Thanks for the response, Elizabeth. On count two you’ve assumed that my intent is to convince others of my personal convictions. Not so. My intent was to discuss the interpretation of biblical verses and early Church Fathers writings regarding modern day homosexuality issues. I noticed all your effort in your reply had nothing to do with my response to your suggested reading. I believe my response to the OP was that if he was Catholic he needs to follow Catholic doctrine; or something like that. Also, it is not Helminiak’s purpose to convince other Catholics to separate from the Church. I believe that he has been very vocal about remaining with the Church. I have not proselytized at anytime. Why do you keep trying to put words in my mouth that I do not speak?
As for count one, have I not put forward the same advise regarding how to read scripture? As said earlier, I responded to your suggested reading. I posted what I believe to be sound interpretation to biblical passages. I received no response regarding what you differ with my interpretations. I know what Catholic faith teaches in regards to Natural Law (Divine) and I see how this conflicts with the interpretation of scripture. Your Catholic faith is not what I wish to address. I simply was addressing scripture. I use the Jerome Biblical Commentary(JBC), ed., 1968 and most often use the NAB, ed., 1970. There is no other commentary that I use. I will often check with the Catholic Encyclopedia or Catholic Answers; if only to get insight into Catholic thought; or to seek further direction to exam further what I am studying. The only time that I disagree with the JBC, 1968 is when Church doctrine is added to the commentary; because it often contradicts the commentary’s exegesis.
Look, if you are not up to interpreting scripture, just say so. If you can, I am interested in your interpretation, not the Catholic Church’s doctrine. You condemn homosexual acts by the Church’s take on natural law and sex outside of marriage. I get that. I’m interested in your interpretation of the scripture. If not yours, some other Catholic.
