Come on you folks - don’t you know the liturgy is supposed to reflect the culture?! What do you want? A solemn, authentic, orthodox presentation of the Mass? How dare you expect that! If only you would learn to think for yourselves and get out of the mindless, medieval Roman mindset. No doubt this was done with the best of intentions. So don’t complain.

OK which of the above phrases will Frommi quote back to us?
I haven’s seen Frommi even reply to this thread, and I personally think that your post is inapproriate.

Is it? Read Frommi’s posts. He’ll get to this one.

The post itself is certainly sarcastic - just the reaction this sort of manhandling of the Mass deserves.

I just can’t resist a good laugh. I have been reading the post back and forth between you and Frommi so I can’t help but find this a bit on the humorous side. Of course, no offense meant to anyone.

Please address issues rather than fellow posters or the thread will have to be closed.

hello,

I lived in Las Vegas for over 5 years before moving back to germany. Granted, my dh is military, so we went to that chapel., But it sounds to me like you actually encountered one of the Catholic Communities, rather than the Roman Catholic churches. Our pastor always warned us about them. There are lots of them in Vegas, I’m sorry you got lost in one of them. I found my faith again in Vegas ( weird, huh? Sin City and all, but the Lord works in mysterious ways…) and had nothing but pleasant experiences. I really don’t think the church you went to was representative of the Clark County diocese! Their bishop is an awesome man! God bless!

Sort of hard to tell without the name of the “community”

By googling: catholic community las vegas
I turned up one catholic parish which appears to be part of the LV Diocese. So who knows. What’s terrible - is that it’s not clear that the subject of this thread is a non-Catholic Community. What’s even worse is that so many folks have no trouble at all believing it is a Catholic Church.

Next time try the Cathedral, which is just off the Strip. The building leaves much to be desired but you’ll get at least what passes for a normal Mass. The Viatorians operate the Cathedral parish.
Code:
And given the doubts expressed about this "Community," you will at least know the Cathedral is in communion with the Church.

You should ask her to PM (Private Message) you that information as I believe that posting it here would be in violation of the forum rules that our moderator has posted in an earlier post on this thread.
I believe wjp984 was COMMENDING the church near the Mandalay Bay, not complaining about it, so there is nothing wrong with identifying it.

As for missing Mass: what I have been told is that you are not obligated to attend Mass when away from your home Diocese and Parish.
I’ve never heard this before and I’d be very surprised if it’s true. What about the people who are away from home nearly every weekend because of their job? e.g. seamen. I understand that we are required to make all reasonable effort to attend Mass every Sunday no matter where we are.

Boy, does Pope Benedict have his work cut out for him. I think it’s going to take a relocation on his part for at least 12 months to clean up the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into in many parts of this country.

Wouldn’t it be great if he, Arinze, Bruskewitz, and Chaput manned the Popemobile and did a coast to coast cleaning?

I was there!!!

A year ago at a seminar… walked to the nearest Catholic church… the waterfall… “theater in the round”… etc. Just as you described… no kneelers…

Other seminar attendees went to other Catholic churches and said that the others were very traditional / orthodox.

Because of the heat and the sun angles, I had pretty well used up my energy walking there. (Was able to hitch a ride back to the hotel.)

I wanted to walk out, but I was on foot and didn’t have a car and there was no place else for me to go… and regardless of my discomfort… the Offertory, Consecration and Communion were done correctly.

I was so shocked, though, that when I got back, I wrote a LONG post on liturgical deviations here at CA.

The state of the Church today and so much of the craziness…is part of our cross in this generation. Better to pick up your cross and endure it at the time…and don’t go there again. 🙂

It’s been going on for 2 generations. It’s time to keep it from spreading to another generation. IMHO

Agreed with the previous post. I at times one in particular which celebrated our priest’s 50th anniversary as a servant of our Lord, a “good ole Protestant hymn” was sung after Communion. I walked out dissapointed, and at loss about the state of affairs in our parish community.

During my tenure in high school, I was on our parish’s youth leadership team. We as a team would put on a retreat every summer for other youth in our parish and around the areas. When going through the process of trying to figure out what to say to these young men and women, I often at times was silenced about talking about topics that were strictly Catholic. The reason “you need more personal testimony”, and that I didnt need to be so doctirnal. It is indeed a sad day that when talking about Catholic topics we are often silenced and questioned by members of our own faith.

May the Lord give us strength to endure these calamities of our time!!

I was thinking the other day, what freedom some people have who just leave the Church, or join schismatic movements, or worse. Myself, I wouldn’t want that freedom, because it would come at such a great cost, that of leaving the Divinely appointed authorities of the Church.

Like St. Francis of Assisi said, “If men were more perfect, they wouldn’t need so much compassion.”

I live in Las Vegas and I went to the Diocese website and think I found the church you attended. I would like to say that not all of the parishes here are “nutty” We have some wonderful traditional parishes here. Mine is a little more modern looking but the Priests don’t deviate into things like liturgical dancing  I would not have stayed either! I am still going through RCIA (Next year for me!) so I am still very green in my knowledge of all things Catholic, but the warning flags would have certainly gone up if I had witnessed what you did. One last thing- my parish is also a Catholic “Community” but again the Mass is traditional. There are some even more traditional here. You can e-mail me privately and I will give you the names of the ones I have been to.
