I am 14 years old, and I feel called to be a lay religion teacher, spending my life teaching Catholic children about their faith, as well as a Catholic apologist, though the teaching would be my primary goal. I feel I must help pull people out of the deadly snares of ignorance. Any advice, thoughts?

Teaching is a great thing! Don’t forget to pray; try praying to St. John Viennie for help in discerning what you are called in life to do. Then… do it! If God wants you some place else, He’ll pull you to it. And, obviously, we all know that to get to Carnigie Hall one must practice a lot; the same goes for apologetics.

Hey metalmark,

That sounds like a great career you have planned as a schoolteacher. People young and old definitely need to be pulled out of ignorance, and the younger, the better. To be a great teacher and apologist, you’ll want to start living a balanced life now.

**Physically **getting plenty of exercise and sleep, and **eating properly **
**Mentally **filling your mind with great truths
**Emotionally **by cultivating great **friendships **(like on CAForums!)
**Spiritually **through **prayer **and the Sacraments.

All of this will definitely help you to make the decisions you need to make in order to reach your destination and your destiny, transforming union with God and contemplata aliis tradere… (= handing on to others what you’ve contemplated).

Hi MetalMark,

Teachers have such an opportunity to change lives, my best friend is one and I hear stories all the time about how she or one of her colleagues have had such an impact on their students future. It’s a huge responsibility and honor. I like that you have identified that you want to be a religion teacher and apologist. You sound like you want to know your stuff, which is so important. Your mission is also very inspiring. The world is certainly in need of good religion teachers. I grew up going to Catholic schools and unfortunately don’t have many memorable religion teachers. I used to call religion class in highschool “cut & paste” class. I don’t remember the actual content the teachers taught but obviously they weren’t too successful at getting through to kids at the age group they were instructing. If I were called to be a religion teacher I would put a lot of thought into that aspect. How to get the message across to effectively to the students.

I wish you the best Mark and may God Bless your journey.

Teresa

Thank you all for the support. 🙂
I have suffered under poor religion education at my school, in fact if it weren’t for my family and the internet (Including this website), I doubt I would really know anything about my faith.

Religion education is in such an abysmal state that it is leading to severe confusion at best (not that it is in the least bit good) and apostasy at worst (which, unfortunately, seems to be the more common).

That’s great you feel you are being called to be a lay religion teacher. I am a sophomore in college studying Theology so I can be a religion teacher when I graduate. Then enter religious life eventually! 👍
