i have decided to start praying the rosary. but i do not have one. i have found on i tunes a catholic bible, calendar, divine mercy chaplet and a rosary. turns out i have the same birthday as the Blessed Virgin!
so anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew if using my i pod as a rosary counts? or do i actually have to be holding a real rosary for the prayers to count? thanks!

Saying the prayers is the only thing that matters; Rosary beads are just a tool to count the prayers and keep focused.

Sorry, a bit of a different question here, but related–

I heard of a friend who had a recording of Pope JPII saying the rosary. Does anyone know where I can get something like this? Either download or buy?

Thanks! muchly appreciated 🙂

I think there is a recording of the pope doing the rosary on ewtn.com. Go to the top and click “library” and then click “audio library.” I would link it but I’m typing this from my phone.

Also, there is a free app that you need to download. It’s called Mass Times. It’s good for if you are traveling and need a mass or just need to get to a mass in your area.

You can pray the Rosary without holding the actual Rosary beads… after all, God gave us 10 fingers! Personally, I think it’s easier with the Rosary beads in hand… but whenever I’ve lost or dropped my Rosary (or left it in my car/purse), I use my fingers to keep track.

I would send you a Rosary, free of charge. Or I’m sure there are several other apostolates devoted to the Rosary that would send someone a Rosary for free.

i appreciate that, but you don’t need to send me one. i can order one online, i just haven’t done it yet. there don’t seem to be a whole lot of options for men’s rosaries, but the women…wow do you guys have all kinds of different designs!

besides, i don’t really know what i would want, other than one made of wood. there’s so many different centerpieces, etc, it would be hard to decide.

There are several nice mens rosaries available from the Sisters of Mt. Carmel in Colorado. Almost as nice as the ladies versions.

They have all kinds of price ranges. I have one of their handmade rosaries and it is a work of art, destined to be a family heirloom one day .

I would suggest looking around at antique shops. They usually have tons of old rosaries that have wooden beads. The only problem is if it’s been blessed, it can’t be sold. So unless you are dealing with someone who knows where it came from and whether it’s been blessed, you have to take your chances concerning whether or not it was ever blessed. 🤷

Of course, as many have said before me, you do not need the physical rosary in your hand. Beads are beads, not magic and it is the prayer that counts. However, you can’t get an iPod blessed like you can a rosary. Not to mention, the devil doesn’t flee at the sight of an iPod but, he does tremble at the sight of a blessed rosary. If you need one, I caqn send you one in the mail if you pm me an address you feel comfortable in giving me. You can also find several places online that will send you a free rosary such as:

or

rosaryarmy.com/

God bless!👍

P.S. EDIT: Don’t be afraid to use any rosary, girly or not. When I was teaching my bible school children I gave them their first rosaries and I told them “The rosary is not a toy or jewelry, it is a spiritual weapon and very powerful prayer so, I don’t want to hear complaints about what color you get because that doesn’t matter at all, it is a rosary, one of the most important items you will ever own.” Now, of course there is nothing wrong with purchasing a rosary you like the looks of and of course some are prettier than others. However, I get all of my rosaries from my grandmother and feeling how I feel about the rosary, I am never embarrassed to pray publicly with a rose pink crystal rosary or an aqua blue crystal rosary. I have a couple nice wood ones and a stone one blessed by jp2 too but, most of the rosaries I own would be considered feminine. I don’t care. A rosary is a rosary.

Normally for a men’s rosary, I use hematite. It’s masculine looking and it has a good weight to it. I make rosaries too. If you really really need one, I’ve got the beads and all I have to do is bead them and send it to you.

Another good app I downloaded was prayer HD. It has tons of Catholic prayers and chaplets. It was for free when I downloaded it (some kind of promotion) but now it has gone back to 1.99. It’s still an excellent source for great catholic prayers.

You might want to look up the divine mercy chaplet too. It’s a great devotion and is prayed for the souls in purgatory.

Actually, blessed items can be sold. They just lose their blessing. That’s why people are able to pawn a blessed wedding ring if they end up not getting married. (The only reason I’m using that situation is because there was a question on the AAA forum that was answered by Father Serpa that I have chosen not to cite because I am typing on a phone and that’s too difficult.) Blessings are non transferable to prevent simony. Sorry I didn’t track down the real response. 🙂

That’s right. Blessed items can be sold for their value as an item, not for their blessedness. Keep in mind that you can get your car and house blessed!

from what ive always understood, theres nothing wrong in not using rosary beads.

But im pretty sure they are graces given from our lady for doing so with the beads? not 100% but thats what i thought.

i dont think you should use your ipod as a substitute if you have the option to use an actual rosary also.

Ave Maria!

I work at a large parish and we always have a large collection ‘lost’ rosarys. Some are very nice but never used. Check out rosaryarmy.com/ They will send you a rosary, but more importantly, they will show you how to make a knotted rosary. I carry one of their rosarys in my pocket everyday. It is very durable and has lasted a lot longer than a beaded rosary.

This is for littletherese3,

I have the two CD set of JPII saying the Rosary in Latin while at St. Peters.
I really don’t care for it as he doesn’t use the Fatima prayer at the end of each decade.

You are welcome to it. Just send me an address to ship it to. Ouch, Australia. Perhaps send me a self addressed stamped shipping envelope. Your postmaster should be able to estimate the cost.

If therese3 doesn’t want it but someone else does. Just PM me.

The ipod would be a really good idea for times when you have mindless busy work to get done, but would rather be praying the rosary–doing dishes, mowing the lawn, that type of thing. 🙂

Although I’d rather say the rosary with the actual beads in hand, I have a nice CD set that I bought recently for just that purpose. Very useful so far.
