I’m going to try my hardest… I just want concrete proof of the existence of God. I just to be happy with myself again, and I want to be with my best friend in Canada. 😦 I’m tired of seeking Truth – I want to find it. Wow! I’m feeling hopeless… One side wants me to believe, and the other side doesn’t want me to believe. I was a full fledged Atheist, but now I’m just wondering and questioning myself-- is there truly a God, and is religion real? I honestly don’t know anymore. I have people that say religion is just a self-motivated belief, and I have people say that Christianity is the true religion. I want to believe, but I don’t at the same time…

I continue reaching for You who seem not to exist, praying that You will
“find Yourself to me, for I cannot find You;
love Your love in me, and think Your thoughts in me.”
This surely means You remain present to me. You seem absent, non-existent, but how can I pray into space with no response, unless You give me grace to continue seeking while refusing to deceive myself into false belief?

Although I’m now an Atheist, I went to Confession and see if I could find the Truth through a Priest, and he left me wondering, still skeptical…]I’m going to try my hardest…]
If you sincerely want to try your hardest, give the priest a better chance (or maybe go to other parishes and talk to other priests…depends on your situation and convenience).

Think of it this way: If you had to explain why you love the person you love most (or one of the persons you love the most) to a complete stranger, but you only had a short meeting to do so, would you be able to convince him that that person is worth hanging out with and eventually loving? Maybe you’d need more than one shot to do so. Keep on going to talk to the priest. Ask him and this forum for help finding good books for your needs, or maybe finding activities at a parish nearby that match with your values (maybe volunteering or dinner-gatherings…whatever!) and going there and having fun with the people there. Just some ideas…

What does your best friend in Canada think?

To believe in something you can’t see is hard, that I admit. But you did ask for help, and that is a step in the right direction. I also [think] I understand how you feel. But have no fear. God loves you anyone and judge you not so much by how strong your faith is but by what you do. I once got this answer and after a while I did understand it. And how do we know God exist? If one so many people believe so they can’t all be wrong? More evidence is found in scripts, books written by Saints and Church Fathers,Popes and so on. You came here to ask,I answer you,God exists and there is no doubt about that. No lie nor story can stand as strong as the Christian faith for over 4000 years if it would not be true.

I returned to the Holy Faith in August 2010 after about one year of an atheism that was precipitated by a crisis of faith. I do not know the reason behind your atheism but mine was caused by the apparent contradiction between modern scientific theories and Sacred Scripture. Pope Leo 13th’s Providentissimus deus and Pope Pius 12th’s Humani generis address what were my primary concerns. Catholic apologists Robert Sungenis and John Salza, respectively, amongst others, provided me with coherent answers to my questions that are aligned with the traditional teachings of the Church.

I have also recently decided to attend the Traditional Latin Mass as the New Mass and many of the abuses that unfortunately accompany its celebration in many parishes, was not fulfilling my spiritual needs.

These are a couple of things that have helped me in my faith journey. I hope they help you.

Hello my friend how wonderful that you are seeking knowledge and I hope and pray you will get all your answers.

I was once told a story…

If you plant a seed and water and feed it regualrly it will grow and flourish into a strong plant. If you do not regularly water and feed that seed it will wither and die.
The same with faith. We each are given the seed of faith and if we nourish it with prayers and seeking knowledge and having our questions answered it will grow and develop into a strong trust.

We all go through periods of doubt and question things from time to time that is normal.

My suggestion is to seek the answers to specific questions you have.Read passages of the bible that may answer your questions and pray.

Just a simple prayer such as " God I want to know You please help me"

2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

Romans 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

2Corinthians 5:7 We live by faith, not by sight.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

2 Corinthians 4:18
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I can tell you why I have deep faith in God and my ‘evidence’ is He has answered so many prayers.I feel him active in my daily life.I have felt his presence in so many aspects of my life and my great pleasure and joy is knowing this.I love to share my faith and hope to bring it to everyone I come into contact with.

I suggest you write down or ask here individual questions and seek the knowledge for yourself through the bible.
God will guide you if you are open to him.

Bless you on your journey of faith…it is an exciting time.I shall keep you in my prayers

I hope this link will answer some of your questions

Henceforth, you should probably call yourself an agnostic. A true atheist is a believer of a clearly non-theistic cosmology.

It’s not that you don’t believe. It’s not that you reject God. You simply doubt. Furthermore, you’re actively searching and you’re open to Belief.

God exists. The very fact of the intellibility of the universe…that we can understand it that there is reason in it…points to He who is.

“Life is not a simple product of laws and the randomness of matter, but within everything and at the same time above everything, there is a personal will, there is a Spirit who in Jesus has revealed himself as Love.”

–Pope Benedict XVI (Encyclical on Hope)

“We believe in God. This is a fundamental decision on our part. But again the question has to be asked: is this still possible today? Is it reasonable? From the Enlightenment on, science, at least in part, has applied itself to seeking an explanation of the world in which God would be unnecessary. And if this were so, he would also become unnecessary in our lives. But whenever the attempt seemed to be nearing success - inevitably it would become clear: something is missing from the equation! When God is subtracted, something doesn’t add up for man, the world, the whole universe. So we end up with two alternatives. What came first? Creative Reason, the Creator Spirit who makes all things and gives them growth, or Unreason, which, lacking any meaning, yet somehow brings forth a mathematically ordered cosmos, as well as man and his reason. The latter, however, would then be nothing more than a chance result of evolution and thus, in the end, equally meaningless. As Christians, we say: “I believe in God the Father, the Creator of heaven and earth” -I believe in the Creator Spirit. We believe that at the beginning of everything is the eternal Word, with Reason and not Unreason.”

– Pope Benedict XVI (12 Sept 2006 Homily in Regensburg)

“The proclamation of the Lord’s Resurrection lightens up the dark regions of the world in which we live. I am referring particularly to materialism and nihilism, to a vision of the world that is unable to move beyond what is scientifically verifiable, and retreats cheerlessly into a sense of emptiness which is thought to be the definitive destiny of human life.”

"Indeed, one of the questions that most preoccupies men and women is this: what is there after death? To this mystery today’s solemnity allows us to respond that death does not have the last word, because Life will be victorious at the end. This certainty of ours is based not on simple human reasoning, but on a historical fact of faith: Jesus Christ, crucified and buried, is risen with his glorified body. Jesus is risen so that we too, believing in him, may have eternal life. This proclamation is at the heart of the Gospel message. "

"The resurrection, then, is not a theory, but a historical reality revealed by the man Jesus Christ by means of his “Passover”, his “passage”, that has opened a “new way” between heaven and earth (cf. Heb 10:20). It is neither a myth nor a dream, it is not a vision or a utopia, it is not a fairy tale, but it is a singular and unrepeatable event: Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary, who at dusk on Friday was taken down from the Cross and buried, has victoriously left the tomb. In fact, at dawn on the first day after the Sabbath, Peter and John found the tomb empty. Mary Magdalene and the other women encountered the risen Jesus. On the way to Emmaus the two disciples recognized him at the breaking of the bread. The Risen One appeared to the Apostles that evening in the Upper Room and then to many other disciples in Galilee. "

-Pope Benedict XVI Urbi et Orbi message 2009

In Jesus of Nazareth is true life!

What does your best friend in Canada think?
My best friend in Canada is an Atheist, but if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here. She’s helped me a lot, and I just want to be with her. She was baptized as a Catholic, but she converted to Atheism at a young age. I don’t care if we date… I just want to be with her. I love her. She accepted my bisexuality and my true self. -_- If God is real, then I’ll pray for her every day because I want the best for her and I want her to be happy! 🙂 I do want to be with her; she’s exactly like me.

I’m now an agnostic. I used to deny God and all religion, but for some reason, I’m starting to question myself: “Is there truly a God? Does He exist?” Honestly, I just don’t know anymore. Thanks, everyone! I’m failing every class because I don’t even feel like trying anymore. I’m never happy, and there’s only 12 days of the semester left. What should I do? 😦 I have ADHD and other disorders but my mom thinks I’m “lying.” I’m in AP, and it’s also just too easy. When I was home schooled, I could actually give myself a challenge rather than doing easy assignments my teachers give me. Most days, it’s a fight to even get up.

If there is truly a God, then I just committed a mortal sin even though I had Confession. I’m trying not to. I’m going to pray and hope God proves to me his existence. If I could just be in Canada with my best friend, I would be happy. We don’t talk as much as we used to. We used to talk for a good 6-10 hours a day almost every day. I like her more than just a friend, but she’s lesbian. She didn’t judge me for my bisexuality. She’s never judged me whatsoever. She’s just helped me so much… If there’s truly an omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent and omnipresent God, I just hope He puts her in the right direction of life. Even though I like her more than just a friend, we have a brother/sister relationship. She’s like my big sister, and I do look up to her for the things she’s done for me and for others. For some reason, other girls don’t give me this feeling of both a sexual and emotional attraction like she does. 🙂 I don’t like other girls, to be honest. I might be sexually attracted to some, but I don’t truly want to be with them. I only want her for some reason. I’ve talked to other girls, but they don’t give me that sensation like she does. We’re exactly alike also. I love it! I’ve never met a girl that was exactly like me! 😦 We barely talk now.

I would like to say, thanks, everyone! I’m trying. Plus, I want to better myself anyways. Even though I’m confused now, I’m saving myself for marriage.

“He who is not with me is against me.” Matthew 12:30

So ultimately, as far as Christ is concerned, there is no difference between atheism and agnosticism.

If you hope to be saved, believe. If you don’t care about being saved … twiddle your thumbs? 😉

Sorry to sound harsh, but that’s childlike thinking. One can’t really have much of an impact on what they believe.

If you don’t agree… try these out for size:
  • Believe that World War 2 was a hoax and never happened.
  • Believe that a person gets to God through Mohammed.
  • Believe that there’s an invisible portal in the center of the Golden Gate Bridge, and if you play the right melody (which is, of course, unknown), you can transport back through time to 1932.
I seriously don’t think someone can force a belief. Try it for a year. Pick something innocuous that you don’t believe. Something you feel is ludicrous. And meditate on it for 12 months. Try to convince yourself it’s true.

Then get back to me.

I need helpp,
It sounds like you have a lot going on in your life: school issues, your friend in Canada, and God.

This is to you and to Vis Fati: belief is in some respects a matter of simply making a decision to belief. It’s a relationship: you show friendliness, God responds. Ask Him to show Himself to you, but understand that He usually shows Himself in subtle ways, and sometimes you won’t even notice it for a while (ok, you may notice it but I have missed it :o ). So, I need helpp, pray to God, ask Him to show Himself to you, talk with Him about yoir concerns.

Wrt your friend in Canada, you seem to be thinking about her a lot. This is not really a good thing; it is not a good use of your imagination. It creates a habit of retreating into what becomes almost an imaginary relationship: a relationship with a person who becomes more and more a creation of your imagination.

When I start doing that sort of thing, it is usually an indication that there is something missing in my life. It may be that I don’t have anyone who understands something I am going through; it may be that I feel like I can’t relax and let my hair down with anyone; it could be something else.

As to your schooling, it sounds like you are a junior of senior in high school? Can you ask your fuidance counselor if there are other options for you? It sounds like you did well when you were self-directed, but maybe you were focusing too much on subjects that you liked, or maybe there were subjects you couldn’t study at home. My homeschooled highschoolers take some courses at community college; that may be an option for you, or there may be some other way the guidance counselor can help you. But you really do need to focus on your studies at this time, because they are counted when you start thinking about college, or rather, when yiu want them to start thinking about you!

I hope that if the priest was helpful to you that you will be able to keep talking with him. It is really best to get help like this from someone who knows you in person, someone with whom you can have, at least from time to time, face-to-face conversations, which have a depth one cannot really attain online.

Hello ‘I need help’ Please read my entire Reply carefully ]

You are looking for concrete proof of the existence of God. It certainly would be nice and easy, if God showed up on national television once a year to broadcast to the world that He does indeed exist. But He simply chooses not to do that. God usually does not speak to us verbally. If He did, then we would not need faith. We would not have to Believe, because we would just Know that God does really exist.

Many times in life, we are forced to use our intellect, our ability to think and reason, and to come to logical and reasonable conclusions about things that we cannot actually see and touch.

Jurors on a jury sometimes have to determine the innocence or guilt of a person, using deductive reasoning, even when the evidence is weak and circumstantial, ( and there is no videotape of the crime ). They must rely on their logic and reasoning abilities to come to a proper conclusion.

So is there a God? Try putting aside for the moment, the fact that probably 90+ percent of the human population, throughout the course of history, believe that there is a God, a Supreme Being. Put aside the fact that all legitimate religions believe in a God or a Supreme Being.

Now I want you to just use your own intellectual reasoning ability. Any reasonable person should know that Nothing comes from Nothing. In other words, there cannot be Nothing at one moment, and then Something, one second later. So the Big Bang Theory is NOT the Big Bang Fact, and cannot have happened to create the universe, unless there was a Supreme Intelligence behind it and Willing everything to happen that way.

Maybe you have already learned in school, that Matter ( atoms and molecules ), cannot be created nor destroyed. They can only change form, ( like ice into water or steam ).

So try looking up into the sky at night or during the day, and try telling yourself that this vast Universe, with all the Order in the Universe, came about as one big random Accident.

Think about how NASA can send a probe or a satellite, on a five year trip through space to eventually end up circling around the planet Jupiter.

It is simply illogical and unreasonable to conclude that this Ordered Universe, is NOT the Work or the Design of a Supreme Intelligence. And that Supreme Intelligence we call God.

I believe that deep down inside of yourself, you already know that you are not an Atheist, or an Agnostic. The simple fact that God does not physically speak to you every night, is not enough for you to conclude that God does not exist.

Life is really hard for a lot of us. And especially for a lot of teenagers.

You simply must start using your ability to think logically and reasonably.

Nobody can actually give you Concrete proof of the existence of God.

Try asking your best girlfriend in Canada, or anybody else, to give you Concrete proof that God does NOT exist.

In the final analysis, you have to decide to believe that God does exist, or to believe that God does NOT exist. We cannot obtain Concrete proof, of either belief, until the day we die.

Which belief is more logical and reasonable to you?

I’m sure that if your Mom came down with breast cancer, or some other serious illness, that you would be on your knees, asking God to help your Mom.

Sometimes accepting the fact that God does exist, is inconvenient for us, when we don’t want to follow all the rules of Religion, especially when we feel that what we want to do is normal and not really hurting anybody.

But God certainly does come in handy, when all else fails, and when we realize that He is our last resource for any kind of Help.

Please don’t let your questioning of all the religious rules, interfere with or influence your belief in a Loving and Merciful God.

Got already knows that you are a normal, sexual teen male.

Don’t allow satisfying your normal physical needs as a teen male, to keep you away from loving your God. The vast majority of males deal with male issues in much the same way.

You are only 16 with not a lot of girlfriend experience, so having bisexual thoughts and fantasies while you masturbate, is not really that unusual or uncommon, during the teen years. Because you are only 16, and because it is now most likely a habit for you, there is a very good chance that your masturbation does not count as mortal sin, if it is normally an automatic and spontaneous act, rather than a deliberate and planned act with the FULL consent of your Will.

You have not stated whether or not you have done this, but even actually experimenting with bisexual activities with other males, during the teen years, is probably more common than you may think. So I suggest that you do not try to permanently label yourself as bisexual or homosexual, until you are at least 20 or 21 years old. Until that age, you should simply describe yourself as having bisexual feelings or tendencies, which you may outgrow when and if the Right girl comes along.

Just remember that God loves you. I think you want to love Him back. Everything else that you do is secondary.

Hi. I am sorry to hear that you are having difficult times. I would encourage you at this point to look into some Thomistic philosophy. I feel Thomas Aquinas does a very good job. The base of it is existence itself. Meditate on existence, what existing means, what it entails. Consider that you are a being, made of smaller beings (cells) which in turn come down to the smallest beings we know (particles of atoms.) Consider that we depend on certain things to exist – air, water, blood… then consider that for anything to participate in the state of existence, existence itself must first exist. Nothing may precede existence itself, because for something to precede another thing, it must first exist. Only existence does not depend on other beings for its existence.

This does not explain Christ or the Church to you, but I would at least like for all men to solidly understand that there is one eternal being which is timeless and unchanging, that is existence itself. When you have that foundation, you are one step closer towards the Truth.

Are you in college or high school? Listen, you need to get with someone at your school, a counsellor, and get your ADHD recognized through the Americans with Disabilities Act (are you in America or Canada?). I have ADD myself and I used to teach college. Students can get extra time to do tests and complete homework if they have ADD/ADHD, even get note-taking services. If your mother thinks you’re “lying” haven’t you been to therapy? How did you get the ADHD diagnosis? I would think a psychiatrist’s diagnosis would be proof against suspicion. Your faith life, your life in general, will improve once some of your other issues are addressed.

Also, there’s an old saying that “Depression is the only disease that you can get in trouble for having.” I assume that depression is one of the “other things” that your mother thinks you’re “lying” about. That’s very common. You’re not alone.

Faith precedes understanding, is what Saint Augustine use to say. I think what that means is we don’t have to understand something in order to believe in it. Faith is a grace from God, it is not something we can merit. I suggest praying daily for Faith not for proof of God’s existence. If you have Faith, you will need no proof.

Also be wary of the company you keep, if your around people who aren’t trying to live a spiritual life this could be a large part of what is confusing you. Surround yourself with people striving to live a devout life and you will see a difference.
