I think there is more issues other than, I’m speak in tongues in my sleep, going on here.

Pray to St. Michael, and Pray for deliverance from what ever evil is attacking you.

Check out…saint-mike.org/spcdc/resources.asp for prayers.

Also, I advise you to speak to your Priest, go to Confession and receive the Eucharist as soon as possible.

 **Far be it from me to try and interpret what is going on but I agree with the poster advising you to talk to your priest and I will add ASAP!

You do NOT know you were speaking in tongues. Only the Church can discern this.

Are you saying that he was not speaking in toungs or because he was asleep he wouldn’t know if he was speaking in toungs, or ether way only the church can tell you if you are speaking in toungs???

God bless

First, let me say that I believe all “tongues” speaking when it is “gibberish” is fake and is not supported by Paul in Corinthians. I believe speaking in tongues is the ability to speak in a real foreign language that you did not know before.
However, even if the gibberish tongues is real only the Church can discern such a thing. I have been to charismatic meetings with dozens of people claiming to speak gibberish tongues and they say they don’t need the Church to tell them anything. What arrogance.
So to answer your question its nothing to do with the OP being asleep. Only the Church can discern if a person has such a gift.

if you are having dreams and psychological experiences that are disturbing you in your waking life, see a psychologist for counselling. If you are having what you feel are spiritual experiences that are disturbing, take them to your priest in confession or your spiritual director for discernment. You are not likely to get competent help from strangers who know nothing about you.

Please take this as a friendly ribbing, but it seems like you are posting in tongues as well. 😃

The gift of tongues, example as those given to the apostles on Pentecose, has a purpose; they could spread the gospel by speaking in a tongue unintelligable to themselves but UNDERSTOOD by others. Now to me speaking in some gibberish that is intelligible to no one is not the gift of tongues from the Holy Spirit!

I totally agree.

:hmmm: Wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the idea of tongues if I were you.

St Paul speaks of the gifts both of a) speaking in tongues and b)interpretation of tongues. If ‘tongues’ only ever refers to a human language then why is the interpretation a special gift of the Holy Spirit if it’s no different from normal human skills of translation???

Then again, St Paul also speaks of being able to speak with ‘the tongues both of men and of angels’. Obviously here he is referring to speaking something OTHER than human tongues!

We will have to agree to disagree on this.

Interpretation does mean translation and it is a gift if the person could not do it before.

God works mysterious way. Even now, I don’t understand anything about this topic, and I am reluctant to ask for the gift; however, I once asked for it. It did happened to me for 3 days. My life has been changing since.

Therefore, when I see someone is so against this matter, I thought “wow, if I had not been to the retreat, I would have never known more about myself”. On the other hand, if I don’t learn from those who are careful not to use this gift, I say to myself “how prideful would I have become if I used what I had been given in the wrong way”.

Being zealous and prudent are something I have learned and am still learning from this expereince.

But translation of human tongues is still very much a human ability, not a supernatural one, albeit one some people have to an unusual degree.

There are math geniuses, including autistic/idiot savants (remember the movie ‘Rain Man’?) who can add/subtract/multiply any amount of numbers dozens of digits long entirely without pen, paper or calculator, or perform similarly staggering feats of memory and calculation.

Some can do so as quickly as any calculator, some almost before all the numbers involved are fully read out to them. Problems that they certainly haven’t heard before. Freakish abilities indeed, but nothing to do with the Holy Spirit.

No doubt there are people who naturally posess similar abilities with language, perhaps being far more sensitive than most to the body language of the people speaking, and thus picking up cues as to their meaning (since the vast majority of all communication is NOT verbal). Or perhaps even actually possessed of mental telepathy. Again, a freakish, even paranormal, ability but not necessarily a gift of the Holy Spirit.

So the question remains - why does Paul refer to the ability to speak the angels’ language, treat this ability as a very real one, and distinguish it from the ability to speak ordinary human languages, if tongues is only to be taken as referring to such ordinary human language?

Allow me to illustrate. There are math geniuses, including autistic/idiot savants (remember the movie ‘Rain Man’?) who can add/subtract/multiply any amount of numbers dozens of digits long entirely without pen, paper or calculator, or perform similarly staggering feats of memory and calculation, such as memorising sequences of playing cards.

Some can do so as quickly as any calculator and with photographic speed and accuracy, some almost before all the numbers involved are fully read out to them or the cards all shown. Problems, sequences of numbers and cards and such that they certainly haven’t seen or heard before. Freakish abilities indeed, but nothing to do with the Holy Spirit.

Show me the Church teaching that says I must believe in gibberish tongues.
