I would like to attend a Greek Orthodox Mass and a service at a synagogue

  1. What should I expect in a Greek Orthadox Mass?
  2. Are the Priests addressed as Father
  3. May I partake Holy Communion if the priest allows it? If so, do I genuflect towards it etc?
  4. What should I expect at a synagogue service? (Not sure what they’re called)
  5. Would I stand out if I just observed but partake if there’s anything I understand?
I don’t really know much about different religions, but my friend said he would like to join me if I went to different services and I know there is a Greek Orthadox church and synagogue really close.

Its called Divine Liturgy as Greeks are of the Byzantine Rite. Why not pursue a Byzantine Rite Catholic Church Divine Liturgy instead? Not only is it the same Liturgy, its from a parish that is 100% in Communion with the Pope, therefore you fulfill your Sunday Obligation and can receive the Eucharist in the same Mass, both of which you cannot do in an Orthodox parish

There are only certain conditions that you may receive the Eucharist from the Orthodox Church. One is if the priest allows it. The other is if there is a necessity, and there are no
Catholic parishes in a reasonable distance (1-2 hour drive perhaps?).

Also, you may NOT genuflect. Its a purely Western tradition. When I visit parishes of other Rites I always just follow what the person in front of me does, so as I know that I do not do something that is against their tradition.

But again, why not seek a Byantine Catholic parish? You get the same exact thing but from a Catholic Church. I go to a Ukrainian Catholic parish.
 
I would call the local church and synagogue offices and pose the same questions.

  1. Kind of hard to answer so I’ll let other posters do that. You can expect a lot of standing and singing though (some parishes have choirs that do the singing while others have congregational singing). Some parishes have a lot of their liturgy in a language other than English so if you’re going to a Greek parish, they may have a lot of the liturgy in Greek.
  2. Yes, priests are addressed as Father and deacons are addressed as Father Deacon.
  3. No, only Orthodox are permitted to receive the sacraments at an Orthodox church.

Look for the Maronite Catholic Church. They are one of the Roman Communion groups, and will allow you to take communion. There Liturgy is in Lebonese. They also claim to be the only nonschismatic group in existance, as they develope from the first church established at Antioch. It is a beautiful Liturgy.
