is the Misses area because they tend to be a bit longer yet still stylish. I know as a teenager I used to think “This section is for…gasp…old people!” lol 😛 Now I realize that you can be stylish at any age (not to mention now I’m actually old)! lol But seriously give some thought to finding clothes in the Misses section or Petite department because they have a lot of cute things depending on the store! Maybe there you can find areas of agreement with your mother so both of you are happy?

More than any of the advice myself or others can give you keep strong in the modesty Christ has called you to. Being feminine is more than just clothing just like being modest is more than just clothing…it’s a state of your heart and mind seeking after purity in Christ. 😃

I have no idea what your personal style is, but maybe you could add scarves, shawls, sweaters, or shrugs to your wardrobe. They can help fill in some of the bare spots.

Here are pics of shorts my 12 yr old dd wears…she wears very modest tops to go with them…and hoodies.

she owns some of these styles in pink and purple…they really are adorable…and look put together with the right tops.

Have you also tried shopping at CCS? Much of their catalog is geared to skaters, but there are some very cute feminine, yet not frilly things for girls to wear. www.ccs.com

Some of the stuff is a little out there, but all modest, I’d say.

Hope that helps?🙂

the key to a feminine look is creating an hour-glass shape with your clothing. You can do this easily while staying covered.

You want to emphasize the smallest part of your waist. So pick shirts with an empire waist. Get jackets with a button right beneath the breast bone. Don’t let your shirts go below the crotch.

Pants should fit the largest part of your leg, then flare out. Or, if you are skinny, a skinny jean helps to make a figure.

Shirts or sweaters with a deep V cut, layered over a pretty tank or cami are always nice.

Skirts can be at or just below the knee. Be careful of chopping off your legs with a T length skirt.

4 principles of style - PATTERN, COLOR, TEXTURE, SHINE. Those should be part of any outfit.

The sale rack at Anthropologie is a good place to shop. Dillards has good stuff too.

Have FUN!!!

I forget not everyone is in Florida. lol

I second mizzinicole’s post…I actually learned a few things myself.😉 👍

It’s totally possible to shop at popular stores, look feminine, and maintain modesty - but you might have to pick through a certain amount of clothing that isn’t your taste.

I have great luck at Target when I’m looking for wardrobe basics. I love their long and short-sleeve tops. The V-necks are very flattering and feminine, but they don’t expose more than an inch below my collarbone 👍
Old Navy is great for jeans, because they have a rise and a fit for every taste. I was there recently, and they had some great button-front blouses for fall. They are cut for a female shape and come in some really cute prints and colors.
For something a little more unique, I love H&M, especially for skirts. A few years ago, I found a great, below-the-knee skirt with a bold floral pattern. A-line skirts are flattering on almost any body type because they float away from the body instead of clinging to every curve. They tend to have great jackets/blazers and more unique accent pieces.

You’re really in luck right now - layering is very popular, and skirts are getting longer. A sweet lace cami under a v-neck top or polo is a great feminine touch, and a flowy yet tailored skirt with great shoes (gotta love ballet flats! 😃 ) would be very pretty. Also, have you considered adding earrings, a necklace, or updating your haircut/color? Sometimes it just takes a little extra touch to make an ordinary outfit something special.

Go to a GOOD dept store–like Nordstrom–and ASK for help. The salespeople there are great at putting outfits together for your shape and comfort level. Devote some time and be prepared to try on lots of things before you find what you like. If you have a friend/sister/aunt whose advice, judgment you trust, bring her along and don’t forget to HAVE FUN.

I’m with Loren…start with something simple and move on as your comfort level increases.I wouldn’t jump head first into a complete drastic style makeover, besides it’s pricey.

Thrift stores are great places to find inexpensive items and if you’re unhappy with the piece then donate it right back.

I caught what you said about looking more feminine without taking it off…Most retail stores only provide the “brittany” look…but my family members have bought lots of trendy clothes online by checking out these websites. Perhaps something will catch your eye and you will knock out theirs!👍

Has anyone mentioned jewelry yet, getting some jewelry that you LOVE always make you feel special…oh how I love trips to my fave jewelers with my dad and his wallet lol

And nice shoes…ahhh shoes, and a nice bag…ahhhh bags :extrahappy:

Clothes…er swap hoodies for cardies, or if it’s cold wear the hoody on top and then you can take it off in class etc.

Don’t wear really baggy jeans, wear them to fit not drag along the floor.

Step away from the trainers and step into shoe world, where you won’t be needing laces, if you don’t want proper shoes go for pumps and types like rocketdog (if you have that make over there)

You don’t have to be revealing at all, cardies can silhouette your figure whilst covering up (with a big chunky necklace). You don’t have to wear skirts if you hate them, just more structured jeans/trousers so their not too boyish and have a style instead.

Go with accessorize, they add style to any outfit.
E.g Jeans, blue t-shirt with black cardie and add chunky necklace, some bracelets, a neat and pretty bag, and some nice shoes, maybe a scarf… and whalla you have a pretty, girly outfit, covering up and comfy.

Gosh I can blabba whilst talking about shopping 😛

Ohhh this is right up my alley, because I am super girly + preppy! And…I love to shop!

I live in skirts + dresses. I don’t do pants…in fact, I don’t own a single pair of jeans! You may try Lilly Pulitzer, Target, Vineyard Vines, J.Crew, GAP, Old Navy…depending on your budget.

Being girly is something you have to want though or else you will always look uncomfortable. What is most important is that you are comfortable with who you are. If you aren’t comfortable in a pink summer dress then why should you wear one?

I pray that you figure out what is best for you…not for your parents.

Go to a GOOD dept store–like Nordstrom–.
 If you happen to have SEVERAL hundred extra dollars laying around. I have never known anyone, in 33 years of life, that could afford to shop at Nordstrom. I guess, as Chris Rock would say, I’m not just poor, I’m PO’ ! 😃

Anyway, lots of styles right now will help you out. Long, flowing shirts in lots of feminine colors and patterns. Jeans waistlines seem to be coming back up to cover the crack, though Old Navy, Lee, and some others always had waistline choices. Longer, walking short-length madras shorts are in right now. Winter is coming, and there are always pretty, soft, feminine sweaters in lots of colors.

hahahaha… my kids get that catalog and shop there too… I thought I was the only one…

I second the  $500 later, she could have THREE outfits! 😃
Although, if she has someone to help her, she could do really well on the sale racks at Dillards, but that takes time and patience! 🙂

I also second the idea that feminine and modest can be accomplished by thinking of things that (modestly) outline an hourglass figure. I love the long slightly fitted shirt styles, the ones that come down to about your hip bones. Those are modest (provided you cover a decent amount of your breast, with layering or whatever), and easy to wear and almost ALWAYS flattering.

I hope you like to shop, OP, 😃 b/c finding the right things is usually more a matter of time spent looking than anything else. And don’t settle for ANYthing unless you really really like it. And don’t be afraid to RETURN items that you change your mind about at home. I’ve successfully returned jeans to JCPenney after pulling the tags off and WASHING them only to find that they were really too short (I had saved both the tags and the receipt).
