Hi,

Last friday night, I was praying the rosary and I was really sleepy. Then, I realized I prayed the 2nd sorrowful mystery on the 3rd decade. I totally messed up. I just finished it and asked pardon to God for what I did and that I couldn’t finish the remaining decades and went to sleep. I promised to pray it the next morning and I did finish it the next day.

Did I commit a sin for messing up with the decades of the rosary and not finishing it?

Of course not. There are no hard and fast rules about praying. Just keep praying any way that suits you

No, you were sleepy, it happens.
My mother always said when you fall asleep praying the rosary, the angels finish it for you.
I reckon she kept a few angels very busy because towards the end of her life she always fell asleep saying the rosary.
Be at peace.

I do the same thing sometimes but more often I fall asleep reading Scripture and wake up and find myself reading the same paragraph over and over.

The rosary makes me very sleepy if I pray it alone or super stressed if prayed with a group, so a priest told me to go for a walk to meditate on the mysteries instead of saying all the Hail Marys etc. I think it has to do with how I first encountered the rosary. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I might pray the rosary till I fall asleep.

Those confessors who ask me to pray a decade of the rosary for penance sure give me a penance…

Sometimes I pray the rosary when I am tired and I wake up with my hands on two or three decades earlier.

No. There’s no sin in this. You’re not required to pray the rosary in the first place, and there are no rules for how much you have to pray if you do.

I’ve heard of people who will pray just one decade, if they’re in a hurry or have other things they need to do, or if they just want to pray a little bit right then. They’re not sinning. Nor did you. 😃

Saint Padre Pio said if he had to restart the Rosary every time he got distracted and could not finish it he would never be able to complete a Rosary.

I have heard - through the grape vine - that one’s guardian angel -
finishes the rosary - if you fall asleep 😇

You know you don’t have to pray the rosary in the first place, right? It’s completely optional. Some people never do, and they’re not sinning.

That’s discouraging in a way.
Here is someone who does say the Rosary and by what they’ve said want to say it as well as they can.God blessBBM.

St. Therese of Lisieux used to fall asleep at prayer time occasionally, and she said that the Lord loves her just as much when she is asleep as when she is awake.

What conrfidence in the Lord’s love! And that is so true.

Hell no! How could it possible be a sin. You are human. God made you so. You are not perfect, stop trying to be. Do the best you can!

Would you rather fall asleep taking drugs, or watching porn, or texting gossip, or worrying about your troubles, or etc… ? 🙂

Thanks all for your thoughts! 😇 I’m just worried coz this is my daily devotion and I just felt bad failing to finish the Holy Rosary.

I’m not trying to discourage her from praying the rosary. By all means, do. But if something is optional to begin with, not finishing it is obviously not a sin, since you weren’t obligated to even begin.

Hi. I am not sure if it is sinful The point is, is that you are praying it. To devote time to and with the Holy Mother is an essential part of Catholic life; otherwise, Jesus would not have said so, from His Cross.
None of that means the rosary is mandatory. Plenty of ways to honor Mary besides the rosary.

Again, not saying the rosary isn’t a great habit. It is. But the point is that it’s optional, so saying only part of it is not sinful.

It’s like saying, “did I sin for not going to weekday mass, when it’s not a holy day of obligation?” Of course not. Its optional. That isn’t to say that going to daily mass isn’t a good thing; it is. Just that not doing it isn’t a sin.

If it becomes a habit, just try to say the Rosary at a different time of day when you are more awake. I try not to read Scripture after a certain hour because I would like to stay awake to finish the full half hour for the indulgence.

If it’s just an occasional thing, i wouldn’t worry about it.

I usually pray it first thing in the morning when I wake up. But that time I woke up late so I prayed it at night before going to bed.
