I am wanting to be a nun someday but I haven’t even officially converted to Catholicism yet. I am attracted to the contemplative life. I have felt called to be involved in the religious life since a few years back when I felt the call to be a missionary. Now I feel more called to the contemplative life. I just want to worship God and be more and more dedicated to Him all the time.

If you have an R.C.I.A. program near you, I would urge you to apply for the fall classes.

I don’t know if I WANT to be a nun…but I think my soul yearns to spend a life of prayer with Him. I have been looking at different Orders and am in contact with a couple. I FINALLY talked to my school chaplain about it (he was THRILLED!!!) and so I’m very happy. I know my life will be for Him, and I think it’ll be as a Bride of Christ. I also feel called to the contemplative life (probably the cloister!) and its so exciting…

Well, I’d recommend talking to someone…like a priest or a religious. It helps sooooo much and its great to know that other people feel like I do! I try to get to Mass more often, which is hard coz I’m at school 8am-3:30pm each day…I love going to Adoration and saying the Rosary!!! And starting tomorrow, I’m planning on going to Reconciliation more regularly as well!!!

I totally understand about just wanting to worship Him…today I just to run as fast as I could to the Monastery and live totally and utterly for Him!!! But that comes and goes, just earlier in the week I was thinking I should try Uni first…! Ah well…God’ll lead me where He wants me to be!

God be with you…Prayers for you!!!

Holly:

Definitely contact a parish near you about the RCIA program. The early stage of the program are an inquiry phase. It will be a great way of learning about the Catholic faith.

As for becomming a nun, you will have to wait a few years after you are brought into the Church before that is even possible. That does not mean, you cannot make inquiries about different orders in you area. You may be able to join an order’s Third Order which consists of lay people that associate themselves with that order. In any case, after you are confirmed, get a Spritual Director to help you in your discernment process.

There are many contemplative orders. The most famous being this Discalced Carmelites (OCD) and the Poor Clares. A couple of good sources for information on religious orders are:
rosmini.org/order/ (Web sites arranged by Order)
religiousministries.com/index.asp (Searchable by state and type of group)
I hope this information helps.

I did that about two months ago! 😉

Thanks everyone for the advice. 😃

Pray, pray, pray.🙂
Learn all you can about the Catholic Faith and spend as much time before the Blessed Sacrament.

Also, their are so many different branches of religious life. Some are cloistered and some are “in the world”. Which one best suits you.

Oh, and did I mention…pray, pray, pray.:blessyou:

Thanks. 🙂 I think that the contemplative life would be best for me. Possibly cloistered but right now I am looking more towards semi-cloistered.

That is so awesome! I wish you all the best. I wonder if you should speak to a nun about this to get some advice.

A nun once told me to pray the rosary everyday to help me find the answer I am seeking for and of course what I am seeking for must be true to my heart.

God Bless!

Dear Holly,

I was so thrilled to read your desire to be a nun. I want to also be either a nun or sister.

Your story sounds remarkably similar to mine!

I just joined the Catholic Church on Easter 2005. I was a Protestant and had also considered missionary work in the past.

Now I know that I want to enter religious life, and I am leaning toward a combination of contemplative/active, but I have not fully decided yet. Recently I have felt God asking me to reconsider all options so I am leaving it all in His hands.

Here is a lovely community in which I am very interested:

Many wonderful, orthodox Catholic communities can be found at these three websites below. They all wear the habit.

Thank you! I took the vocational test on the one website and scored over 650. I think I scored 659. 500+ is considered to be Very High Potential. 😃

I wish I could offer some advice, but I don’t have any to offer. I’m still trying to figure out whether God intends me to become a nun or whether He wants me to be married. There are definitely moments when I think of how wonderful it would be to be able to pray to Him so often without the distractions of family. I’m in college right now, and my prayer life is much harder when I’m at home, because invariably as soon as I’ll start to pray everyone will want to talk to me about something. At other times, though, I feel like I have such a hard time focusing on the prayer I do now that I don’t know how I would be able to join a contemplative order. It’s wonderful that you’re already looking into it.
May God bless your discernment process.

While you seem to be a bit more contemplative, you or some other young woman might also try

http://www.acjusa.org/conventfiles.htm

Sister Joy Payton is a convert, and is living out her vocation in, of all places, Miami. She is (or was) a coder (computer software programmer). Her politics are a little to the left of mine, but she is very sincere, very determined, and I have to say, well, the child’s cute. Would elfin, pixyish, fairy-like be better? Don’t know. She is full of life, and loves the Lord. She’s with the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart, BTW.

Before I forget, there was also a nice order of OPs (Dominicans) in full habit on Father Mitch Pacwa’s show Wednesday evening. I think they were from Michigan. EWTN should have a list of who was on the program June 22nd.

You should think about the Discalced Carmelites! There is a traditional order in Nebraska, they are all over the country, and they don’t mess around. If you want to be prayerful, they are the order.

So true.

Here are two links to the Discalced Carmelites in St. Louis:

I’m an aspirant in the Secular Order in St. Louis. We meet monthly in this very monestary and pray regularily for vocations.

Best of luck to you!

Dave.
