So, kanzaz, are you well enough catechized that you can respond to the JW’s question, should he pose something like this, “You’re interested in being Catholic? Interesting. Don’t Catholics call priests “father”? Are you by chance familiar with this verse in Matthew that specifically says do NOT call anyone father?”

How would you respond?

Good Question & Thank God I read a lot …LOL

Read to them A Part from My Catholic Faith ( Questions & Answers ) Booklet which has this Exact Question along with The Answer to Why we Call Our Priest “Father” on Page 31 Of The Booklet & in the CCC 239 & Explain as much to them upon this Subject as possible & as Simple as I can .

They may also Ask me If God is One how can he Be God as well as The Father ? Also in The Booklet I have on page15 & in the CCC 237 .

Its always good to Receive free extra Booklets on Your Faith to better yourself I do read a lot of Our CCC & Bible but I have received Booklets from The Knights of Columbus Catholic Information Services I received like 2 Packages of Booklets all on What we as Catholics Believe , & Teaches & my Favorite book to read Is “FAITH” answers & questions Booklets .

I went to the JW Site & Signed up for Contacts So I can Get A Free Bible & Publications from them .

I’m not wanting to Join but I do have Family in that Cult & So I’m wanting to Read Their version of The Bible to see What’s in it , & to teach My Family What’s not in Their Bibles & what’s not True in their Bible .

I really Pray that One day God’s Children will wake up From This False Cult & Join GOD’s True Church .

I’m not wanting to Convert My Family But I do Pray that I can talk & make them see that JW’s Teachings & Doctrines & Cult is nothing but Just that A False Cult .
JL: I think it’s good to know what they teach and defend the faith. Teaching your children their errors is also wise.

Ok Had time to Read some of their Stuff & I got A little upset Of what they try to say about the “TRINITY” called it False & its not in the Bible & stuff .

What i’m not Understanding is Why? do they Write about Catholics in A Bad way Trying to Call Us & Other Christian Religion’s False , I’m like OK you don’t see any other Religion Writing about Jehovah Witness Or do any other Religion Bother to mention them …LOL so why are they spending & wasting Ink on Us & Others who don’t give A Rats Butt about them .

I Also Was Confused upon Them Saying they Teach to Love everyone & the world , OK If you Love everyone Why? are you Shunning Family members & people & why are you Shunning the World ???. That’s not Love God never said Shun your Friend , & Neighbor . even though there is Excommunication in the bible .

I Do However agree with The Life & Pro-life & None Abortion I do Agree with that

But everything else seems Confusing & A Bunch of Bull if you ask me Seriously .

I Read their Booklet "What the Bible Really Teaches ? "

After Reading their **** I had to Go & get A Dose of EWTN & Read Our own Bible & My Copy of "Cathechism Explained " Which is Very Good in getting A Full Meal of The Catholic Doctrine & teaching along with the “Cathechism Of the Catholic Church” & I Read “TRINITY” sections Of Both Books & Said Jehovah Witnesses Are Messing big part of God & meaning of his Words .

Their Holy Scripture has 66 Books in it I guess the Wrote Extra Books …LOL Now I’m Curious even More & may go to A Bible meeting Just to Get more insight & Books .

Kanzaz: I started out studying LDS about 1979 or 1980 for several years, then New age for several years - New Age had tripped up many people in our diocese - take my word for it. Then studied JW for about 8-9 years now.

Problem is K: THIS STUFF IS TOXIC :hypno: You MUST put in far more time into Rosary, Mass, Meditation, Good Cath reading, Catholic Answers Radio, EWTN Radio, Podcasts to counterbalance this poison. TRUST ME, BEEN THERE. I have personally been thrown off balance at times but Masses & Rosaries & study good solid materials help to me upright myself. I had a dear friend, a sister who left the convent to start a new order who taught me a great deal about spirituality. She said “don’t bring heresy/apostate junk into your house. Have a priest come over & bless your home. Spirits are attached to this stuff, so BE CAREFUL”

Use the Sacramentals: Blessed Crucifixes, Salt, Holy Water & have pictures of Our Lord and Our Lady, Statues to look at at remind you WHO you love and WHO is really in control 👍

I would be careful because Jehovah Witnesses are trained to trick people into believing in what they believe in. I would stay away.

If you continue on with a “study” with a JW and their materials then the biggest thing you need to do besides prayer and taking in of the sacraments is to learn about Catholicism. The JW’s claim to be “sola scriptura,” and that their beliefs ONLY come from the inspired scriptures known as the Bible; this is not true. Many of their beliefs come from information that is not found inside the Bible; it is their own man-made tradition that came about over the past 140 years.

I would recommend going to scripturecatholic.com/ and learn about the beliefs of our faith. This site offers the biblical occurrences of our beliefs, along with the beliefs of the early Church who just so happen to believe the same thing that we believe today 🙂

Our Sacred Tradition was passed on orally to new disciples the moment the apostles began spreading the Gospel. Several of these new disciples became leaders in the new Church spreading across the land, and many of these people wrote down what they were taught. Many of these people died for what they believed; they were Martyr’d for their beliefs about God, about Christ (Divinity, Present in the Eucharist, etc…) This is the light that we were supposed to use to help us understand God as he was revealed to man through tradition passed on orally, and also the written tradition in the scriptures. The Catholic Church (the Magesterium) has had the light ever since the early Church began, but unfortunately man made religions choose to use the light inside their own mind and body to discern the truth; this was not God’s intention.

This morning the first thing I did was Grab my Catholic books & started reading them …LOL & did A Prayer .

The Thing I love about Catholicism & Catholic is that reading the Material is almost like reading into History its like there’s so much to learn that one can’t possibly learn everything in 1 Day its like going & getting A Full History lesson But its about Catholic Faith & The Church . I do not feel that way about Jehovah Witness its like something is totally missing from their Teachings that one could easily be mislead i personally would prefer For anyone to Convert to Catholic cause its Amazing to read & learn & I still stay Firm in my Beliefs that the Catholic Church is the one for me .

Kanzaz

Early 20’s started studying with a young adult bible study group at our local Catholic Church. That lasted two years or so. Then I met a couple showing Rosary slides that got me into a Holy Hour group I’ve known for over 30 years. They still have the First Friday devotions going 40 years now. We did Marian Cenacle Masses at least one Friday night a month from one end of the diocese to the other. Then met a Catholic bookstore owner who said come join my young adult study group at the local Jesuit University. Spent several years there on one Thursday night a month working on projects & learning a lot of Theology (for free) with many of the Jesuits sitting in. Then started Choir & spent 25 years + doing that (she who sings, prays twice 😃 )

This all got dumped into my lab. So amazing and I would never trade it for anything. But ya gotta put your time in on your knees & with a nose in a book. My loving, wise, holy hour group was so on fire & had literally HUNDREDS of books to read so we spent years and years talking. 4 of them are in their 80’s now & one in her 70’s. They are among the heroes of my life. :heaven:

The Lord provided me with the Sister as a mentor for several years after I moved away. Pray to find a group of on fire Catholics locally that can help support you and guide you. That support was vital for me & kept me balanced. :grouphug:

Hi Kanzaz,

First of all, thank you for caring about the grave error your JW relatives are suffering under. Like you, I have JW family whom I pray for and with whom I gently discuss their cultic beliefs. It is extremely important for you to know that their theology is not Christian, even though they claim it to be. JWs do not believe that Jesus is the 2nd person of the Trinity; they believe he is not the Incarnation. They claim he is a created being, specifically an angel. Although many will not admit it to a non-JW, they believe Jesus is St. Michael in a human disguise. So, you need to be aware of that heresy when you are talking to them. The JW cult is a modern recurrence of the old Arian heresy, so it isn’t a new idea. Educate yourself about Arianism before you try to help them see where their thinking has gone off track.

In my experience, you will never make any headway by discussing any NT Scriptures with them. They use their own scriptures and claim the Catholic Church has falsified the Gospel. However, they do follow the OT more closely (although they clearly don’t understand Hebrew). My own approach has been to constantly, cheerfully refer my relatives to Isaiah 9:6. Instead of trying to teach them what the OT says about the Trinity and who Jesus is, I simply ask: “What do you think this verse means?”. Because it is an explicit statement that the child to be born of a Virgin (which they accept is Jesus) is also “the Almighty God” and “the Eternal Father”, both of whom they acknowledge as YHWH. Therefore, the OT clearly, explicitly states that Jesus of Nazareth is the same as YHWH. The Holy Spirit will do the rest. I send all of my JW relatives a Christmas card with this verse on it. When they begin to condemn the Church for teaching the Trinity, I ask them about this verse. They can’t answer it with their doctrine. So, the cognitive dissonance provides an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to break through the brainwashing to introduce doubt.

I hope this helps. I’ll be praying for your efforts and your family. May the Lord bless you for caring enough to try to help them hear the Good News.

They will tell you that the word in Isiah 9:6 is Mighty God and there is a difference between almighty and mighty God. Almighty God is God the father and mighty is Jesus the little God so in reality the JWs believe in 2 gods but they will never admit that.

You may be correct, but I have never heard any JW (or read any of their literature) that asserted that Jesus is “Mighty God” or any sort of deity at all. Their belief system is based entirely on an assertion that the Trinity must be false because there is only one God, and that he is the Eternal Father, Creator, Yahweh, etc. I’ll agree with you that it is a form of brainwashing that is particularly difficult to undo. They have devised myriad, slippery ways of ignoring or explaining away Scripture. But Isaiah 9:6 seems to confront many with clear, explicit, inescapable statements about the nature of Jesus that does not square with their claim that he is a created being. I tend to agree with Kanzaz that it’s worth the effort to try to reach those lost in this delusion.

They’re right about some things, wrong about others, like everyone else. Encourage them when they’re right, inform them when they’re wrong. Truth is Truth, regardless of the source, seek the Truth, because the Truth is Jesus. 🙂
