A friend of mine fell and broke his leg. He paid $6,000 at the time of treatment, and maxed his credit card out. Then the hospital sent him a bill for an additional $11,000. He did not qualify for government assistance, but could not afford to pay the bill. His church came to his aid, and paid the bill. He is not Catholic. I don’t know if the Catholic Church would help in such a way, but you might try contacting your local priest for help to pay the bill.

I know of another case of a “heart attack”. The bill came to $453,000 for the surgery and 10 days in intensive care. That individual was able to find local private charities who picked up the tab. Have you checked around for private assistance in your area?

If you have no assets, then you can discharge the debt through bankruptcy. However, that has certain ramifications, and you should seek legal advice before going down that road. There are legal clinics and other resources for people with medical bills which they can’t pay. Medical bills are the single most common reason for personal bankruptcy in the US. It is a way to eliminate the debt. The hospital will survive just fine without your $2,500.
