I placed 6 flyers promoting Catholicism on a table near the office of my apartments and they were thrown away

Hey everyone. I am so saddened and angry right now. I placed 6 flyers on the table near the office of our apartment building promoting Catholicism and all 6 of them were thrown away. I know this because I live in a very small apartment building and there is no way that 6 flyers would just disappear in 2 days. I would print out more and place them out there but I know they’d probably just get thrown away too. I was trying to evangelize people by putting these flyers out but how am I to evangelize if people are just going to throw the flyers away???
 
You have to expect that that can happen. Some people are very opposed to Catholicism. I wouldn’t let one person like that let you down. If I were you, I would print twice as many and post each one in a different place around town, such as public bulletin boards. You could use your imagination and, say, include one in the envellope which you send in a payment for a utility bill.

Don’t be angry. Expect that sort of thing, there’s a lot of ignorant unbelievers and anti-Catholics out there. I prefer a more personal touch. I ask people if they are religious. I get different reactions. If the say they are I get them to tell me about their church if I can tell them about my experiences and my Church. If they say that they are not religious, I tell them that God loves them and wants them to come home. I got the greatest charge out of telling my psychologist about my conversion to the Catholic Church. If I suspect they are Christian, I will ask them if the are Catholic. I have found a lot of Catholics that way. I ask the if they attend mass. I go to dialysis 3 days a week and I know who is Catholic and who is not. I listen to the promptings in my mind that tell me to say something to someone. And I never use force. If you are sincere and smile you can talk to almost anyone. All we are doing is planting seeds. It is up to the Holy Spirit to bring those seeds to life. I haven’t been bit yet. Besides people don’t know what to do with a Catholic who is willing to witness to them.
 
Perhaps you should try evangelizing with actions rather than flyers. Maybe its a sign you need to take a different approach.
 
It might not be anti-Catholicism, just a sense of order perhaps combined with irritation at any and all religious or political pamphlets. Could it be that a tenant, janitor or manager is just annoyed at seeing “foreign materials” on the table…?
 
what are the rules on posting or distributing such literature in your building? if it is against the rule they should have been thrown away. If they were seen by the cleaning people as litter, they should be thrown away. If you want to post something find out the rules and put the flyer where it is allowed, otherwise find a more effective way to get your message across. How would you feel if JW or other tracts were allowed to be distributed in that space?
 
First of all, you do NOT know that they were thrown away.

BUT, did you get the approval of the apartment management to do this? If you did not, then the manager would be well within their rights to throw away such literature.

This is NOT the way to evangelize. People have the right to be in their own residence, without someone pushing their own religious beliefs at them. Most apartment complexes that I have lived in would get rid of such literature immediately, regardless of what faith was being promoted.

The last thing that most people want to do is come home after a hard days work, and discover some religious fanatic that is trying to convert them (and yes, most people would see such distribution of literature in this manner as being the work of a fanatic).

I am 100% in favor of evangelization, but not by an approach such as thins. This is much more likely to alienate people, than it is to call them in.
 
I really believe that we can better spread the faith by our actions and by how we live the faith ourselves because we are the ones that people are watching.
 
You may be right–we can best affect people by our actions. But the printed word too can be of service in giving people faith. St. Augustine when he was living an immoral life was in the garden of his home and heard the words, “take up and read,” and then picked up the Bible, and when he read it was instnatly converted. I also know someone who was converted to Catholicism mainly by a pamphlet he picked up in the rack in back of a parish church. Actually, I would think that there are some people who would not to care to deal with someone who, face to face, tried to convert them, but who would read a pamphlet because they would think that such pressure was not being put on them. And there are many people helped by the postings on these forums on Catholic Answers, which, also, are media of the printed word. And of course there are those who are effected when they read the Bible–its books are all pamphlet sized. I think that passing out literature can also be helpful when it comes to spreading the faith.
 
What kind of flyers did you have? Have any electronic copies?
 
Didn’t you just ask recently if it was OK to remove and discard flyers from other faiths? It’s not only Catholics who have such impulses.
 
Holly, did you get permission from management to leave them there in the first place? If not, then likely maintence in order to keep the area clutter free rightfully tossed them.

No, I did not. However, people put flyers there all the time and nobody seems to care. That said, somebody found the flyers and put them back on the table where I had left them. 🙂 I just noticed them there a little bit ago. :extrahappy:
 
Do you have any of the flyers that you can post on here? I have been looking for somethinh generic I could hand out promoting the faith. Most tracts I see are on a specific topic and I was wanting something a bit more Catholicisim as a whole.

Who does the table belong to?
Did you have permission to put things there?

There are many places where people are not free to put up advertisement for things. Find out what the rules are for that place.

This is a true statement. I think an even truer statement is that most people are opposed to having someone else’s faith shoved in their face regardless of what it is. While I realize that was not the OP’s intent that’s very likely how it was perceived.

I am very curious as to what the flyer said as it may not be the message so much as the way it was presented.
