I work on Sundays

Hey all,

I’m a high school student, and I work part-time at a local lake. During the school year, the only hours I can really work are from 11 - 4:45 on Sunday.

I always go to mass, either at 8 in the morning or 5 at night, and attend youth group afterward. I try to go to Holy Hour at a local Norbertine Abby whenever I can, and I always can on Sunday.

I’ve never really felt that I was sinning, though, by working on Sunday. It’s the only day I can work (I have cross country or track every weekday after school and meets on Saturdays), and I need the money to pay for car insurance, which my family can’t afford to buy for me.

I’ve never seen it as breaking the commandment “Keep holy the sabbath”. To be perfectly blunt, most of the reason why I need a car in the first place is because I go to so many youth ministry events, some of them a good 45 minute drive away, and for the most part my family isn’t around to drive me. I think that what I do on Sunday is perfectly Holy- I’m supporting my ability to get to stuff! Not to mention I put my heart into Mass and prayer.

I’ve never considered it a sin, but is it? If so, then I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place here.

On 7th day it’s God HIS own day off.That’s way sunday is called a holy day,the day that we must go to church to pray and praise/glorify GOD.St.John Vianney condemned those who work on sunday and I do believe that other saints did the same.Sometimes I must work on sunday either I like it or not due to my job so I swap with my workmate if she/he is willing to work for me on sunday.Fortunately I rarely work on sunday.I work permanent/full-time and if there is another oppertunity to choose another job that my days off are saturday and sunday I’ll quit my current job.St.John Vianney said if by one or another circumstance that you aren’t able to attend sunday mass we must say 5x Our Father and 5x Hail Mary on the same day.God had been offended since He’s known to the world and since then ,we’d been crucifing our Lord and we’re still by our sins.We always think God is Merciful so we keep on sinning by the thought our sins purposedly or not are committed we make an act of contrition so our sins will be forgiven,but God knows the hearts of HIS own creatures so if you think sunday is ok to work,you are wrong,even the priests will say it’s a sin to work on sunday.If they say it’s oke,how deep they will fall,they are suppossed to be God’s shepherds on earth.But if you think it’s ok to work on sunday,you justify your own act,so it’s up to you then.If my comment offends you all that’s a reality.I make sins daily and crucify our Lord all the time and I can’t make an act of contrition while I keep doing the same sins,but I try to live a saintly life.Be a saint while you are still young.

St.John Vianney condemned those who work on sunday and I do believe that other saints did the same.

With all due respect to St.John Vianney and those ‘other saints’, Jesus tells us in Mark 2:27 “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” – at times, Jesus and the Apostles broke the Sabbath WITHOUT sin.

St.John Vianney said if by one or another circumstance that you aren’t able to attend sunday mass we must say 5x Our Father and 5x Hail Mary on the same day. God had been offended since He’s known to the world

We MUST say 5x Our Father and 5x Hail Mary on the same day? That is incorrect and in conflict with official church teaching.

If we miss mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation WITHOUT a valid reason, we have committed a mortal sin and we MUST confess that sin to a priest. Saying 5x Our Father and 5x Hail Mary on the same day does not remove the sin. The priest during confession will decide what our penance will be. It COULD very well be five Our Father’s & five Hail Mary’s or it could be only ONE Hail Mary or it could be 15 decades of the Rosary each day for a month. The penance for offending God by intentionally missing mass is determined by the priest.

Are you saying that emergency room doctors and nurses and police and fireworkers are offending God by working on Sunday? Jesus tells us that we can tend to an animal on the Sabbath without sin. How could it then be sinful to tend to other humans?

And in today’s econoimc climate some folks may be only be able to get jobs which require them to work on a Sunday or they can’t put food on their table.

If they say it’s oke,how deep they will fall,they are suppossed to be God’s shepherds on earth.

Recall that Christ assured His church that whatever they bound on earth would be bound in heaven and whatever they loosened on earth would be loosened in heaven.

For the record, I do not miss Mass, in case that was a worry Mr. Cherubim.

I know it sounds like I may be rationalizing in my explanation for why I work on Sunday, but it’s the truth. It’s the only day during the school year that I can work, and if I don’t work then I can’t drive, and if I can’t drive then I’ll wind up missing a lot more church events. I’ve gone without a car before, and that’s just how it is.

Fact is, my family needs me to work if I am to be expected to be an active participant in my youth ministry, school activities, and athletics. And Sunday is the only day. On Sunday I go to Mass, I go to Holy Hour, I go to youth group, and I make money so that I can continue to do these things. I see it as a perfectly holy use of my time. And I’m glad most of the other people here do too

First of all thanks for your comment
And about St.John Vianney or Cure d’Ars is the Patron of Parish Priest so he knew what he taught/preached concerning working on sundays.Sunday is the time that believers lay down their duties and take rest by having time fully together with family and praise God by attending mass.You don’t stop helping/serving our neighbours/the needy ones on sunday,let say doing good thing,but you stop labouring on sunday.There are 6 days to labour and a day to take rest and it’s on sunday.That’s what I understand about Jesus’ teaching and St.John Vianney understood it very well.It saddened me that you offended St.John Vianney’s teaching.

This is St.John Vianney’s teaching and once again he said if there’s any circumstance that you can’t really attend sunday mass you must say 5x Our Father and 5x Hail Mary.My fellow catholic knows about it.Sir Knight,I’m firmly believing it because St.John Vianney was a holy priest then and is the Patron of Parish Priest now.

What I mentioned earlier,do not labour on sabbath,but Jesus doesn’t say you stop doing good things or helping needy people/animals.

There are always ways to labour more exceptional on sunday.Life has never been easy,God will help you out of it,economically as well.

Saints were called and chosen by God while they still lived on earth,I think while they’re not born yet.We are possible to do the saints had done,but we tend to sin because we are different from saints who abandoned their worldy thing totally and also totally lay down their lives for God and still pray for our redemption.

I recently got my schedule changed so I wouldn’t have to work on Sundays. I realize not all people have this wonderrful option so I feel very blessed. I think a lot of employees have more latitude in this area than they might think because employers are not to discriminate against religion. If Sundays are sacred and meant to be a day of rest, a lot of employers will feel the pressure to accomodate employees to the best of their ability. So just keep that in mind if you are given a schedule to work on Sundays. It doesn’t hurt to ask if that day can be included on your days off.
