I wonder if non-Catholics realize that without the Catholic Church there would not be a Bible (nm)

Nope! First by the Jews who made an official canon due to Christianity. The Sadducees more than likely viewed some of the books of the 24 OT canon as apocryphal. They only accepted the Pentateuch.

Yeah and you failed to mention Jerome put aside his will and private judgment to submit to the will and authority of the church. Thus,he included them in his Latin version. 👍
I am not sure if they used the term apocrypha, or anything like it. If Jamnia ever took place, it wouldn’t have been the only time they were rejected. While you are right that there was no “council” that took place (realizing that Jews didn’t even really have this practice to begin with), they were never in the Hebrew collections of Scripture.

Yes, he did. Luther put aside his private judgment and included them in his German version. So why the angst over what Luther did and not what Jerome did? I don’t see anyone calling Jerome a heretic.

Aside from this fact, while the church had the authority to include those books into the Vulgate, that doesn’t make them inspired. The canonical books are canonical not because the Church approved them, but because God inspired them. If God did not inspire the deuterocanonical books, then the Church’s decision to include them doesn’t change that.

Dear Splinker:

As a Christian I would like to apologize for the shameful treatment the Jewish people received at the hands of Christians as described in this incident.

It was wrong. There should be no excuses for it.
Thank you. I have a lot of respect for the Church.

Although this grace of mistreatment of forgiveness goes across the board; I hesitate here, because Splinker has not included that the Jews persecuted the Catholic Christians for over 400 years since the resurection of Jesus Christ.

Secondly Splinker needs to confirm that the Catholic Church would never burn the Tora, because these books have long been canonized by the Catholic church. I am interested if Splinker is aware of Jews and Muslims penetrating the Catholic magisterium and misleading the faithful Catholics to their anti’christ teachings, for which the Pope and other Catholic men including not church men sought out these heretical false priests and false bishops and removed them from the populace and their antichrist literature?

There is enough blame to go around as far as persecution is concerned especially from Jews who prostituted with the Roman Empire to persecute Jesus and his Catholic Church for the next four hundred years.
Without addressing your opinions, I’ll just point out that the OP in this thread argued that the Church is the reason “we” have our scriptures today. My response was, in effect, that this is not the case for Jews and their Bible.

As to the balance of your post, I believe it takes a real love of revisionist history, to conclude that the Jews are equally responsible for the treatment they historically received at the hands of christians.

Your point is respectively well recieved; But while we are on the topic of “Truth”. Let us distinguish in our conversations the difference between the Catholic Church and those who claim to be Christians. Do not pass judgement on the Catholic church for what men do who claim to be christian.

To try and combine these two from a historical view, lends to a poor and misleading analysis of history. When we try and paint a picture of history, let us “give to God what belongs to God and give to Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar” (Jesus).

Peace be with you
