I am a returning Catholic who has been attending Mass now for almost 10 years. I have not attempted to receive the sacraments as I thought that my leaving the church at age 18 and marrying outside of the church would prevent me from returning. My spouse is deceased. Was I excommunicated? A recent event at the church I am attending said that to return to the church you only needed to go to confession. Is this true? Are there any sins that cannot be forgiven? Do I just go or does it require a special appointment.

Hi,

Although you were not allowed to receive the sacraments so long as you were married outside the Catholic Church, you were not excommunicated. It is true that all you need do is go to Confession. You can make an appointment if you wish. But you may also just go to Confession on a Saturday afternoon.

You are in our prayers. Welcome home!
