I need ideas for a care package!

Dear CAF family… I need some awesome ideas, for a Care Package.

The package is for my cousin and his wife… who are both suffering from serious health concerns. I want them to know that we are thinking about them… praying for them; and offer something that will help to ease the burden… just a bit. Maybe something that will even put a smile on their faces.

They are both in their 70’s. She has chronic heart and lung problems… and has been in and out of the hospital recently (she is IN, at the moment). He is suffering from a form of blood cancer, and is currently undergoing chemo. They are Christians… but not Catholic (in case anyone would suggest, Rosary’s or similar).

First I would suggest some gift cards to a healthy fast food type restaurant - Subway for example so when one is in the hospital the other can grab a quick, healthy meal and be with the one in hospital.

Some spiritual reading, like a book of Psalms, just Psalms.

Some small individual microwave type meals - all the major soup companies make them that are lower in sodium to boot.

Yes, my ideas are feed the body but that is because it is one thing when life is hectic in these situations that you forget to do for yourself.

I second the idea of microwave meals. Grocery shopping and cooking are taxing, even if you are relatively healthy.

Also maybe some home-made treats like cookies or cakes.

And even though, they are not Catholic, a “Spiritual Bouquet” would probably be appreciated. It is always comforting to know that someone is praying for your situation.
 
Thank you, both so much! I will definitely do the gift cards idea! I failed to mention, though… that they live in another state. So, the microwave food is probably not going to work out in this situation. It is a GOOD suggestion, though. I will get gift cards from Subway… for sure!

I think several books of stamps for their letters and bills would be greatly appreciated.
 
How about some stationary and stamps so that they can write to people while waiting for treatment. Ask other family members to write cards and include special memories that remind them of happier days. My father is a big fan of nuts so I send him trail mix–it keeps very well. He also likes to read Westerns so I keep an eye out for paperbacks that he might like and I send him a box. If they like to listen to music, maybe you could find a cd for them. When my mother was very ill, she would listen to old hymns that would remind her of growing up Methodist in Georgia in the 1930s. They were very comforting to her.

If you would like to put together a Spiritual Bouquet - I would like you to add “my internet friends” as one of the flowers, the name will mean nothing to them but knowing that those from around the world are praying will .

This is a simple thing to do if a bit time consuming - cut out flowers from construction paper, make strips of green and cut out leaf shapes. On the flowers write each person who is praying for them “My Internet Friends”, “Aunt Jane”. “Pastor John & his Wife”. “Father John”. etc. Glue all to a piece o
card stock (or heavier paper) in the shape of a bouquet and mail to them with the restaurant gift cards. You can make this bouquet as fancy as you want or as simple as you want.

Ask other family members to do the same.

I will be keeping them and all CAFers and their requests in my prayers.

We sent a care package to a friend being treated for cancer. It was recommended that he eat protein so we picked Omaha steaks. They offer dinners and desserts too.

You might consider DVDs anything happy and upbeat such as the Carol Burnett collection. I’m sure they remember her zaniness. Ditto for books. I’m sure they could relate to Bill O’Reilly’s book…Bold, Fresh, Piece of Humanity.

Magazine subscriptions…would give them something to look forward to each month.

Netflick subscription because it is mailed and they don’t have to go out.
 
*Hi there…here are some ideas:

*crossword puzzles
*daily devotional books
*candy to suck on…not something too sweet or chewy, but maybe like a butterscotch bag of mints
*some homemade cookies from you? (just a mini-batch)
*small box of tissues
*small frames to place pics of family in
*chex mix or some type of snack that’s in a small bag
*box of teas or coffees that they might enjoy

So kind of you to do this! ❤️*
