so. I mest up. I masturbated. But I really thought it was okay. and I think its venial. Any way. im going to confession ASAP. but thats the thing. do i have to go asap. I could ask my parrents but they are so stubborn. they are like " just pray" they are catholic but not serious.
I dont want to ask. but this is a big problem and I just usually confess to my school priest but i am on spring break. what a break right. I sin right after school 😦 thats not fun 😦

BUT

since its venial I know im forgiven. and dont worry i have contrite heart and stuff. I really am sorry for offending God. but can I just wait for confession when spring break is over?

He is the only true Judge of our hearts to say for sure if it’s venial or not, so to be on the safe side (even if you believe you have full perfect contrition) I would go to confession. The “worst” that could happen is that you get Grace to help keep you from sin again. I don’t know about you but I sure need all I can get!!!😊 🤷

If I were you, I would go at the nearest oppurtunity, which would probably be saturday for me if I was in your in position, But if I could go earlier, I would. Ill be praying for you I struggled with this for a long time, and I hope/pray you get through this.

The sooner you confess, the sooner it’s off your soul. Plus, you get all those graces to help you stay away from this sin.

I thought this sin was a grave matter / a mortal sin.
Could somebody verify that?
Thanks!

no. it has to go under giudlines like.

1 know its wrong
2 do it any way.

that kindve thing I think 🙂

Well if I were you I would go to confession just to have a perfect conscience. You know (basically) what constitutes a mortal sin however you still ask. This tells me that you wish to alleviate your conscience of this burden.

In the past, I had convinced myself a mortal sin wasn’t a mortal sin so that it would be ok for me to commit it. It doens’t work that way.

There are 3 things that make a sin mortal instead of venial:
  1. It must be a serious/grave matter
(masturbation is serious according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church)
  2. The person must know that it is a serious sin at the time that they do it.
  3. The person must choose to commit the sin (it cannot be someone forced to do something with a gun to their head for example)
In the future, if someone is in doubt about what the church teaches on some topic, check the catechism. It is available in a searchable format online.

Gerbel,

If you really did not think masturbation was a serious sin when you did it, then the sin was venial. However, even venial sin damages our relationship with God. Mortal sin actually separates us from God.

A very smart man once told me that each venial sin is like a big nasty bug hitting our car’s windshield. One or two bugs will not stop the car from driving, but eventually the windshield will be hard to see through and we might wreck out. Confession is like taking the car through the wash. We come out all shiny and new again with nothing blocking our vision.

I would go to confession if I could get there somehow. Otherwise, just to be on the safe side, I would not take communion when I was at mass until I could go. No one will know why you don’t receive, if that is what you decide.

Well said, jc-servant.

I just want to offer some ideas on mitigating circumstances that wouldn’t…justify this isue, but it may be a possiblility. I say this with the sincere intent that our posts bring peace to the OP.

if I am correct in this assumption that he thinks that this was a venial" sin, that’s a keyword for “maybe it wasn’t my fault.” Know what? He may be right in his example.

There are examples of waking up from dreams or seminal emission unknowingly happening in a half-waking state, not realizing the unintentional stimulation is hapening. In a half-sleep state, let’s presume that it’s unintentional, ok? (Since we’ve gone over what constitutes a mortal sin already…)

I just wanted to throw that out there, which would mean that even a person with a well-formed conscience

a) may not realize the gravity of the matter, though their waking/sleeping state
b) probably not realize they’re sinning, again because in sleep, we are not in total control of our faculties
c) most definately not knowingly choosing their actions.

In all due chaity and humility, I believe the OP posted because it was an unintentional event, that may have been beyond his control because his rational faculties may not have been fully engaged (sleep/wake cycle).

If this is this case, it’s not a venial sin, but Gerbil, if it’s still on your conscince, by all means take brigid12’s advice: “to be on the safe side (even if you believe you have full perfect contrition) I would go to confession.”

ohh. I didnt do it during sleep. But it is long story. im going to confession any way. its just I was curious if I could wait till the end of spring break. but I will ask parrents to take me early. thx for advice

Hello everyone,

on a first note, OP you must now know that every further time you commit this sin it will now be a mortal sin no matter which way you rationalize it to yourself. Now you know it is grave matter, you know it separates you from God, and you did it anyways. So, go on off to confession and don’t take any chances.

Next up, don’t get down on yourself. Trying to go a certain amount of time and failing could discourage you, but don’t. Eventually, after many confessions and lots of praying, you will find your outlook changed, and you will make progress. Trust me, i have been there my friend.

Setting a time kind of challenges the body, and it makes the temptations stronger. After a few months of hard work, I came to a nice little realization, with the help of confession. As a man, i cannot deny or try to beat my weaknesses. I will be tempted. Denying my very nature ended up making me sin more than ever. So, i accepted my frail human nature, and chose Jesus over that. I know it sounds simple, but it was truly profound when it dawned on me.

When you have temptations praise the Lord for making you a healthy male, and ask him to give you the strength to be a good spiritual man as well. Also, remember, Jesus had “one of those things” too. If he could deal with these problems, then so can we.

In prayer,

-Revelations
