There are chiropractors that claim they can cure almost anything.

I met one that talked about curing cancer and auto-immune diseases.
Oh boo.

No chiropractor for me, then. Besides, I’m always afraid they may break my neck. Seriously.

but I feel like we have an open relationship much more than my mother and I did…
It may be that you are hurt that your mom and you did not have an open relationship and you therefor want to make up for it by being too close to your daughter. Nonetheless, even in close mother-daughter relationships, sex is not discussed on a personal level. it just is not healthy IMO

She’s an adult so her sex life is really nothing to do with you. If she’s having sex then that is her choice and (right or wrong) she has the right to make her own choices.

She needs the pill for medical reasons and it would be unfair to argue with her about taking it.

See, here’s the thing with college students. They think they are independent and adults, but every summer they come home or have to have other arrangements for living, and most aren’t financially solvent, so mom and dad are still involved.

The “mind your own business” stuff is half right. Yes, you have to give your kids space. BUT, because we have to pick up the pieces when things go wrong, there is a certain leeway we need to be given.

Not reading mail, but if I’m funding your lifestyle I get a certain amount of right to comment.

Yes. I had a friend in college who was dating a young man who was abusive and other things as well and her parents who funded her education and let her live at home said
“NO MORE”. Continue with him and you will have to move out and pay your own college tuition.

She chose the latter and today she is married to a wonderful Catholic man and teaches in a Catholic school. I believe their decision spared her from what may have been a total disaster of a situation.

Mary.

That kind of ultimatum really has the potential to go badly. I never would have forgiven my parents for trying to control me like that. I probably would have finished college, packed my bags and never spoken to them again.

My brother is a chiropractor and I can assure you that heavy and painful periods can, generally speaking, be relieved through evidence-based chiropractic treatment (not the cosmic energy quackery that a small number of chiropractors get caught up in). Chiropractic care is more than spinal adjustments to relieve back pain. The spine and nervous system affect your entire body, including periods. If something is out of alignment it can affect things you wouldn’t imagine. I wouldn’t write off chiropractic care because you don’t understand it and have an irrational fear of your neck being broken. Chiropractors are doctors and to be legally allowed to practice in North America they have to undergo extensive education, board exams, etc. My brother’s malpractice insurance premium is a fraction of that of family medical doctors because chiropractic is so low risk, but hey, if you want to be taking pills for everything, feel free to.

You cannot control your daughter. Even if she lives with you she is still an adult. So now you can only pray for her.

She was actually grateful that they did as such down the line. She deserved so much more than an abusive type man with many other issues.

You are right though, every situation is different.

Mary.

I don’t know the U.S. situation which Chiros, but in my experience, while they may get to call themselves Dr., the training is vastly different. Much of the traditional medical profession regard them as “outside the tent”. Having said that, I use an Osteopath (similar to chiro) from time to time.

The eyeroll and condescending tone is really not needed.

This whole gyne thing is getting blown out of proportion. I only went due to it being her first time and when she got the pill at school, she was not even examined at all. I only wanted her to go to become familiar with what it’s all about for her own health and to make sure the doctor had her full health history.
I think that, because you framed it differently in your original post (“I made her go to my gyne when she got home from school this summer still professing her virginity”) and not “I was concerned about her health so I suggested she have an exam”, that is what posters reacted to. Saying you “made” her go, and in the context of badgering her about whether she was a virgin, made it sound like she had no choice. Gynecological exams used to be very painful and stressful for me, and I went on my own, so I can’t imagine how much worse it would have been if I were forced to go.

To be a licensed Chiropractor in the State of Oregon, Chiropractors are required to be able to deliver babies, perform minor surgeries, as well as other medical skills. Some medical doctors don’t like Chiropractors. Many chiropractors don’t like medical doctors because they pump patients full of pain killers and drugs without second thought.

Some medical doctors don’t like chiropractors because they don’t understand their limitations or how dangerous some of their procedures are, particularly on infants.

Chiropractic care is regarded as negligent at best, and dangerous at worst. Calling a chiropractor to the stand in court is one of the fastest ways to have your medical lawsuit blown to bits by the opposing counsel. They just aren’t respected in the medical community and there really is no scientific backing for what they do. Most hospitals have strict rules against having them on staff.

Please stay on topic and cease any conversation about chiropractors. Thank you.

I’m sorry that your daughter might be straying from the right path 😦 That must be such a heavy cross for you, and even more so since you can’t really discuss it with her. (((hugs))) I just wanted to let you know that it’s morally acceptable for her to be on birth control pills for the purpose of regulating her cycles. It would still be morally permissible if she were married. The contraceptive effect in this case is the side effect and not the main intention, so it is not sinful to use it in this way. There are other health concerns, though, as others mentioned, blood clots leading to stroke, heart attack or respiratory distress. Not an option I would want to consider! Anyway, some of the posts seemed a little confusing on the Church’s stance on the pill, so I thought I would try and clarify.

Prayers for your daughter and for peace for you.

Look I think now that you know what she’s up to it’s now time to no longer talk about how cool you think virginity is. Instead it might be a better time to mention things like how much you appreciate her for other things and how glad you are that you have such a wonderful daughter. Something like, “And even though I hope you can wait until marriage because it will be the best thing for you, I understand it doesn’t always work out that way–and who am I to judge because of what I did…” Or something. I don’t know. The thing is you don’t want to make it obvious that you know but you don’t need her playing silly games with you either by feeling that she has to lie to you just to make you happy with her.

I mean who wants a fake relationship, right? And besides, you would want her to feel you had an open enough understanding that she could come to you if she ever got pregnant or stuff right?

Well that’s about it from me and my great advice.
