I hope that someone will be able to help me. I recently received a relic of St Therese of Liseux and I just want to know if it is a 2nd class relic, it came from Liseux with a letter (which is in Latin which I can’t understand). The only words I could desipher( sorry for the poor spelling) was ‘of the cloth’, I’m taking this to mean that it came from her clothing. I will try and see if it is possible for me to upload a picture of the relic and the letter.

Based on what I have said, is it a 2nd class relic?

(Sorry for my ignorance :o)

My dear friend

It’d be a 3rd class relic I’m sure. Treat it like a blessed object and look after it to ensure no sacrilege thru mishandling. A great one to have. I may have one. I wear a dozen or so around my neck in secret. i’m sure it helps. You know to touch it whilst praying to her. Ask for a flower from her. it’s worked a great deal - an old tradition.

My brother did this when coming home to Rome and his little daughter gave him a flower the next day. She only did it this once.

God bless:thumbsup:🙂

It is very likely third class, though occasionally 2nd classes get widely distributed especially for the more modern saints and causes for canonization.

After all, if the saint used or had something, it’s quite easy to slice it and dice it into enough pieces to make a 2nd class relic distributable to very many people. A habit, a pillowcase, a book. . .

Take good care of it. 🙂

Every class of relic is special!

It’s in a small case and under the piece of cloth it has the saints name. I will certanly try to upload a picture to make it more clearer.

To my knowledge, a second class relic is a piece of cloth that was touched to the first class relic. A third class relic is a medal/scapular that was touched to the first class one.

Second class is something the saint used in life. Third is something touched to first. 🙂

You’re very blessed to have received such a precious gift from the Little Flower herself. 🙂

My colleague did her Ph.D work on Blessed Theresa of Calcutta (known then as Mother Theresa). When she stayed with the Daughters (Sister?) of Charity, she received from Mother Theresa a couple Miraculous Medals. Shortly after that, my wife and I switched from Protestantism to Catholicism, at which time my colleague made us a present of these MMs. So, are these relics? I wear mine every day.

My dear friend

If Mother Teresa touched them they are 3rd class relics and something to be treasured.

God bless you:thumbsup:🙂

I can’t tell you about this relique of yours, but I was given a relique of St Therese by our (then) priest who told me it was a 2nd grade one. It is in a small enclosed triangle stiched at the side. It was given me at the time of my being helped by her for the way fo living best for me. I hope you gain help the same way if that is what is being asked of you.
Godbless

A first-class relic is a saint’s body or piece of it, one of the instruments with which a martyr was tortured, or one of the instruments of the Passion or of the Cross.

A second-class relic is something the saint used during life, including clothes, personal possessions, and the like.

A third-class relic is something touched to a first- or second-class relic–or another third class relic.

Cluny:

Excuse me while my head spins!

Whatever class it is, I think the rule is to take very good care of it and to consider one’s self to be very blessed to have been given it.

Star Maiden, You’re quite blessed to have this relic. If you’re worried about the Class, ask your priest. and, NO, You don’t need to apologize for your ignorance. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable of the things of God, and I didn’t know this.

Remember, what’s important is that someone thought highly enough of you to give you something that belonged to a Doctor of the Church, and that Doctor of the Church is somehow present in your household in a very special way. That’s what the Council Fathers at the Council of Chalcedon said when they defined Icons and Relics to be worthy of veneration.

Your Brother in Christ, Michael

Here are the pictures, one is of the letter that came with the relic and the other is of the relic itself (sorry it’s a bit fuzzy).

Is this a 2nd class relic?
Perhaps you should start a thread asking for someone who can read Latin to read the letter and translate it for you. 🙂

You might attract a Latin scholar or two, or someone willing to put in the work with a dictionary and grammar who is bad at it.

Absolutely lovely relic. 🙂

Yes, a 2nd Class relic. As you note in your OP, the operative phrase of the testament is *ex indumentis *-- “from the clothing”. Sometimes 3rd Class relics are so labeled, but erroneously. (Such 3rd’s do not, in my experience, come with documentation)

(We have a similar relic and testification of St Elizabeth Ann Seton)

In our Cathedral we have a tiny fragment of St. Paul the Apostle. It’s really kind of spooky. I’m not much to use the word ‘feel’, but let me tell you… it was interesting. Probably my imagination reacting in whatever natural way the body reacts.

I touched my brown scapular to it for good measure.

I have a relic of Pope John Paul II but I have no idea if it is a 2nd class or 3rd class relic. I suspect it is a 3rd class relic. I learned online that you could request a relic from the Vatican and so I wrote the appropriate Vatican office a letter requesting one and received mine a few weeks later. 🙂

I tried to attach a picture of the letter that came with the relic, but I was unable to so I will try and type in what the wording is (Please be aware that I may make a few mistakes).

In quorum fidem has litteras manu nostra subscriptas sigilloque Postulationis munitas dedimus.

If anyone could translate this for me I would be very grateful 😃

I have a relic of JPII, it came with a letter that said (and this is the only bit of latin I know) ‘Of The Cloth’.
