I think I scared my Priest

Well, I know I’m not really suppose to be talking about things that are involved with the sacraments of confession, but I really think I need to say something. Not of what happened in the confession, but of something I said during the confession. Is it alright for a priest to get scared of someone for something they said? My priest just grew kinda distant.

I don’t think being in confession changes the fact that some things are scary when said. Scary things are scary things regardless of if saying them is in confession or not.

It seems that you were perhaps at least a bit taken aback by his reaction. Were you not expecting it?

Not one bit. I figured Priests had these sorts of things happen to them all the time. When someone tells them these things, or even worst and then they forgive the person, tell to do 60 Hail Mary’s, pray an intercession and then do better. (Kinda like several Saints I could name).

Perhaps it would help to say what you said? Or not. I dunno.

Unfortunately without hearing more it’s hard to say really. We don’t really know the story. Having said that it’s important you keep that information to yourself. Whatever happened in confession is for you, your Priest and the Lord. I would just ask your Priest directly, as awkward as it may be, for whatever you were concerned about with scaring him? I imagine Priests hear just about anything you can imagine throughout their lives in the confessional. It could be something else was causing him to be distracted or distant. But like I said, you’ll never know if you don’t ask him directly. Maybe ask Christ first to give you the grace to approach your Priest charitably and learn the truth for yourself, if you are truly troubled by it. God Bless friend!

Be sure to bring this up in confession- not out. You should restate what it was that you told him (in there- not here, or anywhere outside of confession), and apologize if you gave too much detail. Everyone has their eccentricities. I’m sure my confessors have made their share of strange faces after they’ve heard what I’ve had to say. That being said, priests are human- and they have spiritual and emotional battles of their own to fight- his reaction might be a sign that he is not the right person to help you, and you need to find someone else.

I doubt you scared him --he’s probably heard worse in confession. But I agree with the poster who said bring it up in confession. Then you’ll know for sure 🙂

Please don’t worry it is very hard to scare a priest, because he has heard it all before. There is nothing new under the sun. But even if you did manage to scare him, as long as you were truely sorry for the sins you confessed the absolution(as long as said properly) was valid.

If you are rather worried about it I would speak to the priest about it, probably in confession the next time you go.

God Bless

Hi,
I wouldn’t worry about it too much. You said what you needed to. He listened. He’s a big boy, and it goes along with the territory…I thought about similar moments, and I thought maybe you should consider this:

Priests really do hear it all. And they probably go on autopilot intermittently, when they think they have a conversation pegged- already thinking of the next thing. Maybe you didn’t so much “scare” him as put an unpredicted twist in the conversation. It might not have been what he pegged it to be, and he might have been a little alarmed to hear that it was going down a road he had not planned on.🤷

At any rate, you fulfilled your responsibility by confessing it. He’s fine. It’s a big, big job they have these days (in all times, I guess).

Have a nice Advent season.

I would go speak with the priest again, but since the Traditional Latin Mass he does is only once a month, it might take me till next month to see him again. 😦

I guess I’ll just deal with it.

Don’t “just deal with it” if it’s really bothering you.

You know you can speak of things that went on in confession outside of the confessional, if you the penetant, choose to do so. If you were to bring it up with Father at another time and you discussed it with him out side of confession that would be OK to do so. Stop by the Parish House/office or drop him a-line (not sure exactly how you go about it outside of Britain and Ireland but you can)

That would be fine, IF he had an office. But he doesn’t. He’s more of a…traveling priest? Does a tridentine mass here, then does a tridentine mass there. He never stays in one place to do the mass, which is why I said that the masses he conducts are a once a month thing.

I agree with this sentiment.

On the flip side though; I’ve talked to some priests who have an incredible gift where they literally forget what was confessed previously. They might remember “someone confessed this thing once”, but they don’t remember who. If this priest has that gift, he might not even remember his reaction. And it could explain his reaction was the way it was, he may have heard it before but simply due to the grace of God have forgotten it.

What a great gift that is though, when you think about it. Hearing confessions for how many years, the sins of so many people, there could be a danger of a lot of cynicism.

My understanding is that the priest must keep whatever you have said confidential, but there is nothing stopping you from talking about it. 🤷

We also seem to think that priests have heard it all. But really, how many Jeffery Dalmers are there in the world? If he had gone to Confession, do you think his priest would have heard it all before? I bet not.

I do not believe that is correct. The penetant cannot give the Priest permission to break the seal, and even acknowleding it would be a violation (as in “Hey Father, do you remember when I was in confession with you last week?” Father’s reply would be “no”)

I believe this is why m134e5 rightly suggested this be discussed in the confessional under the seal.

Let me ask this.

If what you said did scare your priest what would be the purpose to bring it up again?

If it was a sin, it was absolved. The only reason to bring it up again in confession is if you commit the sin again.

Is it just that the reaction of this priest is bothering you? How should the priest have reacted?

Might this be something that you should consider getting a regular spiritual director to work on?

What he means is that the penitent can go confess, say, slapping his mom, and then go tell his friend about the same thing later.

No, Theophorus is correct. The seal only binds the priest and any other person involved (like an interpreter). The penitent is not bound by such. If the penitent brings it up out side of the confessional the priest may speak about it.

The penitent can not give permission for the priest to talk about it, but by actually bringing it up himself it is different than just giving permission. The priest still will not discuss what happened in the confessional but he can talk about the issue.

He can also talk to the priest who heard his confession about this out side of the confessional.
