I was so happy because I had made a good confession yesterday, I didn’t sin before i made it it church, and I was felling pertty good. I have had a cold for the past few days and was coughing a little, and my aunt was a little under the weather also. While we were going to mass, she said “Do you want a cough drop”, me not thinking said “Sure”, I didn’t even realize until I was almost at the church that I had broke the 1 hour fast before reciving communion. That Sucked so bad, becuase I try SO hard, but i still can’t make the Catholic Church happy. I recieved anyway, becuase I felt like i could, since it kinda slipped my mind, was that the right thing to do, if it wasn’t, is it now a mortal sin (Hey what isn’t these days).

Medicine does not break the Eucharistic Fast.

Correct - water and medicine does not break the required 1-hour fast. Also, technically, the 1-hour fast is prior to receiving Communion, not before Mass itself… thus, since most Sunday Masses are pretty long, you usually have until about a half-hour before Mass. (I think that ruling is kind of lame, I think it should be 1-hour before Mass itself, but it is what the Church teaches!)

See ewtn.com/library/ANSWERS/PREPPEN.HTM
for a better answer regarding the Eucharistic fast.

br. rich,

medicine does not constitute a problem but what about stuff like vitamin tablets?
i have to take them to prevent oral ulcers but don’t take them if it’s less than one hour to mass coz i feel that it’s not essential for my health and i can very well take them after mass.

also, in this case that romanryan presents, he says he felt he did something wrong in taking the cough drops but still recieved communion
this is not to create more doubts in ryan’s head but to clear a doubt of mine
the bible says that he who thinks something is a sin, for him it is a sin
is a person right in recieving communion if he/she has done something which they think might be a sin but are not sure? also, how much of this is scrupulosity?
thanks in advance for the reply

Puleeze! Vitamins and cough drops? The point is that we’re not supposed to eat – as in food, a meal, consuming. Find something better to spend your energy feeling guilty about – like feeling so proud about your good confession.

If you felt guilty about sucking on a cough drop, then how did you rationalize receiving communion? It sounds as though you’re pretending to be scrupulous to find fault with the Church. You said you can’t make the Catholic Church happy. I’d spend more time taking a closer look at that attitude than in expressing insincere guilt (since you received communion anyway) about a cough drop.

dear tricia,
i pointed out the example of vitamins to show that there are some medicines which are not necessary at that moment (like my vitamins and unlike the cough drops) and thus, can be avoided before communion in the spirit of the rule (which, if i’m not mistaken, is to accord respect to the eucharist by not mixing it with common food)
also, if you noticed i myself have asked the question about how much of such an attitude is scrupulosity
what i find distressing is your attitude
if there was a person with a well-established psychiatric syndrome like panic attack or anxiety disorder, i don’t think you would be telling them- Puleeze! Get over your “irrational fears”
then what stops you from being charitable in your outlook, or at least your comments about people suffering from scrupulosity?
i imagine they don’t relish the state they are in. they need understanding as much as the sufferers of any psychiatric syndrome because there are similarities
also, i don’t imagine you can rightfully judge, or even have the right to, who is scrupulous, who is not and who is pretending to be. and that too without knowing the person
