I went to confession yesterday and didn't confess one of my sins--what do I do?

Hi all. I’m new here, and also fairly new to the catholic faith (received my sacraments 2 years ago). I went to confession yesterday because I hadn’t been in about a month. I confessed all my sins–or so I thought. The one mortal sin was that I had missed church once since my last confession, and I confessed that sin. But I have received communion since committing that sin 3 weeks ago. I knew I shouldn’t, but I didn’t realize how bad that was, until I was perusing Catholic facts today, that receiving communion w/o confessing mortal sins first is a mortal sin in and of itself. Now I feel terrible for desecrating our Lord and I’m afraid to go to communion now until I can make it to confession (incl. for tonight’s Ash Wed mass). I was told once that when you go to confession, you are absolved of all your sins, including the ones you may forget to confess. Is this true? What do I do?

You have been absolved of the sin if it was genuinely forgotten and are free to receive Holy Communion, however, you should confess it at your next confession, making sure to mention that you had forgotten to confess it last time.

Confessor: what was the mortal sin that you committed?
Penitent: …

Can the confessor ask such question?
Does that mean one have to confess all over again if the confessor asked about it?

MARYBEKAH, we commit a mortal sin when we
knowingly
and willingly
**consent **to something which we believe and know to be a mortal sin.
At the time you went to Communion you didn’t know you should not do so before going to Confession.
You know now, so it the future it would be, but prior to your knowing, it wasn’t for you at that time.

Nothing wrong with asking that question. There are two reasons he might have asked:

a) He misheard, and thought you’d forgotten to confess BOTH the mortal sin AND the receiving of Communion, and was ensuring that you confessed both this time round.

b) perhaps he wanted to make sure that this ‘mortal’ sin really was a mortal sin. And if it turned out to be merely a venial sin he could advise you that in future it was OK to receive Communion even after that particular sin.

Of course you don’t need to confess again if your confessor asked about it, as long as you mentioned all the mortal sins you could recall it doesn’t matter whether it happens through the priest’s prompting or not. In fact priests will often prompt young children or first-time penitents in this way to help confession run a bit smoother.

You didnt omit it purposely, so there is no sin, & Priests absolve us of all our sins when we make a confession also, I wouldnt worry if I were You, priest know that we cant always remember what sins we committed over a months time, unless You write them down & bring a list
