I enjoy these forums very much. That being said, it amazes me how we seem to entertain sin and try to get our lifestyles approved in the threads we post. Look, I’m a former Marine and I know that this comes out in my Catholic Christian spirituality. But I think this is a good thing. Why all the polls about contraceptives? If you’re using them STOP IT!!! you should know by now how the church feels about it. If you fall and sin GET UP DUST YOURSELF OFF WITH CONFESSION AND FLY RIGHT. I really believe there’s only one way to be a Catholic and that’s TO THE BONE. We all need to educate ourselves and find out what the church teaches and do it. It seems we want to have a faith that allows us to have one foot in church and the other foot in the house of ill repute. And then we agonize with it and don’t want to hear the truth. Look, charity doesn’t always mean hearts and flowers. I seem to remember our Lord whipping a few individuals. We don’t know the rest of the story but I wouldn’t be surprised if those men became great saints because of it. … Mortal sin must be awful to us. Everybody falls, go to confession as soon as you can. Then begin again. We shouldn’t compromise with sin at all.

Your thoughts.

Well, while ideally everyone should know, due to numerous reasons, alot of people don’t know alot when it comes to moral issues. Many of those who do actually have a clue don’t realize the gravity of it and how serious it is. I see it frequently in my life that alot of people simply do not understand how serious some of these sins are.

That being said, everyone has their flaws. When you get a bunch of people on one forum trying to improve themselves and their faith, you are going to get alot of questions about sin. We are our brothers’ keepers. We’re here to help each other in charity. Sometimes that’s through tough love, sometimes through stating the blunt truth, sometimes through compassion, and sometimes through sympathy.

:clapping: My own struggle is getting to Mass. I have health problems. Each week it is a conversation with myself, “Am I a too ill to go to Mass or is this just laziness?” When it is illness I have to come to peace. Laziness just requires a swift kick in the you know where.

You are absolutely right, Safe Eagle.
We should also never drink while driving, never have dirty dishes in the sink (oops), each day we should: read the Bible and pray, floss our teeth, exercise, read to our children, never lose our temper, be sympathetic to neighbors, wear our seatbelts, be on time to work without fail, and so on and on ad infinitum.
We are surrounded by voices competing for our time and attention, and often they conflict with Catholic teaching. Setting priorities is not always easy. Not everyone has the discipline of a Marine.
Even I who try to do all these things, because who wants illiterate children, bad teeth, dangerous driving, unhygenic conditions, etc, burn out occasionally and put my feet up and let it all go to pot.
I really can’t blame others who aren’t perfect from a moral standpoint. Some days my goal is just not to yell at my kids.

Very good post. I am a cradle Catholic, and I am still learning so much about the Church teachings and moral theology. Sometimes I am amazed at how much I DON’T know!

Discovering that actions that are commonplace and acceptable in your life are actually grave sins is very painful. I discovered this by living it. It can be a very tender time in a person’s faith journey. Compassion, patience, and truth can help them through it. Attachment to sin isn’t overcome just because someone (even the Church) tells you to “stop it”. Pray for them.

I know the OP didn’t say this, but I’m saddened by the many posts I read that assert that “cafeteria” Catholics should leave the Church. I’m proof positive that today’s “cafeteria” Catholic can become tomorrow’s strict-adhering Catholic. It has been my experience that many, many “cafeteria” Catholics are the result of poor catechesis. They simply do not know that it is a serious issue.

one way that CAF has helped me is with the issue of contraception. I believe ABC is a grave evil. However, my dh is pro ABC. A very orthodox, but young priest told me that I could not consent to sexual relations that have contraception (even if dh is the one initiating it and I have no part in it). He told me that I would be in mortal sin to even consent to the act.

My husband and I almost separated over the issue. After much pain and marital difficulties that spanned three years, my dh consented to using NFP for a number of years.

Then, recently, he has been refusing to use NFP again. From reading the threads on CAF and esp. Fr. Vincent Serpa, I learned that as long as I don’t consent to the ABC, I can preserve my marriage.

So, sometimes, these threads that seem so tedious because really we should all know better can be very helpful.

The church has stated often enough that it is a hospital for sinners, not a hotel for saints.
While I agree that no one should ever sin, we’re going to.

That’s a good phrase. I’ll have to remember that one. 🙂

used contraceptives. If they were posting here right now, would their typically ‘Marine’ personalities also become apparent? What the heck does your Marine Corps past have to do with this? 🙂

 I understood it to mean that Marines don’t mess around making excuses. They just do the right thing.

Yeah. That’s the way I understood it too. That militaristic personality that knows right from wrong. 🙂

Good morning Safe Eagle,
Whilst ideally you are right, the reality is that there is great dissent amongst catholics especially where it concerns moral issues, i.e. contraceptives, homosexuality, pre marital sex, abortion, etc.
The rejection by the catholic population of Humane Vitae has contributed to the moral confusion which exists even within the church and perhaps even the church heirarchy.
Humane Vitae, was/is perhaps the most important encyclical ever written because it speaks about the contra (against) ception (begining of life) and in doing this highlights the importance of holding “life” as sacred. Until the Catholic population at least, accepts this enclyclical, together with Donum Vitae, Evangelium Vitae, Castii Conubii, (as a group)
nothing will change. These encyclicals were delivered during a century of assault against life. All kinds of assault.
More is the pity that we didnt really recognise these as gifts from the Holy Spirit, given during a time of trial and as a help during these times.
God Bless you and may your Christmas be a happy and Holy one.
Grace Angel.:angel1:
