I took five sips and said I can’t do this. Does this show that I don’t love Jesus enough? It tasted so bitter.

It’s ok, but the prayer is said best over things that you don’t want to do, but you have to do, like running errands, doing household chores, or even getting out of bed in the morning.

I though I had read that the Fatima visionaries spent all day creating “unnecessary” sacrifices because they wanted the conversion of sinners so badly. And the Exodus 90 program advocates quick cold showers and similar sacrifices.

@LiveSkype not to say those sacrifices you mentioned aren’t good

Why would that show that you ‘don’t love Jesus enough’?
Saying the Fatima sacrifice prayer and drinking your coffee black is an optional mortification.

If you don’t want to do it, then don’t do it.

Believe me, I know what it is like to get annoyed at yourself for the small things like this.

Try something else if you want to.

May the Lord be with you,

I say this prayer after the first drop when I’m riding a roller coaster because I’m scared to death. I guess that counts as an “unnecessary sacrifice”, considering I kinda don’t like riding roller coasters. 😁

Don’t be mad at yourself for failing to live up to a standard that you created for yourself: you’re not one of the Fatima visionaries. You’re you, and you can only do what you can do. If you can only do one sip, you can only do one sip.

But… but… but black coffee tastes like coffee. :coffee: 😋

For me, coffee with sugar would be a sacrifice. :coffee:😠

I think it is a mortification to drink coffee at all 🙂

Mortifications that I have used: empty the top of the dishwasher first, not eat between 3 and 4, not buy candy at the checkout line, no dessert, no seconds, no salt…

And we should also be offering up any sacrifices we must make: getting up for work, mopping the floor, listening to your lonely neighbor, and so on.

It is good tthat you want to add voluntary mortifications 🙂 Just pick those which are at your level (beginner for now 😉 )

No, it just means that black coffee tastes nasty to you.😋 It is awesome that you are making sacrifices for Our Lord. In my life, and I may be different, I have found it much more spiritually beneficial to focus on doing everyday things with great love. And to do things against my self-will besides food, like taking out the garbage, cleaning the bathroom, setting down my phone and talking to people, even and especially if it’s uncomfortable. I really recommend reading St. Therese’s book and following her “little way”.

I am sure if you told a spiritual director how much you dislike the bitter, black coffee, he/she would say “don’t drink it!”

“DrawNearToGod” You have gotten many good suggestions here!

Good coffee should be black. Mediocre coffee takes some cream. Life is too short for bad coffee.

Reminds me of what Mother Angelica told a caller who had given up coffee for Lent but complained about headaches or something like that and unable to function normally.

“So don’t give up coffee!”

Fatima is a private devotion, it is not a requirement.

Exodus 90, other than it is a new trend I know nothing about it. If it is causing you to doubt your love for Christ, I would say it is not spiritually healthy for you.

Find a Spiritual Director.

This type of question sounds like a question of scruples. Please talk with your priest about this. Any advice we give you might add to your anxiousness and distress
