talk to me. Where does their theology differ from the Roman perspective? Any Melkites here willing to comment? Maybe I’ll change my mind if I can find a Tridentine Mass to attend. I guess I’m just searching for a more traditional Mass/Divine Liturgy.

What do you know about the Melkites? What has prompted this desire to become a Melkite Catholic?

You do know that you can attend any Catholic church to fulfill your ‘Sunday obligation,’ right? It doesn’t involve switching rites or anything. You could just go to your Melkite parish this Sunday, and that is that.

Ghosty is a very knowledgable Catholic. You may be familiar with his posts here. While many of the Orthodox posters on these boards claim that our theologies are incompatible, he can defend quite ably the complementarity of the Western and Eastern approaches to theology. I’d recommend seeing if you can find posts by Ghosty, or ask him about it. He’s schooled well both in Dominican theology and Eastern theology.

Hi, I am a Melkite Greek Catholic priest. First know that Latin Rite Catholics believe the same Truths as Eastern Catholics. We love and pray for our holy Father Benedict. We have seven sacraments that we call Mysteries. We celebrate holy days and saints’ days.

We are different in how we see these Truths. e.g. There is a Church in Jerusalem containing tradition says the tomb of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The West calls this church the Church of the Holy Sepulcher; the East, the Church of the Resurrection. Just a different view, one going in the other coming out. Who is right? As you know both are correct it simply depends of your vision and approach to our belief. Orthodox literature is good for explaining our approach except for the role of the papacy. You can get information also from the various Eastern Eparchies(dioceses). Check the web for Melkite sites.

I am a very happy, cradle Melkite Catholic. Although I make it a point to periodically attend Latin Rite Masses, I regularly attend Mass in my own, Melkite Rite Catholic church.

I recommend that, if possible, you attend a Melkite Rite Mass.

My understanding is that we are doctrinally identical with regard to infallible Church teaching, and there may be some differences in non-infallible Church teaching.

Although we are similar to the Orthodox in many ways, we are in communion with the Pope. We have a Vatican flag in my church, and I have one in my house as well, just to make it clear where I stand.
