I need help picking a confirmation name

God has given each of us special gifts and He has work for us to do on earth.

I would recommend you pick a personal patron saint that best matches YOU and what you think is what you should be doing to do God’s Will for you.

Your patron saint will be your ally. That one in Heaven who will constantly pray to God for the graces you will need to do God’s Will on earth as it is in heaven.

If you are not sure about that approach, pick a saint with the qualities you most admire. 55 years ago I picked St Christopher because he was a big strong man and willing to carry a boy (the Christ child, but Chris did not know that) across a difficult stream. It took some effort and Christopher struggled but succeeded, of course with the graces from Christ. That appealed to my sense of manly duty and knowing I need God’s good graces to struggle and succeed.

Since then, I have 9 years overseas in 20 countries. Married now 48 years to a girl in my Confirmation class.

I like John de Baptiste de la Salle, who is the patron saint of teachers, which I am in the process of becoming. I also train martial arts and like St. Michael the archangel because he is a warrior and defender of the faith.

The problem is my given name is John Michael … lol

Any other suggestions?

It’s not a problem to use your given name if you are drawn to those saints (I used my middle name and chose Saint Elizabeth). But if you would still prefer something different, here are a few others you might consider.

I just found out today that I will be confirmed in the Catholic church and accepted into full communion on October 28th! I am a former Lutheran, and I’ll be confirmed this year on “Reformation Sunday” as it is celebrated in the Catholic church.

I really would like to choose Ignatius as my confirmation name. Ignatius of Loyola represents to me, someone who transitioned from a secular world to a passionate follow of Jesus and his church. He was also instrumental in reclaiming protestants to the Catholic church during the post reformation days - and the Jesuit schools did so as well.

I have never heard of anyone with this confirmation name - most of the people I have met have Michael, Mary, Paul, etc. Is this too weird for me to pick?

I don’t think it’s weird at all. Ignatius is well-known in the Church. I think you’ll find that if you focus on the saint who appeals to you, what others might think of your choice won’t matter at all. And an early congratulations on your upcoming Confirmation!
