I am staying with my aunt and uncle right now. Hubby is deployed again and with me battling mental illness he and the rest of the family decided that I shouldn’t be alone. My aunt and uncle have 2 little boys. One being 4 years old. They are a strict Southern Baptist family, they don’t bother me about me being Catholic. They have actually have learned that they lean, on some subjects, more Catholic thinking than Baptist. It has been a learning experience me being here. The adults aren’t the ones who I think may be converting…My 4 year old cousin is. 😃

I am open about my faith and he is a very interested little boy. Just the other week we were at the grocery store, going down the candle aisle. He sees a “Jesus candle” that he just HAD to have. My aunt didn’t know why Jesus was on said candle and didn’t know the prayer on it. I let her know that I knew the prayer and the photo. It was the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Since I approved of the candle, he was allowed to get it. lol.

Last night, I was praying the Rosary when I heard my bedroom door open. I told him that I was praying and to get back in bed. Well, not two minutes later I hear him again at my door and he had this mesmerizing look on him face. He asked if he could pray with me. I told him to come on in. He had a few questions for me. He asked if I prayed “every single night.” I told him that I did. He asked me what I was holding and I told him. He asked me if I wore it as a necklace because it was very pretty. lol.
He sat and watched me pray about a decade. He said, “I’m coming back, I’m going to tell mom I’m sleeping with you tonight.”
He never came back. His mom told him to stop bothering me when I pray and to go back to bed. I talked to her about it this morning because I didn’t want her upset that her child was doing something out of her comfort zone. She isn’t upset.
Anyway, I had to share about the little boy who is so amazed and open to the Catholic faith.

How awesome. 👍

I am amazed at the questions my son asks about the faith, and how much he likes to pray, read picture Bibles and books about the saints, going to church, etc. It’s great that your cousin has someone he can ask questions, and that his mom is cool with it.

I remember even when I was very young I wanted to know more about religion, but really had no one to ask. I’d read stories where the children would say prayers and go to church, but we never did. I’d try praying by myself, but gave it up when my siblings made fun of me or when my parents said “we weren’t that kind of family.” Then I kind of forgot about it until I was much older.

Sounds like you’re doing some very good work!

How would you feel if it was your child learning about another faith from an aunt with different religious beliefs? Children are curious about what is different. The rosary was shiny and interesting to him. I suggest you keep your Catholic prayers to yourself and let his parents teach him about their faith. You would definitely be writing a different kind of letter here if you thought an aunt was leading your child astray.

You will, of course, note from the OP that the mom has been fine with everything, and that the OP has made sure to check that the mom is fine with it.

I’m actually the cousin, not the aunt.
Again, I have been open with my aunt and uncle.
He didn’t even see the shiny object in my hand until he was sitting next to me. I don’t wave my rosary around while praying. lol. He is a very spiritual child. When his great grandmother was dying, he said that Jesus came to visit him and that Jesus comforted him about her death. Ever since then, anything to do with religion/praying/images of Christ has interested him.
I’m not able to have children, but if I was they would have different influences via family because I am a convert and the vast majority of my family are protestants. I don’t think that my protestant family are evil people who would lead my imaginary children astray. Heck, when it comes to religion of 4 years olds, Christianity is pretty simple, no matter what denomination you are.
Like I said in the OP, I talked to my aunt this morning because I was worried that him praying with me might have upset her. It totally wasn’t a big deal. She actually apologized because her son interrupted me.

I think the OP handled it quite well. You have to remember, this is a Catholic site. She’s going to get encouragement, especially when she handles a situation like this with grace and charity. Her relatives are not at all threatened. I don’t really understand why you should be. I think she is showing a great deal of respect for her family’s beliefs. And they are respecting hers in turn. You can’t put the Holy Spirit in a cage, no matter how uncomfortable it may seem to you.
