I was told that Peter was not a Pope

I was told by the Church of Christ that Peter was never in Rome so therefore he is not a Pope. How do I prove to them that he was the First Pope.

Please help me out on this one. Iwas told the Paul was the one that went to Rome and not Peter…

Whether Peter was in Rome or not isn’t relevant to whether he was Pope, because Peter became Pope at the exact moment in time of Matthew 16:18, which is long before he ever was in Rome.

This is discussed, I believe, in Fr. Raymond Brown’s book Priest and Bishop.

I understand but when I am feeling attacked because I am Catholic truly upsets me. The Church of Christ are trying to convert me to be with them…And they think they are the true Church that Christ Built… It is truly exhausting to me because they will not leave me along. of course my husband does not help, because he attends that Church. He likes them because they are so nice and make him feel like a family. Very small Country Church with about 20people or so…

Try explaining that the term “Pope” is simply just a word for Father [Abba, Papa, Daddy, Padre, Pop … Pope] …

Peter was a “Father” of the Church …a head of the church, the Prime Minister if you will … read in Isaiah, h Prime Minister holds the “Keys” for the King … The Prime Minister acts with the kings authority … and the people know the Prime Minister and call him “Abba” … father

Ask them where their church was before the time of Alexander and Thomas Campbell and Barton Stone.

Perhaps the onus should be on them to prove their legitimacy. The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ on Peter at Mathew 16:16. Since then there has been an apostolic line of succession from St. Peter to Pope Benedict 16.

I’m very confused, because I know of the UCC, but there are others that also use “Church of Christ” as well. Which group are you writing about? The UCC seems to be just an amalgamation of various Mainline Protestant bodies that joined together in the late 1950s.

The group I am talking about is not United Church of Christ. They go by just Church of Christ. It is a small country Church here in Elizabeth Arkansas…
 
Can someone tell me why did the Universal Church get separated the way it did. It is like going to a Buffet now adays with all the different denominations out here.

And everyone says that they are the way. They swear that the King James Version is the only Bible. Of course except for JW’s and Mormans. I think they have their own. Not sure because I have never gone to those churches:shrug:
 
Wow. That’s a remarkably big question in so little words. I’d love to see some concise answers too.

Why have so many left the Church? Perhaps for the same reason Eve disobeyed God’s command not to eat from the tree of knowledge. Martin Luther took up issue with abuses going on (sellling of indulgences) and dogmatic challenges (Real Presence, salvation by faith alone, etc). He is the father of Protestantism along with other dissidents like John Calvary, Henry VIII, Joseph Smith (the Morman founder) etc.

God gave us free will so each person has an opportunity to find Jesus in His Church.
 
OK, I’m a Catholic, but I’ll admit I’m not too regular with going to Mass…
But I got a friend - he’s not Catholic - and he’s one of those that says Peter wasn’t the first Pope…

he showed me a website, and it has some info on it that is really contrary to what I’ve heard. I mean, I’ve always been told that Jesus said that He would build his church on Peter.

This is a nonsense. The Bible says to obey our prelates(Hebrew 13:17), to obey the Church etc. So who cares about what some protestant on a website says on petros-petra-kepha?
Don’t worry about it.

You know, you really do not have to put up with that. You have every right to tell them that you are Catholic, you will remain Catholic, and you will not listen to attacks on your Church. Said very nicely, of course, but firmly.
