Actually, Blacks were not forbidden to hold the priesthood during Joseph Smith’s time. And so the question is: why did BY change it?

Also, blacks were always welcomed as members of the lds church but they were forbidden to hold the priesthood. In fact, JS ran has an antislavery presidential candidate.

The fact is that Mormons kept a segregation rule in effect long after it was made illeagle in America and a majority of people were publically against it.

This is not true. Mormons worshipped together from the beginnings of mormonism. There was no segregation at all. Blacks were never denied membership in the lds church and those that belonged to the lds church worshipped with whites.

In fact, one of the problems the lds church faced in Missouri was the fact that mormons were mainly against slavery. Joseph Smith ran as an antislavery canidate for president.

now these statements seem just as cut and dry as the ones from brigham young posted earlier. now today there is some weird argument used by catholics to state these words don’t mean what they say they mean, i’m sure mormons have a similar argument in regards to blacks in the priesthood.

I remember those time quite well. Black members of the lds church were well respected during the priesthood ban and mormons rejoiced when the ban was lifted. I would say that mormons were one of the least racist people in the USA. Now my catholic father and other catholics that I knew were just a little tainted by prejudice but still good people.

Good points. And as I have said, Brigham Young said much and did much but no one could call him a bad human being. He would be quite surprised in the interest that antimormons have in his discourses. And yet, I may add, the discourses are published by the lds church. No secret there.

It is still cut & dry… Anyone who enters Heaven will do so throught the Universal church that Christ started. We are all going to find that out eventually.

It was Brigham Young who taught the inferiority of African Americans. And it is his teachings that set the foundation for denying African Americans the mormon priesthood.

He taught that a person was born to an inferior race because of their status in the pre-existence, that of being less valiant. He also taught that a black person could not become exalted, that the highest a black person could progress to was the servants of the white men who did become gods.

And yes, I am glad mormons have jettisoned this nonsense.

I can’t be the only one who believes that if the LDS president/Prophet jettisoned that nonsensew closer to 1949 then 1979 then there would be two FLDS churches, one for bigamy the other for “nonsense”
