The great irony: the cassock was originally just a wealthy man’s garment.
Exactly. Hiding in non-clerical clothes deprives us of an important witness. It seems as though we know that when we see the cassock we know that it represents and brings along with it some much more.
The priest that now wears a cassock does not celebrate the Extraordinary Form. The FSSP priests had a big influence on him, and now he wears the cassock. I know quite well that the FSSP only celebrate the Latin Mass.Don’t you mean the “Extraordinary Form”. The FSSP doesn’t celebrate the so called “Ordinary Form” of the Mass.
It also remind one of Who they represent. And they are “standing up” for their faith.I’ve seen them…and I remember them from pre-Vatican II changes. Seems alot of that went along with other changes. I don’t know how the priests/seminarians feel in cassocks but to me - there’s something so special - so reverent. Makes them stand out in a positive way.
God’s Penguins! On a related note i find nothing more striking then a Dominican in Full Habit with the Cappa![]()
Yeah, my Spiritual Director is a Dominican and I have to say it is rather priceless to see the look on the faces of people when we go out for Lunch or something and he goes full habitGod’s Penguins!
Seriously, the Dominican Friars, living in community but visible to the people, make a huge and striking impact with their devotion to both the Rosary and the Habit.
newliturgicalmovement.org/2006/05/brief-history-of-cassock.htmlOut of curiosity, what is the origin / history of the cassock? How was it derived and why did it become a priestly garment?
I’m sure few need reminding, but clerical garb is not necessarily a sign of orthodoxy or holiness. It might be nice to see priests wearing cassocks or nuns wearing habits, but a cassock can be a disquise as much as a sign of faith. There is a group of younger priests in my archdiocese who are wearing cassocks!!! Hoooray!!! Younger Catholics ARE turning to orthodoxy (laity, clergy, and religious!) The Holy Spirit is moving in the church!

You can say the same thing about street clothes…A cassock and a habit are powerful witnesses, that is why they are wornI’m sure few need reminding, but clerical garb is not necessarily a sign of orthodoxy or holiness. Thank you! This thread should be witness enough of that. Four pages of posts and only one comment that wasn’t incredibly positive. You can say the same thing about street clothes…A cassock and a habit are powerful witnesses, that is why they are worn
