Gracious and merciful Father, please come to their assistance.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

I’m praying …

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen

Well, one thing I’ve noticed is that when people have a problem with pride, often there are three things they will have difficulty doing.

Some people can never admit to a mistake. Now, for the vast majority of us, we make mistakes, practically on a daily basis. If we aren´t saying, “I made a mistake” with some frequency, and meaning it, in all humility, we probably have a problem with pride.

If you honestly are one who believes you never make a mistake, then you probably need to reevaluate that, see you probably make mistakes, and more often than you might realize, if you were to examine this more objectively.

Secondly, once you realize you have made a mistake, admitted it, at least to yourself, and if necessary, to another person, sometimes that isn’t enough. Sometimes, an apology will also be necessary if someone is hurt by it. So, we need to be able to say, “I’m sorry”.

I work with some people who I have never, in the year I have worked with them, never once, admitted to making a mistake, much less ever apologized for it. My previous supervisor, also, had that same problem. Once, she screamed at me, was wrong, never did admit to making a mistake or apologizing. This causes problems in relationships down the road.

Some people, men especially, can´t admit to themselves, or others, they are lost, for instance. They will sometimes waste all kinds of gas, time, and the goodwill of them around them, because they are prideful, will NOT admit, “I don´t know”.

People, and men, it’s okay to admit that you don´t know something once in a while. It’s not a sign of weakness, but of great strength. Only people who are very secure in themselves can admit when they are wrong, take responsibility for the mistake, and apologize, and admit they don’t know it all, after all. We are not expected to know everything all the time. We’re not God. To think we are is prideful, and wrong.

If some people who struggle with pride would do all 3 of these things, their relationships would fourish, prosper.

My father would make mistakes with us, NEVER, EVER, admit he was wrong. NEVER would apologize. I also can´t remember him ever admitting he didn´t know something.

If you aren´t doing all three of these things, I invite you to try this, even if you need to do it, gradually, and watch your relationships transform themselves and blossum.

Some people have a (false) idea of what humility is, think it means we need to everybody’s doormat, walk hunched over all the time, lacking in self esteem. Avoid the extremes…of thinking we are a slug on the ground or that the sun rises and sets on us, because it’s somewhere between these two.

We are not better than others, and not worse, either, but equals. That’s my 2 cents, for whatever it’s worth.

Oh yeah, and there is what I would call “good” pride and “bad” pride. I don’t believe there is anything wrong with wanting to look nice, dress well, have pride in our accomplishments and achievements.

Where it becomes problematic is when we like to believe others can’t ever do things like we can, that we are irreplaceable, because that’s generally not the case.

If we have to leave our job, leave someone else to take it over, we need to be glad that the work, or work of God, is being done, regardless of whether or not we are the instruments. If we insiste WE must be the instrument for that particular project, and nobody else, we need to ask ourselves if pride is a factor.

Others can oten do what we do, and we shouldn’t need to believe we are the best, the brightest.

We need to realize we can learn from others, even the meek, humble, and even simple minded. Sometimes, they can have great insight due to their sheer simplicity that eludes even the greatest of minds.

Even if you’re a genius, there are different ways of being smart.

Edith Bunker once said there is “book smart” and “people smart”. Sometimes, people who have excess pride are book smart but, due to arrogance, turn others off, lack diplomacy, tact, in day-to-day situations.

I believe a lot of people on the forum have excessive pride, that some, who believe they know the Bible more thoroughly, or history, will put other members down, often use a lot of sarcasm…not just once in a while, but pretty much all the time, chronically, at their main style of communicating.

Often, prideful people can be REALLY abusive, because, deep down, they believe they are better than others. So, you will often see them using a lot of symbols like the following:

:tsktsk:
and
:ehh:
or
:dts:

They often function from what, I believe it was Virginia Satire referred to as “Blamer mode”, with a lot of put downs, looking down on folks, judging people, usually very harshly.

Some are into this mode, chronically, I think due to excessive pridefulness, arrogance. Often, they can come across as VERY judgemental, all the time.

Oh…and sometimes, pridefulness leads to excessive perfectionism, to a point the perfectionism provokes problems in their relationships.

Because others can’t possibly ever live up to these unrealistic standards some place, no effort will ever be enough, nothing, and no one, will ever measure up or be “good enough”.

I just said a prayer to Blessed Mary for you to grow in humility and charity. Friend, you are already half-way towards your goal, seeing you have the *great desire *to be humble and charitable. God bless you.

**Most holy Virgin Mary,
by the love and fidelity with which thy Divine Son,
when fastened to the Cross,
confided thee to Saint John,
I confide to thee my soul, my body,
my thoughts, words, actions, and life,
especially the end thereof,
that moment which will decide my fate for eternity
as thou didst invite thy Son to thy most holy death,
so also I invite thee to mine,
entreating thee to be present thereat,
in the name of the love
with which thou didst assist at the dying of Jesus.

By the tears thou didst shed at seeing Him
incline His head and expire in such torments,
vouchsafe in thy maternal bounty,
to watch beside me and the members of my family,
and leave us not until thou hast introduced us into Paradise.

Amen.**

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Dear Friends,

I think the meaning of humility is manifold, but for me today it means keeping my word to Christ by not continually confessing the same old sins each time in the confessional, by actually putting in the time to develop my soul, mind, and body through exercise, studying the bible, and fasting - instead of just talking a good game.

I think I get ahead of myself thinking I’m wise and knowlgeable - just because the people I help get better - when in reality it is the blessing of God that heals my patients more then anything.

There are so many things I want to be, want to do, but in reality, it is the small daily sacrifices and acts of love that we humans are only really capable of.

I guess I had hoped for more then an ordinary life, but well, who can top the apostles after all?

No one can be stronger then Samson, wiser then Solomon, lead an army like St. Joan, or do great works of authority or power like our Lord.

What is left for us latter hour Catholics? Mortification, study under a lamp, prayerfully supporting our family, friends, and fellow humans with our rosaries? Fasting from time to time.

Don’t any of you wish you could do great deeds or move with the power of Christ to bring people back from their mundane lives.

I don’t know. What can a person do for our world and Lord to win souls? The path of love is not easy, and to be humble is a great asset. Who was the humblest of all? I guess after asking for all the other things, I’ve come to the point where I think humility is the best grace to ask for.

Thank you for your prayers and love.
