I was dead and look—I am alive for ever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and of Hades.

The New Jerusalem Bible. (1985). (Re 1:18). New York: Doubleday.
Do we contemplate death and the afterlife too little?

What will happen to us immediately after death and in the eternity to follow?

I was dead and look—I am alive. Rev 1:18 (NJB)

What will happen to us in the moments after death? Will we not perhaps meet the Lord Jesus Christ soon after death and find out whether we will be vessels of wrath or of mercy (for eternity)?

In the “Haily Mary” prayer, we pray: Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Let us indeed fear God and prepare well for the hour of our death and of what will follow. Let us also pray for friends and neighbors and those we love. As in the Divine Mercy Chaplet, let us love the whole world and and pray for the whole world…”For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”
