I think I'm scrupulous

I have a son that struggles with this. One thing I had him do is read the catechism’s descriptions of sin and obey it faithfully. I think one issue is to ask God to help you see yourself as he does. Scrupulosity can be sometimes viewed as self-hatred. We must remember that we are commanded by God to love ourselves.
It is a tremendously freeing experience to feel God’s love. Ask Him to help you in experiencing that. I also believe that this concern about sin can be a grace from God. It can also be a device of Satan to drive a person into despair. When it seems like a compulsion, rebuke Satan and remind yourself that you are created in the image and likeness of God and that God does not create junk. You can also use it as a reminder to pray for others. If indeed Satan is attacking you, he will tire of the game when you turn the issue into an opportunity for grace in another’s life.

Ryan,
Definitely get help if you believe you have this problem. I am scrupulous, and it is devastating. Most actions that I take during a day, I consider to be a sin(or could lead up to a sin) and unfortunately it is causing me to rebel against God and blame people around me for things that are not their fault. I’m pretty sure it grows over time(in my estimation), so nip it in the bud.

Mike, me too. Its hard just getting through the day. I pray a Novena every night for a cure.

you would benefit greatly from instruction from the spiritual masters, especially the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius. you may look for someone to direct you in this, which is ideal simply because you may fall into abuses and distortions, especially if you get bogged down on the second week. there are a number of at-home retreats based on the SE, but you should have direction, or at least tell your confessor what your are doing. one of the best is “For the Greater Honor and Glory of God” a spiritual retreat with St. Ignatius by Word among Us Press at www.wordamongus.org

Hey John,
I’m sorry to hear you suffer with it too, although it’s always nice to know you’re not alone. Maybe I should try a Novena like you’re doing. Also found the saint to pray to…Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. God bless.

I find myself that even after confession I have an overwhelming sense of shame and guilt. I have even remained focused on my confessed sins. I don’t think it is shame of ‘what would people think if they knew’. I am not exactly sure of what it is. I have to really pray and make an effort to get beyond this feeling of despair – despair of God’s grace, which can be a mortal sin itself if it gets out of hand.

Pray and trust in God. Jezu ufam Tobie.

Yes. Alphonsus da Liguori is one of my favourite Saints - he suffered from scrupulosity tremendously. I limit confession to once a month as advised by Fr. Bob Levis off EWTN.

another suggestion is don’t type in all capitals - it looks like you’re angry and yelling at us.

You know…I keep hearing that about caps, and know that to use caps means that you are “shouting”. But, I think most people use caps for emphasis. I know that is how I use them. I use caps when I want to make a point, or emphasize a word or thought. I don’t think this person was shouting at all…I think he was saying HELP!

For me, it is ok if you can’t take away your confessed sin in your mind, but what important is, you truely take away your sin in your heart and you have faith that it is forgiven, and do your very best not to do it again. For me scrupulousity is when you feel your too holy and all the things around you are sinful.

Sometimes I worry about whether I said certain prayers that I try to say each day. When you begin to get old you forget such things. I ask my angel to finish them if I did not.

May God bless you for your faith,
Deacon Tony SFO
