Hi everyone,

My pastor told my mom I arrive too early for mass, and my mom supports him. I find this bothersome, because i’ve been arriving early for mass for several months. My mom told me that we would leave for mass at her times from now on even when I have a driver’s license. I need some advice from you all as to how I should approach this situation. The number one thing I do not want to be doing is going against the fifth commandment.

Thanks,
In Christ,
Golden

Your pastor may not have intended it as a criticism, as to pray before Mass is a good thing, but if your mother insists, while you are under her roof you may need to comply.

I know it’s a painful thing to be denied the privilege of spending time quietly praying in the presence of the Lord. God bless you for that desire.

I hope you keep your desire to spend extra time with the Lord as you grow older and when you have left home.

Well how early have you been arriving before Mass? For what purpose?

You should comply with your mother and your pastor’s request.
The number one thing I do not want to be doing is going against the fifth commandment.
Do you mean the fourth commandment regarding honoring parents?

The fifth commandment is Thou Shall Not Kill.

How can you arrive too early? If the church is open then I can’t see a problem!

I arrive an hour before mass starts as I like to pray and I love the peacefulness of the church.

My priest has never objected to this.

There is a myriad of different reasons why the pastor might have said you are getting there too early, which would be perfectly legitimate.

To ascertain why the priest said that, I just want to ask, “do you spend all of the time you get there early praying in a pew, or walking around and speaking to people?”

However, in the end, since your mother has decided that you will arrive on time, you are subject to her decision.

I slightly suspect there may be some side detail which we don’t know which is the reason for the priest telling you not to get there so early.

I’m not sure how early you were getting there as you didn’t specify. You should listen to your pastor even if you disagree. You can always pray at home beforehand, plus in the car on the way there. While that may not be your first preference, it’s still prayer nonetheless. Don’t get too worked up about this-obey, be at peace and move on.😃

You should respect the wishes of your pastor and if you are a minor child submit to the authority of your mother.

The fourth commandment is Honor you Father and Mother, not the fifth.

Thank you all for your advice. My mom and I have spoken to each other, and everything seems to be well.

The purpose for arriving early at mass is to spend some time in the quiet reading Lives of the Saints or a good catholic book.

I am sorry about my typo with the fourth commandment.

Thankyou all again :), and I will continue to deepen my love, knowledge, and faith in God as best as I can.

Thanks,

That’s a great attitude to have. Who knows, maybe Our Lord is testing you.
