Close to a month ago I woke up and felt as if something in my life needed to change. For 14 long and painful years I drank myself to sleep. I woke up that morning and prayed that my desire to drink would be removed. I have not taken a drink since. When I quit the drinking it left a deep, dark void inside of me. I kept saying to myself I need something over and over. So here I am trying to figure out what I need to fill that void with. I thank god every night for what time i do have sober. In the morning I pray for courage and strength. In the last days of my drinking I was in a dark, dark place. I feel compassion for any person who has ever felt this. I think we should take a moment to pray for any suffering alcoholic.

I shall indeed pray with you and for you.
My uncle had a serious drinking problem, so he joined the volunteer fire department. He stays sober because he knows that when his pager goes off someone needs him.
This is just a suggestion. I hope that you can fill your void soon.

Derek, I hope you’ll feel less alone in your struggle and intention and also find a champion in Venerable Matthew Talbot who drank every day for around the time you have, and now his cause for canonization has been introduced as with God’s grace he turned his life around and he lived a good life. You don’t need to follow his particular methods, but Mass and Confession will support you, and the inspiration of his later sobriety may inspire you.

Derek one of my brothers struggled with that addiction. I know something of how distressing it is. I’ll remember you in prayer, as I do others struggling to overcome the addiction also. God bless you, Trishie 🙂

I am praying that you have the strength to stay sober, and that the Holy Spirit will fill your void.

Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

I think you have stated what is the fundamental truth for every alcoholic or addict, that they have been using some drug from nature to fill a spiritual void. Bless you for your courage in so doing. It is also true of addictive gamblers, sex addicts or anyone else with some compulsion that has taken over their life==they are trying to fill a void. It is also true of someone who has made another creature his idol–the controlling parent or spouse, the workaholic, the TV addict, the porn addict. That void is in every human heart and can be filled only by God. That is the reason for any success enjoyed through a 12 step program that preaches dependence upon and acknowledgement of a higher power. The original AA called this by the proper name, God.

recall the parable about the swept and garnished house. after one demon had been driven out, seven worse ones came to fill the void, because the householder had not filled the house with things of God. this is a parable about the soul.

Blessed Matt Talbott, pray for us. You will gain a great deal by reading the story of his life, which is similar to your own. He also quit cold turkey, but he did it through consecrating his life, including especially this struggle, to God every day.

You have discovered the beginning of true freedom, we will be praying for you as you return to Christ in the sacraments and the Word, and service to His Church and His poor. If we are honest we will realize we all need to be part of this prayer to control whatever separates us from God. I will my prayer time today for you.

I will also pray with you and for you each and every day. Indeed alcoholism is a serious disease. May I suggest that the time you used to spend drinking in the evening be spent reading the Bible. Just open it at random and see what God has to tell you and how joyful you can be knowing how much He loves you. God is always with you and will not leave you orphaned!

Hail Mary,

Praying hard for you to keep staying sober and to find something positive to fill the void in your life.

Praying from today’s Liturgy of the Hours:

Grant that today we may journey forward in your love:
may all that happens be for our good and the good of others.
– Lord, lead us in your footsteps.

Thank you everyone. I am currently involved in a twelve step program and every reply that have gotten here gives me hope. I am still sober today which is a miracle in itself. Thank you everyone your prayers give me hope. 🙂

Our Father, which art in Heaven
Hollowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven

Give us this day, our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us

Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil

Amen

I am praying that you have the strength to stay sober, and that the Holy Spirit will fill your void.
Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;

Give us this day our daily bread;

Jesus please walk with Derek every day, every moment, and when temptation arises, please give him strength to refrain from obsessing and from succumbing. Thank You, Jesus

I’ll say a prayer for you too 🙂

but I have a suggestion for you as well. Maybe this void will be filled by the Most Holy Eucharist. Read up on the Real Presence and consider attending Confession (if you haven’t been already) and go to Mass shortly thereafter. I am confident that with enough faith the Eucharist will fill the void that drinking left behind.

Here’s a link to get you started:

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Dear Lord, see me through these hard times. In these troubling times, I am filled with unspeakable fears. I reach out my hand to you now, And ask you to walk besides me. I cannot carry all my burdens, But I know you can, and will. Please walk beside me. Please guide me. Please help me hold on strong, Through the trials and storms. Help me hold on to my faith, In even the darkest hour. Stay with me Lord, And show me Your way. In your love and Holy Spirit I abide. Amen.

I thank You God for Your gift of courage and strength to Derek. Please continue to help him remain sober and flourishing in health and productive life.

Thank You loving God!

More prayers for you God bless

Lord, put courage into my heart, and take away all that may hinder me serving you.
Free my tongue to proclaim your goodness, that all may understand me.
Give me friends to advise and help me, that by working together our efforts may bear abundant fruit.
And, above all, let me constantly remember that all my actions are in vain unless they are guided by your hand.Amen

O my God, I know that you love me. And I know that you want me to be happy, safe and secure, But sometimes it’s so hard to find you in all my troubles. I know that there are many people worse off than me, But please help me with my problems. I’m so worried, God. Please help me find the support I need. Please help me not to worry too much. Please help me to be humble enough to accept help from others. Please help me to stay away from the “what ifs” and the “if onlys.” Please help me to remember to help others, even when I still need help. And please help me to trust in your loving kindness, your care and your grace. Because I know that you love me, and you know that I love you. And if all you want to give me right now is your love, Please let that be enough for me. Amen.

Hang in there, Derek. We’re still praying for you and keeping you close to our hearts, just as Jesus does. Just remember that when God closes a door He never fails to open a window.
Peace and love to you!
