I myself have just recently read the book of Tobit. What a wonderful, beautiful story. How sad that Protestants are missing out on this lovely romance. I love how the young woman is described as courageous, beautiful and sensible.

Motivations are definitely debatable here, but keep in mind that even the jews didn’t fully get rid of the stories. the stories survived as oral tradition and non official writting.

Not only that, they still celebrate the festivals that are recorded in our collection but not theirs! Hannukah is from the books of Maccabees, and is recorded both there and in the New Testament with Jesus and the Apostles. You won’t find a reference to it any Modern Jewish collection of Scripture, though it is present in oral tradition. Our Scriptural collection actually gives a better accounting of modern Jewish belief and practice than the purely “Jewish” collection

And to this day, there are Jews that still use the entire Septaguint as their Bible (in particular the Jews of North Africa, especially in Ethiopia). So it was Luther’s attempt to justify his decision to remove books that bothered him to refer to this “council” as the reason why he removed any books.

No sir, my theory is not lacking. I understand which versions of the Bible were printed with which books. The fact remains that the Protestant version of the Bible is based on the official Jewish canon, regardless of when it was officially “adopted.” On the other hand, the Catholic Bible is based on the Septuagint, which is NOT official Jewish canon.

The “additional” books found in the Septuagint were dropped from official Jewish Scripture around 90-100 A.D. That is historical fact. If the Catholic Church wishes to continue to view these books as canon, even though Judaism does NOT, that’s fine. Nobody says they can’t, and that’s not my decision. Many Protestants have decided to go with the offical Jewish canon because (as I stated before) Christianity has its roots in Judaism.

Please, feel free to look it up. The people on this thread made it seem like it was the Protestants who arbitrarily took the books out, when in fact it was done by the Jews centuries ago.

Funny story

Several years ago, our deacon had a prayer/Bible study group to which we belonged. Some of the people in the group were Protestant and used their own Bible. One night the lesson was from the book of Wisdom. One lady kept leafing through her Bible looking for the book and finally exclaimed, “There’s no Wisdom in this book!” To which a Catholic member repiled, “You’re right!” We all had a good laugh, and later, we gave her a Catholic Bible so she could get some Wisdom.

Awwwwww, c’mon. No one is laughing at the bible. We hold the bible in highest regard, our priests kiss the scriptures during mass every day, and our Church has safeguarded it for the last 2 millenia.

Laughing at human behavior is really what’s going on here. Gotta have a sense of humor to get through life, I think. :yup:
