TheIrishman;10779408]I’m about to head out to barnes and noble to pick up Catholicism for Dummies. I’m also going to search and try and find a Catechism. Any other books I should pick up for starting out?
Study your Catechism of Catholic Church with Sacred Scripture (NAB or compatible, a King James version of the bible is not recommended study with the CCC, because it is missing 7 of the cannoized books) and look up the references from your CCC. You may need a little assistance in how to study the CCC. See an RCIA instructor at your nearest parish.

**Secondly it may interest you to get a book on your Patron Saint Patrick who preached the gospel message to your ancestory homeland “Ireland”. **Learn from your Patron Saint and you cannot go wrong. Or any book on Catholic Saints, and history of the Catholic Church. Get this history from Catholics who lived through the centuries and wrote about it, than to get a history view from non-catholics.

May God keep you always;

Peace be with you

Praying for you as you continue to draw closer to Our Good Lord Jesus Christ & His Church.

May Our Good Lord Jesus continue to bless, keep, guide & protect you and all always.

Yes, let us know how your conversion is going. You can also start a blog if that is your style. That is what I am doing. There are some others that have done the same thing.

So i’m reading in the Catechism right now and just read “The Apostolic Tradition” and kind of received an a-ha moment.

One of the fundamental problems i’ve always struggled with in the LDS church is the Great Apostasy. And after reading this section i think i’ve finally come to the realization of two things.
  1. No need for the apostasy. Christ HIMSELF came down and taught the apostles. He then told the apostles to go out and teach all nations. According to what i’ve been taught in the LDS church, a great apostasy occurred with the death of the apostles. But if John the beloved is still alive and teaching everyone, along with all those people that were taught by Jesus and the apostles, how could a church fall that fast and why would Jesus fail so easily in establishing His church? Doesn’t make sense.
  2. God’s love is infinite. It’s quite crude really if you think that for 1800+ years our Lord and Savior abandoned us and left us in the dark. Why would He do that? Why wait that long? Why have to wait in the first place? It makes the work that Christ did for us while on the earth seem pointless. He was able to conquer death and Satan but can’t keep His church afloat? His love for us is to great to allow us to walk in darkness after coming to us. He wants us to have knowledge and be able to return with Him.
Just some things I’ve learned so far.

Yes, I was learning that somewhere in the forum too. Why was there an apostasy? I couldn’t understand it either until I realized that Jesus prevented it from happening when he taught his Apostles and all those people who listened to his sermons and parables. His Church was quietly being built from His Word.

Good work! I love it when people start discussing scriptures on the forum and tell everyone what they have learned. I have another link to give you that is perfect for beginners and who are going or starting RCIA. It has a lot of good teachings on scriptures and prayers.

Thank you for this. This link has some good info in it! Especially about the Trinity! It makes a little more sense to me. It actually explained it alot better than the Catholicism for Dummies book did. So I appreciate it! 👍

You are quite welcome! I came upon that site by accident. It is alot better huh?

Google The Coming Home Network, specialises in people converting. Also there is a fantastic Catholic app named Laudate. If you have a smart phone download it it is free. It is the most comprehensive app I have seen. Also download a rosary app, I prefer biblical ones as they tie the scripture to the prayers. God bless

You have hit upon a really important point that many seem to either discard or ignore. It was Christ who founded the Church, not man. It was Christ who promised to never leave us orphans, to remain with his Church until the end of time and to send the Holy Spirit to guide the Church into all truth. That is why the Church could never fail, in spite of what weak and evil men might do. We rest on the promise of God.

fantastic 👍

I really believe in using technology to help in our faith formation. If you have a Kindle then you can access the Church Fathers writings for pennies. If you don’t have a Kindle device, then you can download Kindle for pc free. Then upload your book archive to via Kindle for android etc.and carry your library with you. Also if you are interested and want to become acquainted with the Sacred Scriptures there is Agape Catholic bible study, which is online and also free, as in New Advent catholic dictionary. There’s lots out there to help you, when I was investigating the Catholic church, I was like a sponge, I wanted to soak it all up and the internet was a great resource. But there is no substitute for a priest, attending Mass and investigating through RCIA 🙂

Quick question about reason’s Catholics do what they do.

Intercession of Saints and Mary. Where did this doctrine come from and Whats the benefit of doing that instead of praying directly to God?

Thanks.
Peace2u2 wrote this here at CAF. I think it might help you better understand:

Here is an analogy to help you grasp the big picture of what a relationship with God looks like because it is certainly not what you are painting, just a me and Jesus only relationship. (keep in mind that Jesus was born into a family and so are we when we are baptized.):

Imagine that you are visiting a king and as you are being shown into his royal throne room, you notice immediately the beautiful music that is playing. As you step into the chamber, you are dazzled by the beauty of the place - gorgeous tapestries hang from the walls, there is stunning works of art adorning the walls, sumptuous carpet covers the floor. You see men and women dressed in splendid apparel and their faces shine with happiness, their countenances beautiful to behold. As you progress further into the room towards the king, you realize that the grandeur of the room grows accordingly. Finally, you reach the foot of the throne, and you gaze upon the king himself. He is magnificent, far more glorious than anything or anyone in the room.

You are overwhelmed by the regal beauty of his clothing, his crown, his scepter, his throne. But, the king himself is the center, the focal point of all the glory that surrounds him.

You can see that this king lavishes his wealth and love for beauty on everything and everyone around him.

Now, imagine that you are entering the throne room of a different king. The first thing that you notice is the absence of sound. There is no music. There are no exquisite tapestries to catch your eye, no works of art and no jewel-studded carpet. In fact, there are no people here. There is literally nothing in the room that could distract your attention from the king, who sits in magnificent glory on his throne, at the far end of the room. This room is bare of decorations and empty of people because this king is jealous of his glory. He doesn’t want you to become distracted by anything else - he wants you to see only himself.

So, which king is more glorious?
