Right, I don’t disagree. My point was to highlight the difference between intentionally and carelessly overindulging, whether of food or drink. I agree that there are complicating moral factors to overindulging in alcohol too.

Right. Eating food is not intrinsically evil either. So eating too much on an occasion doesnt necessarily equal gluttony.

I can think of some other examples of gluttony besides that. Intentional and unnecessary abuse of an animal, such as the practice of shark finning. Denying appropriate nutrition to those dependent on you in order to afford or more easily obtain preferred food (or substances) for yourself. Intentional destruction of the environment (or someone else’s environment) in order to obtain food. (THis one is pretty rare in our society, since most of us are so far removed from the process of food production, but it COULD happen.) Another would be stealing food. (Very common in offices.)

Exactly. Before Thansgiving the USCCB would have to put out a brochure warning of the grave danger of eating too much stuffing and mashed potatoes. Having too much for dinner just is not grave matter.

But…but…look at this obscure footnote from a 16th century Vatican document! I’m more Catholic than you! 🤬

Go to Communion. Then talk to a good priest about sin so you can sort out any questions or issues 🙂

A couple of suggestions:
  1. buy a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (any decent bookstore should have it, including Amazon) and then read it.
  2. Get a regular confessor and then stick with him; and find a spiritual director (that priest or someone else capable of spiritual direction).
  3. Stop asking “Is this a mortal sin” to people who are not priests - meaning people on the internet. Some are not qualified to answer such questions. Your pastor is.
