Priests, if they go the route of Diocesan Secular Priesthood, need to know not only the spiritual side but how to manage a staff, how to obey the secular law in dealing with employees. They are also running a small to medium sized business and need to know how to do that!

True, and the priests who go from a business background into parish life bring very valuable expertise, there is no doubt about it. Still, there is no reason that gaining an education at the knee of St. Teresa of Avila isn’t fully compatible with learning how to read a spreadsheet. That’s all I mean. The OP is not too young to develop the prayer life of an adult. A mature prayer life is essential to discernment of his vocation and charism.

Actually, it is also a good idea for any young man who wants to be a priest to embark upon fluency in a second language likely to be useful in the field in which he sees himself going. Like a prayer life, it is the best if this is something gained from steady application from early on. Like financial acumen and a sound prayer life, this is also not something that will “go to waste” if he doesn’t find he has a vocation to the priesthood after all.

LuketheCatholic,

You have gotten a lot of good advice here.

My thought is to share with you that I recommend you have a great prayerful relationship with Our Blessed Mother Mary. She truly is our spiritual Mother, given to us by Jesus as she was standing at the Cross.
