I quite using marijuana like 2 years ago and i remember that when i quit i still had a little left over and my brother wanted it so i gave the little that i had left over to him instead of throwing it away. Would this be a mortal sin? Thanks

It is not a mortal sin.

Even if it is a grave matter; which it is not; you did not have the required knowlege for it to constitute a mortal sin.

All mortal sins must have;

Gravity (defined by the ten commandments) AND
Knowlege AND
Consent

Well when I did give it to him I knew it was wrong and that using marijuana goes against the churches teaching. I just didn’t want to make him mad. The reason why I quit was because I believed it was a mortal sin yet I still went and gave some that I had left over to my brother.

How old was your brother at the time? How old were you?

When you say ‘make him mad’, what do you mean? What exactly did you think he would do if you refused?

All these things have a bearing.

Simple answer to your question!!!

Go to Confession!!!
True enough. Regardless of whether it was a mortal sin or not, it would put your mind at ease, and you can get advice from the priest about whether it was grave matter or not. I suspect the fact that you thought it was means it would’ve been a serious sin if you’d done it with full consent (however you might’ve NOT fully consented depending on the circumstances.)

Okay i was planning on going to confession either tomorrow or Sunday right before mass so ill address it there.

Also what i meant by “I didn’t want to make him mad.” I just didn’t want to be hassled or have my brother feel like I let him down by not giving it to him rather than just throwing it away.

But I realize now that while i didn’t let down my brother I let down God by not standing up for what I believe in.

Just go to confession and confess it you will feel better and you will know it is now gone forever and you are good, you don;t need to be a theology major who can nail down what is and isn’t mortal sin you just need to go to confession when anything like this is bothering you.

I agree with the rest. Don’t worry about whether it was mortal or venial. If it is troubling you, confess it.
But I realize now that while i didn’t let down my brother I let down God by not standing up for what I believe in.
At that point, you were just exiting form that lifestyle, and you still valued it enough to have bad feelings about throwing it away. You needed to get rid of it, because of the temptation it offered you. Sometimes people get high when around others who are high. Maybe at that point, you thought that was OK. Now you know different.

Don’t let guilt give you scrupulosity. Confessing it will help you find the middle path.

Of course it is…to turn on an innocent person is wrong. The weed is age old and harms brain cells among many other parts of the body.Glamorized by the bedbug singing group…bugs or beatles I forget…how many …got high from their friends …went for a drive and killed someone while driving under the influence. Yes sharing drugs is always wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself.

That would make letting someone else (of legal age to drink - and I accept that there’s no legal age attached to marijuana) have an alcoholic drink sinful as well on that basis, since how many people have accepted a drink and then went for a drive and killed themselves or others while under the influence?

The point is, there are many substances that used inappropriately can have bad consequences. We don’t consider alcohol intrinsically evil whereas we do consider drugs like marijuana evil and yet the incidence of drink related injuries and deaths is (as far as I know) substantially higher (at least in the UK) than injuries and deaths related to smoking pot.

I’m not excusing the use of an illegal substance: I’m just pointing out that objectively there’s very little difference in practical real life between alcohol and the use of other relatively low grade hallucinogenic substances.

It would therefore make sense to say that if alcohol used in moderation is not sinful then that rule can be applied elsewhere. It’s simply not theologically sound to state, in isolation to other things, that all use of marijuana is instantly sinful, since we have to exercise moderation in what it is we do and that it’s doing things to harmful excesses where sinfulness begins to apply.

Your response sounds like an apology for using illegal drugs. Taking an illegal drug that makes one hallucinate is not the same as taking a swig of alcohol. I just cannot believe I am reading this type of justification on a forum for supposedly faithful Catholics. Drugs are harmful and if you understood all the evil things that happen to bring illegal drugs, including marijuana, to the user then you might not be so flip about the subject. Also let’s not forget that marijuana is often a gateway drug (meaning it leads to harder to harder drugs).

Yes it is a sin and yes you should go to confession but not because it will make you feel better. You should go to confession to repair your relationship with God who is offended by sin.

I am certainly not apologising for using illegal drugs (on a personal level I detest all drugs even to the point of barely being able to tolerate anything alcoholic). I am simply pointing out the philosophical argument why it’s not possible to be absolutist about it.

Yes, marijuana can be a ‘gateway drug’ - but that’s not because of its own effects - rather that because it’s illegal, the only way to obtain it is from persons likely to be also willing to sell, and therefore expose the purchaser to, harder more insidious and addictive drugs. If alcohol became illegal overnight, criminals would, inevitably, start distributing it and it too would become a ‘gateway drug’.

Drugs are harmful, yes.

So is alcohol. But alcohol is legal and can be obtained in a way which doesn’t expose the user to things that aren’t legal.

That’s not being flippant or defending the use of illegal drugs… that’s simply being realistic.

For the record, I don’t want marijuana made legal. But that doesn’t mean that it’s automatically EVIL, which is a very different argument.

Actually a Study done at the University of Pittsburgh says marijuana is not a gateway drug.

Also marijuana does not make you hallucinate nor is it classified as a hallucinogen.

Again let me say I accept Church teaching that it is very sinful to use marijuana but please lets not start getting all 1936 reefer mad up in here making wild claims about marijuana.

…smoking pot…now there it is…for centuries the ruling classes had their turn ons…hashish, opium, this hemis…cocaine etc…and so they called it Dope! The moron of the 7 drawfs was called ‘dopey’ he drooled a lot and was stupid. during ww2 our rulers changed the meaning of dope to mean…information…as to “hey, hear the latest dope,we are moving out tomorrow” one can witness this on ww2 flicks.after that war to save commuism was over dope was again used to mean mind changing drugs…then the GIBill revealed a new class and there for the ruling class had to change its name again to make this evil substance more appealing…they tried …joint (no good,we all have joint problems) they tried weed (no good weeds you pull out) they tried grass (I used to make signs, keep off the grass and leave them on dorm.lawns,so that was killed) what to do.what to do…I discovered it the first day I had cafeteria duty at school…the ladies (mom) were here with the food, farthest away were the seniors they had cut the cord…to the left and right sides sat the juniors and sophs…and who was next to mom and the…you guessed it…the frosh…frightened, cant wait to go home…when they open the door they smell that aroma from the kitchen…from the pot…yes thats it! and so this ancient evil substance was finally named…POT…turn em on early and we own em! I used to distribute a book called: Marijuana time for a closer look…by Dr.Curtis Janeczek…with a comic book and a film strip…everything he warned about has come true…a delightful blend of essays, cartoons, common sense, and documented medical facts…they have so little respect for us (our rulers) they have a campaign against smoking but on the other hand push for medical use of this junk…now now…remember today they declare 2+2=5…we must obey its all for our own good…they really care…heil…

^ Thats probably one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.

On a more serious note i have a question about the general confession I made when I quit using marijuana. Well when I went to my general confession I confessed that I had used Marijuana _ amount of times and I was sorry for having done so. The thing is I didnt throw away the marijuana i had remaining i just left it in my bedroom. Now since i didnt get rid of the marijuana would that invalidate that confession? Since that confession i have not used marijuana and plan on never doing it again I just never threw it out.

Also I did end up throwing it away but it did sit in my bedroom for quit a while…

I don’t think it would be a mortal sin or not but it is definitely a sin in my opinion. If a person were to give marijuana away to someone, they would not only be consenting to the other person’s sin, they would also be condoning their sin as well.

It does sound to me like you were confessing but in a sort of ‘reserved’ way - i.e. you were keeping your options open.

For the confession to have been full and complete, I think that you should have disposed of or destroyed the substances in question immediately before or immediately after your confession, rather than keeping them hanging around. To have kept them for some time with the knowledge (as far as you were concerned) that they were wrong to use placed you in a deliberate near occasion of sin, which is unwise, to say the least.

You would be wise to raise it with your priest at your next confession (if you haven’t already done so) just to be sure.

At my last confession I told the priest that i used to smoke marijuana and that I quit but i didnt throw it right away putting it in a cabinet in my bedroom for a while. I also told him that during this time I did not use it and since I was not using it my brother asked me if he could have it and I gave some of it to him. I told him I was truly sorry for having gave it to my brother and I should have thrown it away when I quit. The priest didn’t say anything to me about holding on to it… I got absolution soi guess Im going to put this behind me now and strive to be a better person than I was before.
