I need to make a decision about Girl Scout cookies

I work with kids. I’ll buy a single box from a couple of the girls who sell. But the fact is, not only can I get basically the same cookies way cheaper at the grocery store, but I do not willingly support anyone who promotes and supports Planned Parenthood and their war on women, if I have ay choice in the matter.

We believe these matters are best discussed by girls with their families.”

If you don’t want to take their word for it, the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry investigated the Girl Scouts already and have refuted the allegations for years. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops started an investigation two years ago and hasn’t yet ruled against the Girl Scouts–they expressed concerns to the Girl Scouts and the Girl Scouts made some changes and everything settled down–but no ban. I trust Church organizations more so than stuff I find online–so that’s good enough for me.

There are several troops sponsored by our parish that are associated with the Catholic school. We are allowed to sell cookies before and after Mass right there in the Vestibule. The priests even recognize Girl and Boy Scouts once a year in our parish. And I live in a very conservative diocese.

But if a person really still has a problem with it, don’t buy of course. Or, if you really want to support the local girls and leave the national organization out of it, you can always give a donation directly to the troop. 100% of the money given to a troop stays in a troop and is spent on those girls. Especially if your troop is associated with your Church and run by Catholic parents/guided by your priest (like the one my daughter is in), then that should put your mind at ease.

There is a ton of misinformation out there about the Girl Scouts floating around the internet. Don’t take it all at face value.

It is not intrinsically immoral to buy their cookies. The Catholic Church still has a relationship with the Girl Scouts through the NCCGSCF (look at their FAQ for further info on some of the stuff floating around the internet). Many Catholic parishes still sponsor troops and there are still half a million Catholic girls in the program. If it were immoral to be involved with Girl Scouts (and to buy the cookies), the bishops would have cut ties completely and told all Catholic parishes to cut ties. That has not happened.

Now, might an individual Catholic decide they don’t like Girl Scouts anyway and choose not to support them? Sure. But we ought not pretend it is anything other than an individual decision.
 
Feel free to send them to the UK. One of the few things I miss from the States. That and Cool Whip.

That has the major drawback of leaving you with a cookie gap.

I always hate buying the cookies. Not for any reason other than I can’t eat them. I end up giving them away. Or freezing them forever.

My husband only wants a couple of boxes, not because they are so good, but because he can’t say no to the little girls.

Good to know that I can simply hand them money and not take any cookies and all of that money goes to their own troop.
 
Just this week I have been faced with a very similar question…My daughter has been in Girl Scout since she ever could and every year she has been among the TOP with Cookie Sales.

I have done a lot of research on this subject and have even talked personally with a former GS Leader who was horrified at the information she found when searching for the truth about GS ties to Planned Parenthood.

As Catholics we believe that abortion is a mortal/ grave sin and to assist in abortion is also a mortal/grave sin. To say that I am willing to commit a sin that separates me from Our Lord,only because I like how cookies taste is as to taking the whips to CHRIST’S backside.

GSUSA will say that they do not support PP. But that is a lie….GSUSA is guilty by association all GS are also members of WAGGGS who support PP.

But also former CEO of GS admitted in an interview that GS have teamed up with PP.

Saw a group of girls outside of Sam’s Club.

Handed them cash, as a donation.

They were thrilled.

And I didn’t have to support PP in the process.

But you did!!! Any money that GS get is supporting PP. GS pay membership dues to WAGGGS and WAGGGS support PP.

That has been debated round and round and round and round. In any case, remote, remote, remote (I think that is enough) cooperation with abortion is no worse than guilt by association. One cooperates more with evil every time one goes shopping.

I have been around the anti-GS circles. I say circle because the one thing they have in common is that they all link each other as evidence, as basically stem from two anecdotal facts. Suffice it to say that as for me and my house, I won’t sweat it. The Church has looked into these allegations and they still partner with them. Not everything we read on the internet is true.

Money give like that goes directly to the troop and is spent on the girls in the troop for troop activities and such. The troop doesn’t pay anything to Girl Scouts or even their Counsel or service unit (although individual girls pay dues to their Counsel). The only way anyone other than the girls gets that money is if the troop disbands with money left in its troop checking account. Then the money is taken by the service unit (which is part of the Counsel, which is part of the Girl Scouts of the US, which is then a member of WAGGS).

Think of it this way, If WAGGGS is the UN, And The GS of the US is the United States ad is a member of the UN (WAGGGS). Counsels are States. Service Units are counties within states. And the troops are small towns in the counties. Do you think by donating money to your local fire department fundraiser that you are somehow funding the United Nations and their programs? That’s about the same stretch.

I think the more appropriate question, instead of cookies, is do we support organizations like GSA locally, if the local troop is morally sound or do we not. I understand what Fr. Z is saying in the above blog. For sure, retreat may be what some feel is needed in this battle. We each have to respond to our own conscience.

I am doing the boy scouts thing now and some have said they are dropping out. I intend to stay and hold the line as long as possible. I think scouting is a valuable tool in raising children and I do not want to abandon the program to the enemy.

The opposite may be true. Many parishes have partnership with Girl Scouts and give the Catholic awards at Mass.
